Extracts made with propanediol vs glycerine have been a bit of a theme in the LisaLise lab this year. I have been getting a feel for how the extracts perform in different combinations of ingredients.
Last time we looked at a comparative test of these, surfactants were involved. Today, we’re going to see at how they compare when botanical powders are added.
Color, Viscosity, Scent
There is a difference in both color and viscosity of these 2 extracts made with fresh strawberries. On the left, propanediol and on the right, glycerine. The glycerine is more viscous, pinker, and has a more robust scent of strawberry while the propanediol is quite runny, a titch duller in color and smells ‘more candy-like’.
Adding (the exact same) botanical powder made quite a visible difference. Below, (propanediol on the left and glycerine on the right) it looks like there is some separation while the mixture on the right is homogenous.
The added botanical was rose powder.
Although the propanediol mixture did come together in the end, it took quite a bit more stirring. The picture at the top shows the end result.
Both of these mixtures have retained their fabulous strawberry scent for 7 months and counting (as I write this) and have managed to dominate the powdered rose completely.
I have since used both in a side by side surfactant-free cleanser test and both performed beautifully. The propanediol would be my first choice where a thinner consistency is desired while glycerite is great for more viscosity. Both have been excellent at retaining the fragrance of the infused fresh food.
– Sponsored Content – If I could change one minor thing about myself it would be my smile and by smile I mean, the overall whiteness of my teeth. Now I know that they aren’t by any means terrible but let’s just say that there is plenty of room for improvement but until I pluck up the courage to invest in something as extreme as say veneers, there is always great at home whitening solutions such as SmileTime.
As we are encroaching into 2020, it is only right that you scrutinise your beauty choices and make wise choices; I don’t think I am alone in saying that it is all but expected a product is now vegan and fortunately for us SmileTime is just that! Not to mention it is both E.U and US compliant allowing you to create whiter, brighter teeth at home by up to 15 shades (clinically proven), pain-free. As many of us worry about the standards of our dental hygiene products, it is only fair that I mention for absolute piece of mind that SmileTime is made in the USA; as such they have undergone compliance testing to meet the safety standards in the UK and the EU. They have a Cosmetic Product Safety Report provided by an independent cosmetics compliance testing company verifying that each of their teeth whitening products meets all UK and EU cosmetics regulations.
The great thing about SmileTime is that the range is small but perfectly formed meaning you don’t have to wade through endless pages of products to decide which is best for you. With a core collection of 4 items SmileTime manage to keep your teeth whitening routine simple, stylish and yet offer something for everyone and every budget. Unlike most whitening solutions SmileTime only requires 15 minutes to work its magic, meaning you can have a brighter smile in time for Christmas and all the festive gatherings that comes with this time of the year. SmileTime is also the perfect solution for any bride-to-be as it doesn’t require costly nor lengthy trips to the Dentist – simply apply at home and prepare to dazzle in your wedding photos.
It will most likely go without saying that the SmileTime Teeth Whitening Kit (currently on sale for £35.99) is the biggest seller and one that you may have seen on Instagram. This quick and easy to use kit can also be refilled (on an easy to use subscription service) meaning you can save money in the long run. Essentially the SmileTime Teeth Whitening Kit is your gateway to pearly whites containing 6 full treatments, a reusable mouth tray, a reusable L.E.D light, a results chart and of course instructions. As mentioned it is very straightforward to make the most of; the mouth tray (in which the teeth whitening gel is administered into) provides moulds for both your top and bottom bite, this is combined with the L.E.D light to speed up processing time. In the time it takes to watch half a Friends episode on Netflix you could be well on your way to your brightest smile yet.
Perhaps you are even more time-strapped and need something even more instantaneous? In that case I recommend purchasing SmileTime Charcoal Teeth Whitening Powder (currently on sale for £8.99) – a gentle and 100% natural charcoal powder that buffs off stains from the very application and with a mint flavour so you can enjoy fresher breath for longer! The SmileTime Charcoal Teeth Whitening Powder is available as a stand alone item or as a kit, personally I recommend plumping for the kit as it comes complete with a Bamboo Toothbrush! The SmileTime Bamboo Toothbrush features 100% biodegradable handle and extra soft bristles so even the most sensitive of teeth and gums can benefit from SmileTime products.
Now what about whitening your teeth on-the-go? Don’t worry SmileTime Teeth Whitening Pen (currently on sale for £9.99) is here for travel, work and any other teeth brightening emergency. The handy twist-up pen fits into the smallest of pockets (and bags), is mess and spill free and is beyond easy to use. Simply twist-up, apply the gel to your visible teeth and go. With the festive period just around the corner not only is this a party beauty must-have but a great stocking stuffer too.
The good news is that SmileTime are running a week long Black Friday sale with up to 40% off so you can shop at your own leisure.

Have you tried any of these brands yet? Which makeup gift set is on your list?
For me, it’s body dryness. I suffer with it in summer, too, but when the colder months roll around, it gets 10x worse. I guess taking 2 hour long baths in steaming hot water doesn’t help.
It’s one of the guilty pleasures that helps me unwind at the end of a long day spent running around icy London. But as soon as I get out of the bathtub, my skin shrivels like an old prune. It itches like crazy, too.
I’ve tried all sorts of creams, balms and lotions to soothe and nourish my worse-than-the-Sahara skin over the years. One of my favourites is Bioderma Atoderm Intensive Baume. Here’s why:
P.S. You can use it on your face, too.
What’s In Bioderma Atoderm Intensive Baume?
GLYCERIN
Have you noticed that every skincare product for dry skin has glycerin?
There’s a reason for that. Glycerin is a moisture magnet. Literally. Like a magnet, it attracts moisture from the environment and binds it into the skin.
Your skin then uses the extra moisture for all sorts of things: become softer to the touch, take on a dewy glow, and make fine lines and wrinkles look smaller (an effect of moisture plumping).
Ah, the by-product of crude oil everyone loves to hate on! Hear me out before you dismiss it…
For starters, mineral oil undergoes a strict purifying process that removes all traces of toxins and impurities from it. The end result – Cosmetic Grade Mineral Oil – is safe for use on the skin.
Mineral oil is one of the most moisturising things on this planet. It creates a barrier on the skin that traps in moisture, preventing it from evaporating into thin air.
FYI, this barrier will trap anything it finds on your skin. If you’re using anything comedogenic beforehand, the trapped culprit may give you a breakout. But mineral oil itself isn’t comedogenic.
But why use mineral oils when there are so many natural oils available? It’s the gentlest.
Most oils contain 30+ substances (really!). Just think of all the antioxidants, fatty acids, and fragrant components an oil has. Not to mention, the pollen, resins, and anything else that deposits on the plant while it’s growing up.
Mineral oil is a simple molecule made in a sterilised lab. That means there’s less chance it’ll give sensitive skin a rash or irritation.
Bioderma claims PEA is the hero that makes your skin stop itching. It certainly plays a part. But repairing your skin protective barrier does that too. This cream has plenty of heroes that can do that job.
Like the mineral oil above and the ceramides below.
CERAMIDES
Did you know the word Ceramide comes from the Latin “cera”? It means wax.
That’s just what ceramides are. Waxy substances that make up roughly half of your skin’s protective barrier. They basically waterproof skin so that moisture stays in and germs and bacteria stay out.
Ceramides patch up any holes in your skin’s protective barrier, too. When it’s whole again, your skin is naturally soft and supple, and better able to withstand the assaults from the colder weather, too!
The balm has a thick, creamy consistency that glides smoothly on the skin. It sits on the surface for a couple of minutes before sinking in, but it never feels greasy or oily.
Fragrance
It’s fragrance-free. That’s good. Fragrance is one of the most irritating ingredients in skincare and can make the irritation and itching worse.
How To Use It
A little goes a long way. I apply it all over my body after I get out of the shower (or bath). You can use it on your face as well, if it’s particularly dry or itchy. Mine isn’t, so I use the balm on my body only).
Performance & Personal Opinion
Bioderma Atoderm Intensive Baume is one of the most moisturizing creams I’ve ever tried in my life. I massage it for a couple of minutes to give it the time to fully sink in before I put on my clothes.
Straight after application, my skin feels so much softer and smoother. I’m happy to report, the moisturizing effects last all day, too.
I don’t have to drop whatever I’m doing during the day to slather on another dose because my skin feels super tight (yes that happened – and yes, working from home helps).
You get the point. It’s really as soothing and calming as it says. I find it helps with itching, too.

I’ve had some people ask me how the Panasonic Nanoe Hairdryer prevents frizz while adding water to the hair. I tried to explain it in an Instagram post, but then I realised that I needed more diagrams and space to explain it properly, so here it is! (Note: This post isn’t sponsored, although I have…
Here’s the theory: PER-1 activates the keratinocyte genes. These genes help protect against cellular damage and promote cellular viability, longevity and improve repair of DNA damage.
The catch? They’re turned off at night. By turning on the switch, Tripeptide-32 could make them work when you sleep, too.
In practice, it’s highly unlikely that Tripeptide-32 can reach deep enough into the skin to activate these genes. Why? Your skin has enzymes that break it down before it has the time to reach its destination.
But let’s say that Tripeptide-32 can bypass these enzymes and reach PER-1. The only study that claims it can activate genes comes from Estee Lauder. Not the most unbiased of sources…
What does it do? It’s super hydrating. It works by attracting moisture from the air into the skin, helping to keep it hydrated. It’s so powerful, it can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water!
It doesn’t smell too nice… But I don’t mind that. It means you’re smelling the ingredients. No irritating fragrance was added to the mix. Phew!
But does this work? Cos it’s much easier to put up with it if it does, don’t you agree?
It depends on what you’re looking for. If your skin’s sensitive and prone to irritation, you’ll love this. It’s very soothing, calms down redness and hydrates skin, leaving it softer and smoother all night long.
If you’re into anti-aging, you’ll be disappointed. This serum has a few antioxidants that’ll help you keep wrinkles at bay, but it can’t make wrinkles smaller. A retinol serum would work better for you.
FYI, I didn’t get any breakout or irritation from this. It’s very gentle for all skin types.
Q: I have had the same hairstyle and colour now for years, and would really like a change.
About me: I’m 31 years old, 5’5″, with hazel eyes and an oval-shaped face. My colour is dark blonde (or dirty blonde, as I’ve been told), and I have lots of hair, but it is very fine. I also have annoying cowlicks on both sides of my forehead, so parting my hair is quite challenging at times.
Laura is looking for the best hairstyle and colour to suit her features.
I am a physical education teacher who works in Hong Kong, where the humidity is extremely high. So I need to be able to get my hair off my face (otherwise it ends up stuck to my face with sweat!).
I am really interested to know what I should do with my hair colour and what style you think would suit my face. Thank you so much in advance. — Laura
A: Laura, first of all, you have a beautiful face shape.
You don’t need to chop all your hair off. You suit a little bit shorter hair. Two inches will do it. The length should be at the top of the chest.
Since you have finer hair, you should also have choppy layers starting from the collarbone. But the layers cannot be too blended. If the layers are too blended, they become too wispy and soft. They need to be chunky. It’s a very good technique for fine hair because it makes it look and act thicker.
You also suit a fringe. Like a curtain bang that lands on the cheekbones on both sides. Your cowlicks would actually help the fringe to drop on the cheeks.

This fringe is very current and super cool right now. The rest of your hair can go up in a ponytail or be blow-dried smooth in soft, long layers.
Hailey Baldwin at the 2015 MTV Europe Music Awards.
Jennifer Lopez at the 2004 Golden Globe Awards.
As for your colour, it’s too ashy. It’s actually a little bit greenish-grey on you.
I would leave the pale cool blonde highlights—it’s your base that is wrong. It looks like you have a mousy base colour naturally, but your colourist is putting too much ash into your formula, so you’re turning a little too flat.
It needs to be more of a warm honey blonde, like a Level 8 gold. That will give you warmth. When there’s warmth and gold around your face, it will glow. It will look stunning.

I know it’s really cold in the UK and most of us will be reaching for fragrances that are perhaps a little more spice based but frankly I’m not a fan. My preference is always going to lean towards fruity and altogether more floral scents and not even a threat of snow could make me change my mind. My recent find is Dolce & Gabbana Dolce Garden Eau de Parfum which allows me to pretend that I’m strolling around in the midst of Spring rather than the deepest, darkest days of Winter.
It’s seldom that I don’t fall hard for just about any Dolce & Gabbana fragrance, as a perfume house they seemingly have the magic touch and seamlessly blend floral and gently fruity notes quite like no other. If you are in the market for a modern take on an oriental floral scent then I highly suggest visiting Notino, trying out Dolce & Gabbana Garden Eau de Parfum; light, airy, able to stand out in a crowd and suited to both night and day wear.
I think part of my reason for all but collecting Dolce & Gabbana scents is that they do tend to use fairly quirky notes and this launch is no different. Garden is a delicate blend of unsuspecting bright Tangerine, luxurious Neroli and gentle Magnolia; this is coupled with Frangipani, Coconut, Ylang-Ylang and a creamy base of Almond Milk, Vanilla and Sandalwood.
In my mind it manages to capture all the best parts of the warmer seasons and of course weather too; the first days of Spring and all the bright, blooming flowers paired with milky, almost sun lotion-like notes of almond and coconut. Despite all the unusual additions this manages the impossible and is not overly youthful, in fact it has an air of sophistication that lends its self well to any occasion or environment.
You can find Dolce & Gabbana Dolce Garden Eau de Parfum £37.40 – £61.60 – linkwith the code 20% BLACKGB.
– Sponsored Feature – In an attempt to stop frivolously spending I am actively avoiding beauty sales and shopping with a purpose and only seeking out items that I truly want and/or need. That’s not to say that I don’t appreciate a good bargain because I do but it is time I stepped up and became more fiscally responsible. If this sounds familiar then may I be the one to introduce you to Cosmetify?
In a nutshell Cosmetify is a comparison website that allows you to quickly and easily save money on beauty products, fragrance and much, much more. At a quick glance Cosmetify is your beauty saving portal to no less than 1,710 brands, 216.650 products and 38 retailers, with an average saving of 34%. – that’s a serious chunk of change.
Unlike other sites of this nature Cosmetify is beautifully laid out with sections dedicated to individual brands, trending products and even quick access to items that neatly slot into key phrases such as "cruelty free" and "paraben free". I particularity enjoy this aspect as it allows me to discover new products that I may not have considered and in some instances brands that have slipped under my radar. Another wonderful and much needed feature is that should any of your desired products be out of stock, then you can instantly sign up to be alerted of any potential restocks – great for limited edition items and of course any much coveted gifts.
However you chose to utilise Cosmetify the outcome is that you will always be matched with the cheapest price meaning you save money each and every time. Transparency is key to Cosmetify and as such you will always be informed about each retailers individual delivery options, including time frames and of course cost.
Now it wouldn’t be a full review if I didn’t try out the service for myself so I dusted off my every growing beauty wishlist and ticked off a few items I have been desperate to try out. Rather wonderfully not only was everything I wanted in stock but I had access to slightly trickier to source brands such as Huda Beauty. Essentially Cosmetify redirects you to the cheapest merchant for your desired product so I did have to deal with a few separate parcels arriving but that is hardly a hardship in order to save quite a few pounds.
I can truly say that I will be running any future beauty purchases through Cosmetify in the future; quick, easy and as I’m saving money I don’t nearly feel half as guilty when treating myself to a few new bits and bobs.
You can discover Cosmetify for yourself here – link.
It’s the most wonderful time of the year—when beauty brands mark down their skincare, makeup and haircare products to the lowest prices EVER!
