Q: I have had the same hairstyle and colour now for years, and would really like a change.
About me: I’m 31 years old, 5’5″, with hazel eyes and an oval-shaped face. My colour is dark blonde (or dirty blonde, as I’ve been told), and I have lots of hair, but it is very fine. I also have annoying cowlicks on both sides of my forehead, so parting my hair is quite challenging at times.
Laura is looking for the best hairstyle and colour to suit her features.
I am a physical education teacher who works in Hong Kong, where the humidity is extremely high. So I need to be able to get my hair off my face (otherwise its ends up stuck to my face with sweat!).
I am really interested to know what I should do with my hair colour and what style you think would suit my face. Thank you so much in advance. — Laura
A: Laura, first of all, you have a beautiful face shape.
You don’t need to chop all your hair off. You suit a little bit shorter hair. Two inches will do it. The length should be at the top of the chest.
Since you have finer hair, you should also have choppy layers starting from the collarbone. But the layers cannot be too blended. If the layers are too blended, they become too wispy and soft. They need to be chunky. It’s a very good technique for fine hair because it makes it look and act thicker.
You also suit a fringe. Like a curtain bang that lands on the cheekbones on both sides. Your cowlicks would actually help the fringe to drop on the cheeks.

This fringe is very current and super cool right now. The rest of your hair can go up in a ponytail or be blow-dried smooth in soft, long layers.
Hailey Baldwin at the 2015 MTV Europe Music Awards.
Jennifer Lopez at the 2004 Golden Globe Awards.
As for your colour, it’s too ashy. It’s actually a little bit greenish-grey on you.
I would leave the pale cool blonde highlights—it’s your base that is wrong. It looks like you have a mousy base colour naturally, but your colourist is putting too much ash into your formula, so you’re turning a little too flat.
It needs to be more of a warm honey blonde, like a Level 8 gold. That will give you warmth. When there’s warmth and gold around your face, it will glow. It will look stunning.

What are the best moisturizers for seriously dry skin?
In the hotter summer months, my skin ain’t that picky. Any lightweight lotion will do. But as soon as the chilly winds roll around, my skin shows sign of cracking.
It feels a little tighter in the afternoon. It gets red (and not in that cute blushing way) more easily. It may even get itchy.
Maybe you’re dealing with that on a daily basis. If your skin’s naturally dry, prone to sensitivities, or subject to excess exfoliation, finding a moisturiser that gets the job done feels like looking for that elusive needle in a haystack.
Fret not, here are the best moisturiser for seriously dry skin (no matter the cause):
Best For Anti-Aging: Paula’s Choice Resist Intensive Repair Cream ($33.00)
Paula’s Choice Resist Intensive Repair Cream is loaded with every antioxidant you can think of. These smart molecules patrol your body, looking for free radicals (the nasty buggers that give you wrinkles and dark spots) to destroy. Retinol goes a step further: it also boosts the production of collagen, the protein that keeps skin firm. If you’ve never used it before, be warned: it’s harsh on the skin and can cause dryness and irritation. Luckily, this cream is so rich, its moisturizing mojo will counteract the worst side effects.
P.S. If you’re already using a retinol serum, you do NOT need retinol in your moisturizer, too.
Best For Sensitive Skin: Bioderma Sensibio AR ($24.90)
Got dry skin so sensitive, anything will trigger a rash? Bioderma Sensibio AR got your covered. Its blend of non-fragrant oils deeply moisturises skin, leaving it soft and supple for hours. Plus, it has its fair share of soothing ingredients, like ginkgo and green tea, that calm down redness and irritations. While they’re at it, they also help you fight off free radicals before they give you premature wrinkles. Did I mention it’s fragrance-free, too?
Best For Repairing A Broken Skin’s Barrier: Paula’s Choice Omega+ Complex Moisturiser ($35.00)
You’ll know if your protective skin’s barrier has broken down all over the place, trust me. Your face feels tight and dry all the time. It easily turns redder than a lobster. It itches like crazy and everything seems to irritate it. In the worse case scenario, even putting on moisturizer with the slightest touch is enough to make you cry. What’s a girl supposed to do? Paula’s Choice Omega+ Complex Moisturiser is loaded with ceramides, fatty acids, and natural oils – all substances that naturally make up your skin’s protective barrier. When you put them back into your skin, they patch up any holes in your barrier, making your skin softer and healthier again. Bonus points: it sinks in quickly, too.
Best On A Budget: The Inkey List Turmeric Face Moisturizer ($12.99)
Packed with squalane and coconut oil, The Inkey List Turmeric Face Moisturizer has a super moisturizing, yet lightweight, formula that keeps skin soft, supple, and perfectly hydrated for hours on end. Plus, the combination of turmeric and oats is very soothing for the skin. It helps calm down redness and irritation. That’s pretty much it. It’s a simple formula, but gets the job done well without breaking the bank.
Best For All Skin Types: CeraVe PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion ($15.99)
What if you have normal/oilier skin that gets drier in winter? You can switch to a heavier moisturizer during the colder months. Or you can get your hands on CeraVe PM Facial Moisturising Lotion and use it all year round. What makes it so versatile? Instead than oils, it uses barrier-boosting ingredients like ceramides and niacinamide to protect skin from harsh weather, germs, and anything else that’s trying to harm it. Plus, the lightweight texture sinks quickly in the skin, without leaving a greasy residue behind.

At the annual American Music Awards, the biggest names in music get a chance to make a statement on the red carpet—and this year, it was louder than ever!
Among the beauty looks: a retro bob, red eyeshadow and bleached-out eyebrows….
Keep scrolling for all the hair and makeup you need to see!
Selena Gomez

Unpopular opinion: Selena had my favourite look of the night! I know this hairstyle wasn’t everyone’s taste, but I’ve always love a curled-under retro bob. (Here, I think it really modernizes her almost ’80s-inspired dress.) The soft, neutral makeup works well, although her skin finish could be a tad less matte.
Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift at the 2019 American Music Awards.

I’ve got more of an issue with Taylor’s outfit than her beauty look—what were those boots?! But this could still be better. On the plus side, her skin looks flawless and the matte coral lipstick is gorgeous, even if the lip liner is too obvious. It’s her side-swept textured hairstyle that falls flat, or maybe it just doesn’t work with everything else going on.
Ciara
Ciara at the 2019 American Music Awards.
Close-up of Ciara at the 2019 American Music Awards.
Can we take a moment to appreciate Ciara’s insane bone structure? Those cheekbones! And her skin just glows, needing what looks like very, very little foundation. The swipe of blue liner under each eye is a nod to her outfit, paired with brown smoky shadow and a cool-toned pink lip. Really nice!
Katherine Langford at the 2019 American Music Awards.
Close-up of Katherine Langford at the 2019 American Music Awards.
Katherine did a very editorial look, rocking what her makeup artist described as “red velvet eyes.” The creativity here is amazing! Her eyeshadow doesn’t match her dress exactly (which I like), and it diffuses into a blush, which reminds me of Rihanna at the 2017 Met Gala. The little gold beads along her hairline are the perfect finishing touch.
Dua Lipa
Dua Lipa at the 2019 American Music Awards.
Close-up of Dua Lipa at the 2019 American Music Awards.
At first glance, I thought this was Hailey Bieber! I didn’t recognize Dua as a blonde—here’s how striking she looked with dark hair, so I hope she goes back to that. The high, cheerleader ponytail seems a little dated, but the makeup (or lack thereof) is okay. Maybe her brows were brushed up a little too aggressively.
Constance Wu
Constance Wu at the 2019 American Music Awards.
Close-up of Constance Wu at the 2019 American Music Awards.
Seeing Constance in space buns was totally unexpected, but I’m here for it. This hairstyle gives her a much more playful vibe than usual. And the makeup has a lighter touch than the last time we saw her, at TIFF. I like the soft metallic liner and coral lip gloss, but perhaps her brow pencil could be ashier.
Lizzo
Lizzo at the 2019 American Music Awards.
Close-up of Lizzo at the 2019 American Music Awards.
Lizzo went for a ’60s-inspired look in shades of peach (even though it was her ridiculously tiny purse that stole the show!). It’s all super costumey, but the makeup is actually pretty good. I like how the false lashes are long but soft, framed by a halo of diffused colour and strong brows. However, I’m not a fan of this hairstyle or texture at all.
Close-up of Jameela Jamil at the 2019 American Music Awards.
I’m not mad about it, but Jameela always looks the same at awards shows. Hair down, bangs, cat eyes and a bold lip—it’s only the colours that vary! This time, her eyeliner is super glittery, and the lipstick is a nice juicy berry tone. I guess when you find something that works this well, you don’t stray from it!
Kelly Osbourne

It’s been years since I’ve seen Kelly on a red carpet—not since 2015!—and I have to say, she’s looking really good. Actually, she might be the only celebrity who actually looks better in bright purple hair! I love how she styled it with bangs and a ponytail with a big bow. And it was smart to stick with warmer peach tones in her makeup.
Kesha
Kesha at the 2019 American Music Awards.
Close-up of Kesha at the 2019 American Music Awards.
I had no clue this was Kesha, what with her new black hair that looks like she just stepped out of the shower! It’s certainly a memorable look, although I wish her hair was slicked back (instead of these helmet-like baby bangs). Makeup-wise, I love that she doesn’t hide her freckles, and the exaggerated cat eyes are super fierce.
Jenna Dewan
Jenna Dewan at the 2019 American Music Awards.
Close-up of Jenna Dewan at the 2019 American Music Awards.
We just saw Jenna at the People’s Choice Awards, and this look isn’t that different. Instead of a smooth blowout, her hair is textured and parted down the middle. But she stayed in her comfort zone with a muted red lipstick, metallic eyeshadow and loads of blush. She’s gorgeous, but it’s a little heavy (thanks to the foundation and false lashes) and doesn’t feel the most current.
Close-up of Camila Cabello at the 2019 American Music Awards.
I’m all for an au naturel look, but I can’t help but feel underwhelmed by Camila’s ensemble. The extra-long braid is something new, I’ll give her that, but we’ve seen the same tousled bangs and low-key makeup many times before. She needs to mix it up a little!
Carrie Underwood
Carrie Underwood at the 2019 American Music Awards.
Close-up of Carrie Underwood at the 2019 American Music Awards.
You all know how I feel about Carrie’s beauty aesthetic in general, but compared to her last appearance on this blog—at the 2017 Golden Globes—this is an improvement! Her eyebrows are more natural this time, and the eye makeup is a lot more toned down (although I wouldn’t expect her to give up her beloved lashes). As usual, though, it’s way too heavy overall. Does anyone else think she is doing lip injections now? Compare and contrast!
Halsey
Halsey at the 2019 American Music Awards.
Close-up of Halsey at the 2019 American Music Awards.
After her girly glam look at the Emmys, nobody was expecting this from Halsey! While the rainbow eyeshadow definitely has some artistry to it that I can appreciate, I don’t think anyone really looks good without eyebrows. Maybe it would’ve worked better if her hair was just slicked back, instead of having these extra crimped pieces.
Christina Aguilera
Christina Aguilera at the 2019 American Music Awards.
Close-up of Christina Aguilera at the 2019 American Music Awards.
Remember when Christina did a super natural look at the 2018 Billboard Awards? We need more of that and less of… whatever this is. She actually has beautiful skin, but you don’t notice it with the distraction of the weird outfit, heavy eye makeup and swollen lips.
Billie Eilish
Billie Eilish at the 2019 American Music Awards.
Then we have Billie, who discovered the best way to avoid all this hair and makeup business. The look is Chic Beekeeper!
Who had your favourite (and least favourite) beauty look on this red carpet?
Call me demanding, but if I have to splurge on an expensive makeup remover, I expect it to:
Remove all traces of makeup – including waterproof mascara – in less than a minute
Be gentle, so it won’t irritate or sting my eyes
Make me a cup of tea
Ok, maybe the cup of tea is asking too much. But a good makeup remover must fulfill the first two criteria, right? Clarins Gentle Eye Make-Up Remover… doesn’t. Here’s why:
What’s In Clarins Gentle Eye-Makeup Remover?
POLYSORBATE 20 & POLOXAMER 184
Clarins Gentle Eye-Makeup is a micellar water for your eyes. It uses the same non-ionic, non-foaming surfactants, like Polysorbate 20 and Poloxamer 184.
On the positive side, they’re gentler than traditional cleansers like Sodium Laureth Sulphate, so they don’t sting your eyes as much.
On the negative side, they don’t remove makeup all that well… The less powerful the surfactant, the more elbow grease it takes to get the job done.
Is the trade off worth it? If you have sensitive skin or need to get your makeup off in a pinch, yes.
Texture
This makeup remove feels like water. Looks like water. Acts like water.
Fragrance
It has an old-fashioned floral scent.
How To Use It
Pour a few drops on a cotton pad and gently wipe your eyes with it.
Performance & Personal Opinion
Remember I told you Clarins Gentle Make-Up Remover is basically water in a bottle?
If you’ve ever tried washing a greasy pan with water alone, you know where I’m going with this. It won’t work. Water and oil don’t mix, so the former can’t remove the latter.
Your makeup (especially waterproof mascara) contains oils. Water alone will smear the mascara around. It won’t melt it away.
I need to use a lot of product, cotton pads and elbow grease to remove makeup off my eye area. FYI, don’t think that I’m wearing heavy makeup, either. I usually skip eyeliner and opt for non-waterproof mascara.
But Clarins Gentle Eye Make-Up Remover Lotion can’t do anything against even the gentlest of makeup, like eyeshadow and primer. If they eventually comes off, it’s because of the all the scrubbing you have to do.
The eye makeup remover itself is very gentle. It won’t irritate or sting your eyes – even if accidentally gets inside them. But all that scrubbing? That is a recipe for irritation!
I could forgive this eye makeup remover if it only struggled against waterproof mascara. But it struggles to remove anything! What’s the point of it being so gentle, if it doesn’t do the job anyway?

We all know UV rays harm our skin—but if you think the average sunscreen gives you proper protection, think again.
Although there are two types of ultraviolet radiation that cause sun damage, most SPFs only do a good job of defending against one of them.
That means they still leave you vulnerable to the most prevalent and dangerous form of UV, which is the main culprit behind skin cancers and premature aging.
Shocked? Me too—which is why I reached out to Dr. Sharyn Laughlin to find out more, and what we can do to be protected.
Dr. Laughlin is a board-certified dermatologist, the medical director of Laserderm, and the co-founder of The Sunscreen Company. As you know, I’ve been a fan of their CyberDerm sunscreens for years, and now I’ve fallen in love with their newest sunscreen line, Ava Isa (which just launched at Credo Beauty!).
In this tutorial, you will learn:
The difference between UVA and UVB rays, and what they do to your skin
Why your skin needs UV protection year-round (even indoors!)
What’s wrong with most sunscreens, and how to choose a safer, more effective one
Why Ava Isa offers superior protection in an ultra-light formula you’ll love wearing daily!
What is Ultraviolet Radiation
The electromagnetic spectrum.
Ultraviolet radiation, or UV radiation, is a form of invisible electromagnetic energy that comes from sunlight. It can also be produced by man-made sources such as black lights and tanning beds (although you should definitely steer clear of the latter!). There are three wavelengths of UV radiation:
UVA is long-wave radiation between 320 and 400 nanometers (nm)
UVB is short-wave radiation between 280 and 320 nm
UVC is intensive short-wave radiation between 100 and 280 nm
Fortunately, we don’t need to worry about UVC, since it’s filtered out by the ozone layer and never reaches the earth’s surface—or our skin. But that’s not the case for UVA and UVB, which do affect our skin in different ways. Here’s how.
UVB, the Burning Rays
If you’ve ever had a sunburn, then you know the symptoms of too much UVB exposure.
“UVB rays are the shorter wave rays in the UV spectrum, and initiate early sunburn,” says Dr. Laughlin. “They are Nature’s warning signal to tell people to get out of the sun.”
However, a sunburn isn’t just uncomfortable. It also causes DNA mutations that, when combined with UVA exposure, play a role in skin cancer.
UVA, the Aging Rays
While UVB acts on the epidermis, the uppermost layer of our skin, that’s not the case for UVA. It also penetrates more deeply, to the dermis, where it ultimately causes more damage.
“UVA rays are the longer wave rays that do the most harm,” says Dr. Laughlin. “UVA accounts for 94 percent of the UV light that reaches our skin, and according to studies from the past two decades, is the main driver of skin cancer and photo-aging.”
That’s because UVA suppresses the immune system and interferes with DNA repair, which encourages the formation of wrinkles and pigmentation as well as melanoma and other skin cancers.
Why You Need UV Protection Year-Round
Sunscreen is the only way to protect your skin from UVA and UVB, and believe it or not, it’s just as important in the winter as it is in the summer.
“UVA is ubiquitous and constant all year round and does not vary according to latitude or time of day,” says Dr. Laughlin. “So everyone should wear sunscreen at any time of day, in any season, in any location on the planet.”
In other words, even if you avoid the sun between the so-called peak hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., it only reduces your risk of burning, but has little effect on preventing skin cancer and photo-aging. Staying inside or in your car doesn’t mean you’re safe, either, because we’re exposed to UV through windows and windshields.
So there’s no getting around it—you need to apply sunscreen every day, first thing in the morning, regardless of your intended activity. But not just any sunscreen….
What’s Wrong with Most Sunscreens
The UVA Protection Factor of the leading sunscreens on the market, compared to CyberDerma and Ava Isa from The Sunscreen Company.
Sunscreens are usually labelled “broad-spectrum,” meaning they claim to protect you from both UVA and UVB rays. Unfortunately, most are failing when it comes to UVA.
In the sunscreen industry, there are several on-skin and computer tests that companies use to calculate measurements such as SPF, Critical Wavelength and the UVA-Protection Factor (UVA-PF). According to Dr. Laughlin, a TRULY broad-spectrum sunscreen should be SPF 30 or higher, with a UVA-PF of at least 10 to 20.
The problem is, the FDA and Health Canada don’t require UVA-PF testing—even though it’s the best way to determine how well a sunscreen defends against UVA radiation. Instead, they allow manufacturers to infer the level of UVA protection (and therefore make the claim “broad-spectrum”) based on another, far less accurate test.
As a result, 90 percent of sunscreens on the market only achieve a UVA-PF of 5 to 8, which is way too low. And without high UVA protection, they have little if any chance of preventing the development of skin cancer or premature skin aging, says Dr. Laughlin.
That’s not the only issue with these UVB-biased sunscreens. Recently, the FDA delisted 12 filters (cinoxate, dioxybenzone, ensulizole, homosalate, meradimate, octinoxate, octisalate, octocrylene, padimate O, sulisobenzone, oxybenzone and avobenzone), so now they are NOT Generally Regarded As Safe or Effective (GRASE).
“They are potential hormone disruptors and DNA mutagens and should be avoided,” explains Dr. Laughlin. “The entire group has been shown to enter blood at different rates to attain peak levels, and every one is bioavailable to a fetus and to all of us. They also happen to be among the leading causes of photo-contact allergy and are implicated in marine degradation.”
How to Choose a Safe, Effective Sunscreen
Choose a sunscreen with insoluble filters and high UVA protection.
So how do you go about choosing a sunscreen, when so many of them aren’t doing their jobs properly—and even causing harm? According to Dr. Laughlin, these are the two most important criteria:
Insoluble filters: ”This is our first precept of safety. Filters should not be absorbed into the body.” Insoluble filters are active sunscreen ingredients that have a high molecular weight and will not penetrate the skin, enter blood or tissue, bind to brain receptors, cross the placenta to the fetus, or enter breastmilk.
High UVA protection: For true broad-spectrum protection, the filters must also have high UVA-PF values. “Fortunately, the same filters that meet the first precept also include the best UVA filters.”
Zinc oxide, Tinosorb M, Tinosorb S and Tinosorb A2B are the four active sunscreen ingredients that get Dr. Laughlin’s seal of approval. But currently, none of the Tinosorb filters are approved in the US, and in Canada, Tinosorb M and Tinosorb S are only allowed in low quantities.
“Therefore, for the North American consumer, it comes down to zinc oxide at a concentration of at least 15 percent as the best filter to protect against UVA.” That’s where Ava Isa comes in!
Introducing Ava Isa Sunscreen
Ava Isa Aurora Rose Ultra Matte SPF 45 Sunscreen and Ava Isa Pure Untinted Ultra Matte SPF 45 Sunscreen.
Ava Isa is a new line of sunscreens that Dr. Laughlin and her team developed to meet the needs of young people in particular.
“Melanoma is now the leading cause of cancer deaths of 15- to 30-year-old women in North America, and other forms of skin cancer have doubled on average in North America over the last 60 years,” she explains. After her granddaughter Ava Isabella was born, Ava Isa was created with the goal of “encouraging young people to get in the habit of using a truly protective sunscreen as early on as possible.”
As such, the Ava Isa SPFs not only deliver high UVA and UVB protection, but they’re also so lightweight, they don’t even feel like sunscreen! Here’s why the formula is such a game-changer:
High in zinc oxide:Ava Isa sunscreens are made with 15 percent zinc oxide in combination with a patent-pending, certified organic material called Bio UVA Ultra. The latter “improves the dispersion of zinc oxide and makes it more efficient, says Dr. Laughlin, “so our 15 percent zinc oxide is equivalent to a 25 percent concentration or higher.”
Superior UVA protection: You’re also getting SPF 45 protection, with a high UVA-PF of 14.95. In comparison, nearly all other mineral sunscreens have a UVA-PF of only 10 to 12. That means Ava Isa gives you almost 50 percent more UVA protection than even the leading mineral sunscreen options on the market.
Lightweight and matte: Sunscreens, especially mineral sunscreens, have long had a bad reputation for feeling heavy, occlusive and greasy. That’s not the case with Ava Isa—”you can now have an all-mineral sunscreen with a high concentration of zinc oxide that is incredibly lightweight, ultra-matte and dries down on the skin almost instantaneously.”
Transparent on most skin:Ava Isa is available with and without a tint, and once blended, becomes imperceptible on most skin tones, says Dr. Laughlin. Pure Untinted is the untinted version, while Aurora Rose has a rose-gold tint with subtle iridescence. However, if you have a darker skin tone (V or VI on the Fitzpatrick scale), you may prefer formulas without titanium dioxide, since it can impart a greyish tone. CyberDerm Every Morning Sun Whip SPF 25 is free of titanium dioxide, and in 2020, the formula will be revamped to provide even higher (SPF 30) protection.
Clean and silicone-free: “The beauty industry is really moving away from silicones and other controversial ingredients,” says Dr. Laughlin. “We’ve found ways of formulating mineral sunscreens using alternative emollients that spread quickly and allow us to create aesthetically pleasing, fluid textures.”
Fragrance-free: ”As a dermatologist, I try to promote products that are fragrance-free, whether the fragrances comes from synthetic chemicals or essential oils. Synthetic fragrances can contain a cocktail of chemicals that can be sensitizing. Essential oils, although naturally derived, can also be sensitizing and sometimes photo-toxic. Therefore, all of our products, including Ava Isa, are fragrance-free.”
Suitable for all skin types:Ava Isa sunscreens are ideal for anyone who hates the greasy feel of traditional sunscreens, especially those with oily, combination or acne-prone skin. But you can also wear them even if you’re on the drier side—just use them after a good moisturizing routine.
How to Apply Ava Isa Sunscreen
Swatches of Ava Isa Pure Untinted Ultra Matte SPF 45 Sunscreen and Ava Isa Aurora Rose Ultra Matte SPF 45 Sunscreen.
“Ava Isa will blend to be transparent, but there are some tricks for best application,” says Dr. Laughlin. “You do need to apply it with a little bit of care, but the payoff is that it becomes imperceptible once applied and blended.” Here’s what she recommends:
Cleanse and moisturize: Sunscreen should always be the last step of your skincare routine, before makeup. So use Ava Isa on clean skin, after hydrating with a serum and/or moisturizer.
Shake the tube well: Shaking before each use will ensure the ingredients and pigment are evenly dispersed.
Use a quarter-sized amount: This should be enough for your face, neck, chest and hands (but use more if any other areas will be exposed to the sun). Squeeze the sunscreen onto the back of your hand and warm it up with your fingertips.
Apply in sections: Since this sunscreen is very fast-drying, you need to work quickly in sections. For example, you could apply it to your face, one quadrant at a time, rubbing it into your skin as you go. Blend the edges as you would any colour cosmetic, avoiding your eyebrows and hairline.
Re-apply if necessary: If you’re going to have extensive sun exposure throughout the day, definitely re-apply Ava Isa. But if you’re only getting incidental exposure, like your daily commute, then one application is probably sufficient and more practical.
Conclusion
Now you know the difference between UVA and UVB, and the best way to protect your skin year-round.
The bottom line? “The most important reason to use a sunscreen with high UVA protection is to prevent skin cancer over your lifetime,” says Dr. Laughlin.
“But I find that people are sometimes more motivated by preserving the look of their skin than statistics relating to skin cancer,” she adds. “In my clinic, patients sometimes invest thousands of dollars into improving their skin with laser treatments and injectables. I always tell them their investment goes out the window if they do not preserve it with a high UVA sunscreen. Studies have shown that the daily use of a truly broad-spectrum sunscreen over a lifetime can shave up to 20 years off the look of your skin.”
And keep an eye out for some exciting new products launching in 2020! Ava Isa Sunè-Serum SPF 35 will be a fluid serum sunscreen with antioxidant benefits that filters out UVA, UVB and blue light. Ava Isa Sun Lip Sun Whips will be mineral sunscreen lip balms in brightly coloured tints (as well as untinted). Make sure to follow The Sunscreen Company on Instagram and Facebook for updates!

Kojic Acid is the underdog of skin-lightening treatments. It’s not as famous as azelaic acid, infamous as hydroquinone, or common as Vitamin C. Heck, most people don’t even know it exists!
But it often succeeds at fading dark spots and hyperpigmentation when others have failed. Take that, Vitamin C.
Should you give it a try? Let’s find out:
What Is Kojic Acid?
Kojic acid is a skin-lightener made by bacteria. No kidding. It’s a by-product of the fermentation process of rice that’s used for sake (the Japanese rice wine).
FYI, Japanese’s diet is rich in foods with Kojic Acid, like soy, miso, and strawberries. They believe (rightly so) it has antioxidant properties that help fight free radicals, the nasty molecules that give you wrinkles, dark spots, and other ugly diseases.
What Is Kojic Acid Used For In Skincare?
Kojic Acid is a skin-lightener that can fade away all kinds of hyperpigmentation, including:

How Does It Work?
Kojic Acid is a one tricky pony. It lightens skin in only one way: it inhibits the activity of tyrosinase, the enzyme necessary for melanin production.
Melanin is the pigment that gives your skin its beautiful natural colour. But sometimes, its production goes into overdrive. Blame it on aging and sun damage. They damage your skin so it pumps out too much pigment here and there.
By inhibiting tyrosinase, you regulate the production of melanin, so it stops releasing any excess pigment. Now everything’s back under control, your dark spots slowly go back to their natural lighter colour.
Does Kojic acid soap work?
Kojic Acid works. But I wouldn’t get my fix from a soap. Two reasons:
Effectiveness: Kojic Acid works better when left on the skin. When you rinse off the soap, you wash it down the drain, too.
Irritation: Soaps have a high pH that’s too harsh for skin. It disrupts the skin’s protective barrier, causing dryness and irritation.
Is it worth to irritate skin for mediocre results? Stay away from soaps and get yourself a cream instead.
You need to use Kojic Acid twice a day every day for at least a couple of months to see results. If you expect a big improvement from the first application, boy, you’re gonna be disappointed!
It’s also a good idea to use it in 3 months cycles. What does that mean? Simple. You use Kojic Acid for 3 months, then switch to another skin-lightener (like hydroquinone or Arbutin), for 3 more months. Later, rinse, repeat.
WARNING! Use sunscreen every morning and reapply it throughout the day. UV rays are the biggest cause of sun spots. Skip sunscreen and any dark spots you’ve faded away will come back with a vengeance.
Can You Use Kojic Acid With Retinol, Glycolic Acid, Vitamin C, Niacinamide, Etc?
Yes – as long as your skin can take it.
Retinol, Vitamin C, glycolic acid, and niacinamide all have one thing in common: they help fade away dark spots. Using them with Kojic Acid will help you lighten any discolourations faster.
Question is, how much can you take? If you throw too much at your skin, you risk turning it into a dry, red, flaky mess. It’ll take a while to recover for that.
If you can take everything, here’s a good regimen to follow:
AM
PM
Cleanser
Cleanser
Kojic Acid serum
Kojic Acid serum
Vitamin C serum
Retinol/glycolic acid (alternate nights)
Sunscreen
Moisturiser with niacinamide
If you find this skincare regimen is too harsh for you, remove something. You do NOT have to use everything. You have to use what works for YOU.
Yes, Kojic Acid is harsh. At 1% and higher concentrations, it has “high sensitising potential” and can cause irritations and allergies. But that’s all you have to worry about.
Here are other concerns people have about kojic acid that are unfounded:
Can It Give You Cancer?
According to the CIR, “While some animal data suggested tumor promotion and weak carcinogenicity, kojic acid is slowly absorbed into the circulation from human skin and likely would not reach the threshold at which these effects were seen.”
We’re not rats or mice. Just because something is bad for them, doesn’t mean it’s bad for us. In the low concentrations used in skincare products (anything too high will irritate skin, remember?), Kojic Acid does NOT cause cancer.
Can It Make Your Skin Darker/Cause Ochronosis?
Ochronosis is a bluish discolourations some people with darker skin tones sometimes get when they use hydroquinone (Kojic Acid’s biggest skin-lightening rival).
I couldn’t find any proof that Kojic Acid causes ochronosis, too. Or that it makes your skin darker in any way.
But – and this is an important but – you need to use sunscreen religiously. Sun damage can darken your skin, especially if you’re exfoliating (it makes skin more prone to sun damage, including dark spots).
Can It Make You Breakout Or Give You Acne?
Kojic Acid itself isn’t classified as comedogenic, so it won’t make you breakout.
But if the product you use has comedogenic ingredients, you may still get a breakout or two.
Ever wondered why it’s rare to find a skin-lightening product with Kojic Acid? This stuff is highly unstable and goes bad quickly. It’s a pain to formulate with.
That’s why some brands use Kojic Dipalmitate. It’s a mix of kojic acid and palmitic acid that makes skin softer and smoother. It’s way more stable than Kojic Acid, BUT there’s no proof it can lighten dark spots and discolourations.
Don’t fall for the hype. Stick to the real thing.
Kojic Acid VS Hydroquinone: Which One Is Best?
Hydroquinone is the gold standard for treating hyperpigmentation. It works in two ways: It works by inhibiting the activity of tyrosinase (the enzyme that controls the synthesis of melanin) and by increasing the cytotoxicity of melanocytes (it kills the cells that produce melanin).
Hydroquinone is the best skin-lightener of the two. But you can only use it in 4 months cycles. During the breaks, you can turn to Kojic Acid instead (as long as your skin isn’t too sensitive).
How Does Kojic Acid Compares With Other Skin-Lightening Ingredients?
Finding the right skin-lightening agent seems like a mission impossible. There are a dozen treatments out there, how do you know which one to pick?
I’m not gonna lie, it’s often a matter of trial and error. Even when science proves something works, you never know how well it works for you until you try it.
I couldn’t find any studies comparing Kojic Acid to other skin-lighteners, like Azelaic acid. But given the irritating potential of Kojic Acid, I’d still try gentler skin-lighteners like Arbutin and Azelaic acid first.

Koreans are known for their glowing skin, which is achieved through a unique regimen. It’s a bit more extensive than what you’re probably used to, which can seem daunting at first. But we’re here to break it down for you, helping you understand the steps so you can customize them to fit your needs. It’s all about achieving healthy radiance from within, and while it may take a little longer, the lasting results are worth it in the long run.
Step #1: Cleansers
Korean women typically use two cleansers, starting with an oil-based cleanser like Aromatica Natural Coconut Cleansing Oil to remove oil-based makeup, SPF and other impurities (since water repels oil). This allows for effortless cleansing rather than tugging at your skin to remove that last bit of mascara. Following with a gentle, sulfate-free water-based cleanser like Peach & Lily Power Calm Hydrating Gel Cleanser removes any remaining residue and leaves skin hydrated. The key is to find a non-stripping, low pH formula that won’t strip or dry out your skin.
Step #2: Toners
Korean toners differ from other toners because they’re meant to hydrate, moisturize, and balance your skin’s pH level after cleansing. No alcohol-based products or astringents here! This reflects the Korean beauty heritage, which is steeped in natural ingredients passed down from generation to generation. This tradition continues today with formulations that tend to shun harsh chemicals and draw from the Earth instead. We recommend Be The Skin Botanical Nutrition Power Tonerand the Peach & Lily The Good Acids Pore Toner.
Step #3: Essences
Though formulated with varying viscosities, essences tend to be a bit more fluid and less concentrated than serums. Their main purpose is to moisturize the skin and make the most of the serums that follow. Think of your skin as a sponge: once it’s plumped up with water, everything else absorbs more easily. Try Peach & Lily Wild Dew Treatment Essence and The Pure Lotus Essence with Lotus Leaf.
Step #4: Serums & Ampoules
These products are formulated with active ingredients that target specific needs by skin type, such as fine lines, loss of firmness, hyperpigmentation and dehydration. You can customize your regimen here, adding or removing products as you see fit. You can use them in any order, but generally thicker, more viscous products go on later. Peach & Lily Glass Skin Refining Serum makes skin look poreless, luminous and translucent, Miwali Hyalu Serum Veil binds moisture to skin with hyaluronic acid, and Shangpree Marine Jewel Capsule protects skin from the damaging effects of harmful UV rays and fights the formation of wrinkles.
A moisturizer designed for your skin type creates a barrier that will lock in all the beneficial ingredients you’ve just applied, instead of letting them evaporate out of your skin (try Troxederm Repair Moisture Cream if you have sensitive skin and Mizon All-in-One Snail Repair Cream if anti-aging is your focus).
Sunscreen is huge in Korea, and rightly so. Every morning, finish off your skincare regimen with either a dedicated sunscreen or a BB cream or cushion compact that includes SPF. We recommend Village 11 Factory Daily Mild Sun Cream Pair. This SPF feels completely weightless and airy, leaving zero white cast behind no matter your skin type. Finally, an SPF you can look forward to using bare-faced or under makeup with zero pilling.
The next steps are optional and don’t have to be part of your daily routine, but can be done a few times a week or whenever you need an extra skincare boost.
Step #8: Exfoliators
Use a gentle, non-irritating exfoliator like Be The Skin Non-Stimulus Face Polisher2-3 times per week to promote cell turnover, unclog pores, allow for better product absorption and keep skin looking youthful. Koreans often use gommage peels that allow dead skin to simply roll off with a mix of botanical and fruit extracts.
Step #9: Sheet Masks
Single-use sheet masks are formulated with the same active ingredients as serums, but are more of an “a la carte” version that you can use as necessary. A good arsenal of sheet masks enables you to customize your routine depending on how your skin is feeling. Peach & Lily Original Glow Sheet Mask lives up to its name and makes you look radiant in seconds. Peach & Lily Chubby Cheeks Lift + Plump Sheet Mask plumps fine lines and wrinkles.
Step #10: Sleeping Masks
Skin regeneration goes into overtime while you sleep, and no-rinse sleeping masks like the Peach & Lily Overnight Star Sleep Maskand Eco Your Skin Lavender Bedside Mask make the most of this process. Packed with active ingredients, they feel like creams and stay on your skin all night. Use them 2-3 times per week in lieu of your regular moisturizer to get your beauty sleep (literally).

“This lotion is one of my favorites because it really moisturizes my face especially now that the air is dryer due to the cold weather,” says one reviewer of this velvety cream rich in superhero antioxidant, matcha. “It also has this very smooth texture and it doesn’t feel heavy in any way. Usually, I would just put this lotion on without applying foundation and then go about my day. It gives my skin this very dewy and healthy glow.”
What makes Raw Sauce special is that it is made with 93% maple tree sap, skin-nourishing fructan powder (eco-cert certified), and Asian herbal and fruit extracts to achieve the appearance of more hydrated and dewier skin. Says one reviewer, “if you’re looking for a great toner that pulls double duty as an essence, this is it. It soothes my skin, immediately improving texture, inflammation and redness.”
“I’m in love,” raves a reviewer of peptide and AHA-drenched sheet mask. When opening this mask, it was not dry, and it had lots of product on it. The mask fit perfectly unlike other masks that don’t fit your face … you won’t be disappointed.”
Before/After with the Original Glow Sheet Mask for reduced flakiness, and skin that gets instantly plumped up with hydration.
“I’ve used it consistently for more than a year and every time I get an acne scar this takes care of it,” says a reviewer. Formulated with 80% of the ever-famous snail filtrate, this serum also helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and troubled skin. Packed with other active ingredients like hydrating hyaluronic acid and antioxidant-rich cocoa, this product applies to the skin silky smooth and leaves it feeling revived.
Crystal-clear glass skin is just one bottle away. One reviewer called this anti-aging cocktail a “gamechanger” after having used it for three weeks straight. “I’ve read numerous reviews before purchasing and they were all right. I’ve seen significant improvement in my skin, and it leaves my skin feeling smooth and glowing.”
“I’m on my 3rd or 4th container of this stuff. It takes my makeup off and leaves my skin so so soft,” raves a reviewer of this sherbet formula that turns into a silky oil-fam to dissolve impurities. “I have very sensitive skin and once I find a product I love, I use it for life.
“As a person with eczema, my face is very sensitive and this power toner is a great way to seal in moisture after cleansing,” says one reviewer of this royal-jelly infused toner with all-natural ingredients that balances the skin’s pH levels and hydrates the skin while helping to improve skin’s firmness. “It lasts a long time…!”
If you were stuck on a desert island and could only have one skincare product, this is the one you’d ask for. One swipe delivers the benefits of an essence, toner, and moisturizer and as one reviewer puts it, “I’ve bought it twice now. I travel a lot, so this is a handy all-in-1 for a couple of days away from home … coming home late … or a lazy Sunday.”
This is your antidote to firmer, more youthful-looking skin. “By the first week, people noticed the change and were asking what make-up I was using, when in truth I wasn’t putting on foundation at all because my skin looks great and refreshed,” says one reviewer of this elixir formulated with a generous helping of 90% marine collagen that firm hydrate, and plump the skin.
“The versatility of this moisturizer is wonderful! And I would pay triple the price for it!” says a reviewer of this moisturizer-meets-serum infused with annatto seed and brightening grapefruit, orange and lemon peel oils. “My skin is reactive on a good day, but last year I used this on irritated, sunburnt skin and it soothed my skin! I carry this in my purse wherever I go. The light citrus scent is lovely!”
Puffy eyes, dark circles, and fine lines begone! “This item was actually bought as a gift for my sister. She is prone to dark circles, and baggy eyes, like me. She said …when she uses it makes her feel like royalty. This product is everything it says to be. It rejuvenates, lifts, tightens and brightens her skin. She is love with it,” says a reviewer of this eye-area specific mask is enriched with hyaluronic acid, minerals, vitamins and gold.
