How to Do Ashley Graham’s Skincare Routine

“I’m all about moisture and having glowing skin,” says Ashley Graham. In fact, “I like to look a little greasy,” the 31-year-old model and body positivity advocate revealed in a recent Elle interview.

Her approach to hydration starts from the inside, with a daily vitamin regimen and “a ton of water.” She also relies on her go-to facialist for glow-boosting treatments like oxygen facials and red light therapy.

But when it comes to skincare products, figuring out a routine has been a process of “trial and error.”

“I have a combination skin type,” Ashley told Harper’s Bazaar. “It’s a little bit oily, a little bit dry. I get a little dry around my nose, a little oily [on my forehead]. Sometimes I get dry on my chin, and I would say that my cheeks are combination 100 percent—[it] just kinda depends on what is happening with the weather. If it’s summertime, we’re oily. If it’s the wintertime, we’re dry. So I always am changing my products around.”

Finally, A Sunscreen All The Family Can Use!

ultrasun family spf 30ultrasun family spf 30

Can you use the same sunscreen for all the family?

In theory, yes. In practice, finding a sunscreen that suits every member of the family is trickier than you think.

Traditional UV filters, like Avobenzone, are a no-no for young children. They get easily absorbed by the body and cause all kinds of irritations.

Mineral UV filters, like Zinc Oxide, are super gentle but sooo greasy and hard to spread – good luck trying to slather than on a toddler who won’t stand still…

Enter Ultrasun Family SPF 30. It uses the new generation of chemical UV filters that provide excellent sun protection without the irritation, absorption issues and greasy factor:

Key Ingredients In Ultrasun Family SPF 30

UV Filters To Provide Broad Spectrum Protection

Ultrasun Family SPF 30 uses the new generation of chemical filters – the same ones that make Korean sunscreens so lightweight and a delight to use:

All together, these UV filters keep your skin safe from UV harm without irritating it. They also make the sunscreen water-resistant for up to 40 min.

FYI, these new UV filters are more stable, meaning they last longer under the sun. But that’s not an excuse to skip reapplication. Slather it on every couple of hours at the beach or you’ll still get a sunburn!

P.S. Unfortunately, Tinosorb and Uvinul are still banned in the USA. If you ever visit Europe, stock up!

Antioxidants To Prevent Premature Aging… Or Not?

Ultrasun Family SPF 30 proudly boasts it has antioxidants to up your sun protection.

Let’s be clear: antioxidants are powerless against UV rays. But they can destroy the free radicals UV generate and that, left unchecked, would lead to wrinkles and dark spots.

But, wait! Won’t sunscreen prevent UV rays from generating free radicals in the first place? For the most part, yes. But SPF 30 still lets 3% of UV rays through. Having a few antioxidants on hand to neutralise the little damage they can make would come in handy.

That’s why I layer a Vitamin C serum underneath Ultrasun Family SPF 30. This sunscreen provides excellent broad spectrum protection, but the antioxidants it boasts of? There are so few here, you can’t rely on them to do much for your skin. Bummer.

Let’s Put It To The Test: Personal Use & Opinion

First things first: I have the travel size version of Ultrasun Family SPF 30. It’s my way to sample products before investing in the full size.

And this sunscreen comes in many sizes: 100ml, 150ml, 250ml and 400ml. If you plan to use it on all the family, go with the bigger size. You’ll need it.

The sunscreen has a lightweight texture that spreads on the skin like a dream and sinks in quickly, leaving no residue or white cast behind. It dries down to a dewy finish – nothing too shiny, but I thought I’d mention it in case you prefer a matte look.

Believe it or not, we had a month of summer in London, when the temperatures often hovered around 30ºC on a daily basis. I even got a little tan from just walking around in the city!

On days when I wore Ultrasun Family SPF 30, I didn’t have to worry about getting tanned or sunburned. This sunscreen did a wonderful job at keeping my skin safe from UV harm and all the havoc they cause.

The best part? It didn’t clog my pores, or irritate my skin, or balled up when I layered it over a serum or moisturiser. I’m definitely buying the full size bottle next time.

Available at: £19.00-£46.00 at Escentual, Feel Unique and SpaceNK

Pore Proof Perfecting Clay Mask: Clarify and Soften in One.

A clay mask that doesn’t dry out your skin? Yes! It exists!

We love clay masks because they’re powerful at decongesting pores, pulling out and absorbing excess sebum, and helping minimize the appearance of pores. We don’t love how clay masks can often be drying, leaving skin feeling tight and dry.

That’s why we wanted to develop a clay mask that would do everything for pores without drying out skin! We thought, how perfect would it be to use that time pores are getting a deep clean also to infuse skin with beautiful, nutrient-rich ingredients that help hydrate and nourish skin? Why not maximize that time as much as possible?

When we went to work on our Pore Proof Perfecting Clay Mask, we started with kaolin clay, the most gentle of clays, and bentonite, a potent detoxifier. Then, we added glycerin, a powerful humectant that helps bind moisture to skin, and shea butter, which helps moisturize and soothe skin. We didn’t just stop there, though — we added wild cherry extract, strawberry extract, and licorice root extract to help hydrate and soothe skin.

The result? Our Pore Proof Perfecting Clay Mask won’t dry into a hard shell on your face, and it rinses off so easily with lukewarm water, revealing soft, clear skin.

peach & lily pore proof perfecting clay mask

Pore Proof is super easy to use! After cleansing, apply a thin even layer to damp skin, and leave on for 10-15 minutes. The beautiful dusty rose shade is natural, too, and makes for fun selcas as Pore Proof helps clear pores and hydrate and soften skin. Rinse off with lukewarm water, then follow with your whole routine!

You can always count on MTV’s annual Video Music Awards, also known as the VMAs, to serve up the bold beauty looks—and this year’s event was no exception.

On Monday night, celebs walked the red carpet in everything from rainbow roots and draped bright blush to classic red lips and wet-look hair. But the most eye-catching look of all? It just might be Gigi Hadid’s monochromatic caramel makeup.

I’m loving this understated nude lipstick and matching eyeshadow with a generous dusting of gold shimmer—it proves you don’t always need dark or bright colours to stand out. Her hair is a darker blonde these days, and looks great combed off her face, with soft texture.

Are They Dupes?: Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum VS InstaNatural Vitamin C Serum

a dupe for Mad Hippie Vitamin C Seruma dupe for Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum

What’s the best Vitamin C serum for acne-prone skin?

I usually recommend Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum. It has Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (SAP), a Vitamin C derivative that tackles both wrinkles and acne.

Or I did… until InstaNatural Vitamin C Serum started giving it a run for its money. Like Mad Hippie, it opted for SAP – but the price is even cheaper!

Does that make InstaNatural Vitamin C Serum a dupe for Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum? Let’s find out:

Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate

Did you know Vitamin C comes in many forms? L-Ascorbic Acid (LAA) is the pure form. Studies show it can:

The catch? There are a couple:

  • Irritation: LAA needs a low pH to work. Low pHs irritate sensitive skin, make it sting and turn it red.
  • Spoils quickly: LAA usually goes bad within 3 months! You know when this happens – the serum turns brown.

How can you get all the benefits of LAA sans the side effects? Enter Vitamin C derivatives, like Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (the form used in Mad Hippie and InstaNatural Vitamin C Serums).

SAP converts to L-Ascorbic Acid in the skin. It’s still a little less effective than pure LAA, but way gentler and lasts for months. Phew!

If you have oily, acne-prone skin, you have another reason to switch to SAP: it helps treat acne. Studies show SAP reduces sebum oxidation (a main cause of acne and inflammation) by up to 40%! It’s also more effective than 5% benzoyl peroxide and 0.1% differin.

Related: Is Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate The Best Vitamin C Derivative?

Vitamin E + Ferulic Acid

I’m sure you’ve heard that Vitamin E and Ferulic Acid boost the effectiveness of Vitamin C.

Good news: both Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum and InstaNatural Vitamin C Serum have their fair share of Vitamin E and Ferulic Acid.

Together, Vitamins C + E + Ferulic acid make one other more effective and increase the sun protection your sunscreen gives you. That’s why I recommend you use your Vitamin C in the morning.

P.S. Ferulic acid is an antioxidant on steroids. It fights THREE types of free radicals! (Most antioxidants only destroy one).

Related: Is Ferulic Acid The Most Powerful Antioxidant Of Them All?

What Else Do You Need To Know?

Both Mad Hippie and InstaNatural Vitamin C Serums have their fair share of antioxidants. InstaNatural Vitamin C Serum has the upper hand here. It has a higher concentration of antioxidants, including:

Mad Hippie, on the other hand, wins in the hydration department. This Vitamin C serum is loaded with glycerin and Hyaluronic Acid, two moisture magnets that attract water from the air into the skin.

Hyaluronic Acid is particularly good at this: it binds to the skin up to 1000 times its weight in water! All that extra moisture helps to keep skin soft and supple for hours.

Which Of The Two Should You Go For?

Go for Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum if:

  • You have oily and dehydrated skin that needs the extra moisture
  • You have sensitive skin (Mad Hippie has fewer ingredients, so fewer chances of irritations)

Go for InstaNatural Vitamin C Serum if:

  • You are more concerned with anti-aging and want as many antioxidants in your serum as possible
  • You’re on a strict budget

Is InstaNatural Vitamin C Serum A Dupe For Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum?

I wouldn’t say InstaNatural Vitamin C Serum is an exact dupe for Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum. But it’s a good alternative for acne-prone ladies (and gentlemen) on a budget.

The Cold Brew Eye Recovery Stick: All You Need Is One Swipe.

Our Cold Brew Eye Recovery Stick was supposed to be an impossible thing to create.

We know dark circles and puffy eye areas are a struggle for many of us. We lead busy, tired lives, and we’re willing to bet that many of us don’t get enough sleep. That’s why we were committed to developing an eye stick that would instantly deliver a cooling feeling and help your eye area look de-puffed and tightened—all without any harmful ingredients like PEGs, Ceteth-10s, and so many others. And without menthol and peppermint extract because we did not want any potentially sensitizing ingredients around the delicate eye area.

Our lab told us that would be impossible. If we wanted our eye stick to have the smooth glide we wanted, we’d need to compromise and allow for these ingredients. If we wanted it to deliver that cooling feeling and help the eye area appear less puffy and more tightened, we’d need to include menthol and peppermint extract.
Not ones to be deterred, we set out to create the eye stick of our dreams. We analyzed each iteration that didn’t work, identifying the ingredients, the formula, everything about it that would help us tweak and tweak and tweak again.

Finally, a few years and so many countless iterations later, we had it, an eye stick that glides smoothly over the eye area without tugging and immediately helps cool the eye area and visibly de-puff and tighten it, all without menthol, peppermint extract, PEGs, Ceteth-10, and 1,550 other ingredients. We did the impossible.

peach & lily cold brew eye recovery stick

Of course, Cold Brew isn’t just about what’s not in it—we also packed it full of beautiful plant-based ingredients that do a lot for your delicate eye area. We started with cucumber extract, a gentle, antioxidant-rich extract known to have a soothing effect on skin, then added caffeine to help decrease the look of puffiness and kiwi extract to deliver even more antioxidants, including vitamin C, to help protect skin.

There’s also turmeric extract, which helps decrease UV damage and the appearance of dark spots, as well as niacinamide, a clinically-proven ingredient that helps brighten and even skin.

Is Ginseng The Secret Behind Korean Women’s Younger-Looking Complexions?

I'm From Ginseng Serum reviewI'm From Ginseng Serum review

Move over, snail slime. Ginseng is the IT ingredient of Korean skincare.

Used for centuries in traditional medicine to treat all kinds of ailments, it’s made its way in skincare, where it promises to fight wrinkles, erase dark spots and make you look 10x younger.

Can it deliver? I’ve put I’m From Ginseng Serum to the test to find out. It has one of the highest concentrations of ginseng I’ve come across in a skincare product so far. If this fails, there’s no hope.

Here’s what happened:

Key Ingredients In I’m From Ginseng Serum

Red Ginseng Extract To Fight Premature Aging

Did you know the Koreans call ginseng “the herb of youth?” They believe it helps with anything, from boosting memory to enhancing stamina and keeping wrinkles away.

I’m From Ginseng Serum has a whopping 7.98% red ginseng extract, grown for 6 years in the Geumsan county of South Korea, the ginseng capital of the world. What makes it special?

Ginseng is loaded with antioxidants, including flavonoids and saponins, that tackle anti-aging on several fronts. Studies show it:

  • Boosts skin hydration
  • Softens skin’s texture
  • Helps fade uneven skin tone
  • Helps firm skin and fade away wrinkles

Ginseng’s the real deal. And, there’s enough here to do the job. Exciting, isn’t it?

Related: 4 Things I’ve Learned From Korean Skincare

Antioxidants To Prevent Wrinkles

Ginseng isn’t the only antioxidant in I’m From Ginseng Serum. This stuff is packed with them. Here are the highlights:

Related: 3 Reasons Why You Should Add Licorice Extract To Your Skincare Routine

Hyaluronic Acid To Hydrate Skin

Hyaluronic Acid is a humectant.

Hume… what?! Let’s start this again…

Humectant is a fancy way of calling ingredients that attract moisture from the air into the skin. Hyaluronic Acid is the most famous member of this family – for a reason.

It attracts and binds to the skin up to 1000 times its weight in water. That’s a lot of extra moisture for your skin. Enough to make it plumper, softer and brighter.

Related: The Complete Guide To Humectants In Skincare: What They Are, What They Do & How To Use Them

Let’s Put It To The Test: Personal Use & Opinion

Housed in a sleek glass bottle, I’m From Ginseng Serum is a dark golden amber hue that reminds me of honey – sans the stickiness. If you apply it right, that is.

I recommend using 1/3 of the dropper applicator. Anything more than that and the serum may feel a little tacky on your oilier areas. Less is definitely more here.

I wouldn’t call the texture rich or heavy, but it’s not thin either. It’s somewhere in between, goes on smoothly and sinks in quickly.

I use it at night, after retinol/exfoliation and before my moisturiser. When I wake up in the morning, my skin feels so soft and supple. It definitely boosted its hydration levels up a notch.

FYI, this isn’t a substitute for a Hyaluronic Acid serum. Sure, it has some HA to add extra moisture to your skin, but not enough to single-handedly fix dehydration. The serum’s designed to target premature aging, not dry skin issues.

So, how does it work in the anti-aging department? I’m From Ginseng Serum does a wonderful job at softening and smoothing out your skin’s texture. I get so many compliments since I’ve started using it.

But (there’s always a but, isn’t there?), antioxidants don’t work overnight. They prevent, rather than treat wrinkles, so you’ll see better results with regular use.

One more thing: you’d think I’m From Ginseng Serum smelled like ginseng, right? Nope. The scent’s a strong mix of sweet and earthy notes. Luckily, it fades away fast.

Overnight Star: Apply, Sleep, Glow.

As you may know, we launched three new innovations at Peach & Lily at the beginning of the month … and they sold out within hours. We brought them back in stock over the weekend, so we thought we’d dedicate a little time to help you get to know each product better, starting with our decadent sleeping mask, the Overnight Star Sleeping Mask.

Here are three reasons to love our Overnight Star.

The Luxe Ingredients

We spare no expenses when it comes to any of our products, and our Overnight Star is no exception. It’s full of beautiful ingredients that help hydrate, nourish, and rejuvenate skin as you sleep, and it’s also rich in antioxidants.

Like black ginseng root extract. Black ginseng root is kind of the original superfood, and it doesn’t just have truly potent antioxidative properties that help protect skin from free radical damage — it’s also rich in vitamins and minerals and helps brighten and revitalize skin.

We of course didn’t just stop with one luxe ingredient, though. You’ll also find acai berry extract (another potent antioxidant that helps firm and revive the look of dry, dull skin), squalane (a non-comedogenic oil that helps moisture, soothe, and balance skin), and niacinamide (a clinically-proven ingredient that helps calm inflammation and reduce the appearance of dark spots).

Its Sheer Ease of Use

Overnight Star is so easy to use — and you might be saying that, of course, it’s easy to use — it’s a moisturizer! How complicated can it be to apply a moisturizer! What we mean is that it’s an overnight mask that really does a lot for skin, so you don’t have to worry. When you apply it at night as the last step in your routine, you can go to sleep assured that the mask will do the work of helping revitalize, hydrate, and brighten skin.

peach & lily overnight star sleeping mask

That Texture!

A bouncy jelly balm meets a whipped gel-cream — that’s the best way we can describe this truly unique texture. We obsessed over this texture because we wanted to get it just right, so Overnight Star would sink into skin without leaving a greasy finish or making skin feel weighed down. We also wanted it to feel like your worries were melting away as you applied it.

It took so many iterations, but we think we got it just right.

Have you tried our Overnight Star yet? Let us know what you think in the comments!

The Truth About Aftersun: Do You Really Need One?

aftersun lotionaftersun lotion

Do you need an aftersun lotion?

As a teen, an aftersun was a must in my beach bag. I had no idea what it was or what it did, but I knew I had to slather it on after a long day in the sun.

It’s in the name, ya all. AFTERsun. Why else would they call it like that?

To trick you into buying another moisturizer. Those marketers are smart. They know “aftersun” will catch your eye and make you think you’re doing some long-term damage to your skin if you don’t put that bottle in your cart.

Can you skip it? Yes and no. Here’s the truth about aftersun and what you really need to do after a day of frolicking at the beach:

What Is Aftersun And What Does It Do?

An aftersun is a moisturizing lotion you apply on your skin after prolonged sun exposure. Its job is to soothe skin from the assault of UV rays.

Here’s the deal: all that ultraviolet radiation fries your skin. It dries it out like the Sahara, turns it red like a lobster and makes it flake like a croissant.

You know what I’m talking about. Maybe you weren’t in the sun enough to develop a fully-fledged sunburn, but after a few hours under the scorching heat, your skin is getting worse for wear.

An aftersun comes to the rescue. Loaded with soothing ingredients like allantoin and aloe vera, it moisturises skin, soothe redness and calms down irritations.

That’s the theory. In practice? Most aftersun lotions barely contain a sprinkle of aloe vera & co. The bulk of the formula ain’t that different from your regular body lotions.

Related: 4 Natural Ways To Heal A Sunburn

bioderma photoderm refreshing after sun milkbioderma photoderm refreshing after sun milk

Is There A Difference Between Aftersun And Moisturizer?

Most of the time, no. Take a look at the ingredients in Bioderma Photoderm Refreshing After-Sun Milk, for example:

Aqua/water/eau, Paraffinum Liquidum / Mineral Oil / Huile Minerale, Glycerin, Sorbitan Stearate, Cyclopentasiloxane, Propylene Glycol, Cetearyl Alcohol, Cyclohexasiloxane, Polysorbate 60, Cetyl Alcohol, Caprylyl Glycol, Fragrance (parfum), Allantoin, Mannitol, Xylitol, Sodium Cetearyl Sulfate, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Rhamnose, Ginkgo Biloba Leaf Extract, Sodium Dehydroacetate, Citric Acid, Ectoin, Disodium Phosphate, Dipotassium Phosphate.

It’s basically a standard moisturizer for dry skin.

Mineral oil is an occlusive on steroids. It creates a barrier on the skin that traps moisture in, keeping it soft and hydrated. Problem is, your skin doesn’t have that much moisture left after a day in the sun…

You could argue that’s what the glycerin is for. It’s a humectant that attracts water from the air into the skin, upping its moisture content. But the aftersun would work better if it were higher in humectants and lower in mineral oil.

More humectants would also give the lotion that cooling, refreshing feeling you crave after been roasted alive for a few hours. You won’t find that here (thank you, mineral oil!).

What about allantoin? It has anti-inflammatory properties that calm down redness and irritation. The catch? It’s listed after fragrance, so there’s barely a drop of it here. *sighs*

Don’t get me wrong. If your skin is dry, this can help. It just doesn’t do anything that any body moisturizer doesn’t…

Related: 5 Myths About Mineral Oil You Need To Stop Believing Right Now

It could be worse. Take Eucerin After Sun Creme-Gel For Sensitive Relief:

Aqua, Glycerin, Alcohol Denat., Butylene Glycol, Tapioca Starch, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Glycine, Sodium Citrate, Cyclomethicone, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Octyldodecanol, Dicaprylyl Ether, Citric Acid, Xanthan Gum, Glucosylrutin, Glycyrrhiza Inflata Root Extract, Tocopherol, Isoquercitrin, Dimethiconol, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Ethylhexylglycerin

This aftersun has a huge dollop of glycerin, so it’ll give your skin plenty of moisture with a refreshing feeling to boot.

It also has a lot of alcohol, an ingredient that can cause dryness and irritation. I’m the first to admit you can counteract these side effects with a good moisturiser. But it’s not something I’d want to slather all over skin that’s already dry and traumatised from too much sun exposure…

Glycyrrhiza Inflata Root Extract is a fancy name for liquorice extract. It has soothing properties, but it’s so far down the ingredient list, it won’t do much for you.

Just like body lotions. Some are good, some not so much….

The Exception To The Rule

Some aftersun lotions ARE different from your regular body lotion. Case in point, Holika Holika Aloe 99% Soothing Gel:

Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Nelumbium Speciosum Flower Extract, Centella Asiatica Extract, Bambusa Vulgaris Extract, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Fruit Extract, Zea Mays (Corn) Leaf Extract, Brassica Oleracea Capitata (Cabbage) Leaf Extract, Citrullus Lanatus (Watermelon) Fruit Extract, PEG-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Sodium Polyacrylate, Carbomer, Triethanolamine, Fragrance, Phenoxyethanol.

Unlike a typical body lotion, this aftersun is almost oil-free and chockfull of anti-inflammatory ingredients.

Aloe Vera, centella asiatica and cucumber all have soothing properties that soothe irritated skin and calm down redness and itching. Aloe goes the extra mile. Made up of 99% water, it’s super hydrating and feels refreshing on the skin.

Now that’s what your skin needs after a day under the scorching sun!

P.S. This aftersun lotion has fragrance, which could irritate sensitive skin. But if that doesn’t bother your skin, this is a good lotion for a beach holiday.

What Are The Best Aftersun Lotions?

The Bottom Line

Most aftersun lotions are just glorified moisturizers for dry skin. If you’re after the real deal, look for alcohol-free products low in oils and high in soothing and anti-inflammatory ingredients (a huge dollop of Aloe Vera is usually a good indication the aftersun’s worth your money).
