Do anti-aging creams work?

do antiaging creams workdo antiaging creams work

I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of anti aging creams I’ve tried that really work. Feel the same?

Oh, everything promises to rid you of wrinkles and turn the clock back 10 years. And most of the creams deliver… for like a few hours. Then those pesky wrinkles come back with a vengeance.

You see, not all anti aging creams are created equal. Some have only what it takes to make wrinkles look smaller for a while. Others only prevent them. Only a tiny number of creams out there can really reduce them.

How do you know if the anti aging cream you’re eyeing is up to the job? Let’s take a look at the different types of anti aging creams and what they can REALLY do:

Anti Aging Creams Type 1: The Basic Kind

How it works

This is the most basic formula and is made up of:

That’s it.

Why it works

Hydration really is key to healthy skin. When skin is well hydrated, it looks plumper and fuller, and that makes fine lines and wrinkles look smaller.

The catch

The effect is just temporary. When the added hydration has run its course, the wrinkles are still there, as big as they were before. That’s why you shouldn’t spend more than $15 on them.

Who should use it?

  • Young women ( <25 ) who don’t need to worry about antiaging yet.
  • Anyone who prefers to splurge on an effective anti-aging serum and doesn’t need more goodies (those I’ll mention below) in their moisturizer.

Best Picks

  • CeraVe Am Facial Moisturizing Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 30 ($17.99): available at iHerbUlta and Walmart
  • Nivea Creme ($5.48): available at Walmart

Anti Aging Creams Type 2: The Exfoliating Kind

How it works

They contain AHAs and BHA, exfoliants that can remove the dead cells that accumulate on the surface on the skin.

Why it works

When you remove dead skin cells, you reveal the skin underneath, which is brighter and smoother. This makes wrinkles look less noticeable.

The catch?

Not everyone may tolerate daily exfoliation. If that’s your case, an an exfoliating moisturiser may work best for you.

Who should use it?

  • Anyone who can tolerate daily exfoliation and can’t be bothered to use a separate exfoliant.

Best Picks:

Shop Exfoliating Moisturizers

Anti Aging Creams Type 3: The Preventative Kind

How it works

These anti aging creams are loaded with antioxidants, the good cops that destroy free radicals, the criminals that give you wrinkles and dark spots. The most common in skincare products are vitamins C and E, green tea, and coenzyme q-10.

Why it works

When an oxygen molecule loses an electron, it turns into a free radical. To regain its electron, the free radical attacks another molecule to get it, damaging DNA, cells and proteins in the process. The other molecule, now a free radical, too, attacks another molecule, and so on, creating a chain reaction that leads to wrinkles.

Antioxidants can fight this process in one of two ways:

  • They can break the free radical chain (ex: vitamins C and E)
  • They neutralize the initiating free radicals, slowing down or preventing the chain reaction (ex: superoxide dismutase).

Either way, they stop free radicals BEFORE they can cause wrinkles.

The catch?

Antioxidants help prevent new wrinkles from forming, but can’t reduce those you already have.

Who Should Use It?

  • Anyone in their teens and early twenties who doesn’t have wrinkles yet.
  • Anyone who wants to avoid getting more wrinkles!

Best Picks:

Shop Antioxidant Moisturisers

Anti Aging Creams Type 4: The Real Deal

How it works

The real deal, these anti aging creams contain vitamin A, which can accellerate cellular turnover, boost the production of collagen, and fight free radicals. It’s one of the very few ingredients proven to really reduce wrinkles, not just their appearance.

Why it works

  • When you accelerate cellular turnover, those old and damaged dead cells get off your face, replaced by newer and younger ones. This makes your face look smoother.
  • Collagen keeps skin firm and elastic. The more skin has, the better.
  • Neutralizing free radicals stops the production of wrinkles in its track.

The catch?

There are several forms of vitamin A. Retinol’s the most effective, but also the most irritating. It can cause redness, flaking, and irritation. Use it only every other day at first.

Other forms, like retinyl palmitate, are less irritating, but also less effective. It’ll take longer to see results, but if your skin’s sensitive, the trade off is worth it.

Who should use it?

  • Anyone who is serious about fighting premature aging.

Best Picks:

WARNING

I’m not saying everyone needs a retinol moisturiser. If you’re using a serum with retinol, you DON’T need it in your moisturiser, too. Using two products will retinol will only irritate your skin.

The point I’m making is that vitamin A is the only thing that can really reduce wrinkles. All those “antiaging moisturizers” without retinol aren’t really antiaging. They can moisturise your skin, exfoliate dead cells and make your skin smoother and brighter, but they won’t turn back the clock.

The Bottom Line

Anti aging creams aren’t miracle products that can make you look 10 years younger overnight. The vast majority of them can only make your wrinkles look smaller for a few hours or prevent them in the first place. Look for retinol if you’re after the real deal.

How to Do Alicia Silverstone’s Skincare Routine

“I’m actually terrible about taking care of my skin,” admits Alicia Silverstone.

Although the Clueless star, now 42, is devoted to clean beauty products, “it’s the food that saves me,” she told Into The Gloss.

“Before my diet changed, I used to have massive breakouts. I had cystic acne all over the place, and it was embarrassing. Once we had to re-shoot an entire scene because of my skin. [Now,] I can wear no makeup, and be really, really tired, but if I’ve been eating clean then my skin is glowing, my eyes are white, and I feel great.”

Case in point:

Just like her vegan diet, Alicia follows a vegan skincare routine. “When I’m choosing products, they have to be completely natural, vegan and not use chemical ingredients. Then they also have to smell great and work great.” (Even if she sometimes sleeps in her makeup!)

Going on Summer Holiday? Don’t Forget Your Skincare!

Summer means holidays, vacations, days on the road, and that naturally raises the question of, How do we take our skincare with us? Whether we’re flying somewhere or taking the car or going camping, here are seven products that are travel-friendly and make it easy to care for skin!

travel skincare dr dream banila co

Banila Co, Clean It Zero

This solid oil-based cleanser is great for travel because it’s, well, not a liquid. That means it can go through TSA security without problems and, even better, that it removes the potential for drippy messes from cleansing! If you’re camping, you probably don’t want to be running the risk of an oil cleanser running everywhere, and the Clean It Zero Cleansing Balm is super easy to use—just scoop (using the handy spatula) onto your hands and let the warmth of your face melt the balm into an oil and sweep away all your makeup and oil-based impurities. Make sure to add water to wash everything away before moving on to your second-step, water-based cleanser.

Dr. Rose Line Mild Natured Powder Cleanser

This powder cleanser also clears TSA security readily and reduces the risk of your cleanser exploding or squeezing open in your bag somewhere. Free of preservatives and sulfates, the Rose Line Mild Natured Powder Cleanser both effectively cleanses and helps nourish skin, and it’s super easy to use. Just shake a spoonful’s worth onto your hands and mix with water, lathering it up in your hands before massaging onto damp skin.

Our special tip? This cleanser can also pull double-duty as an exfoliator! If your skin feels in need of some mild exfoliation, use less water with this powder cleanser! With less water, the powder won’t lather into a foam but will retain some of the powdery grit that’s perfect for some super gentle physical exfoliation.

travel skincare the pure lotus peach and lily

Peach & Lily, Lazy Day All-in-One Moisture Pads

Why carry three products when you can carry one? The Peach & Lily Lazy Day All-in-One Moisture Pads are a toner, serum, and moisturizer in one! These pads are made from a soft cotton blend and have been soaked in a blend of super vegetable and fruit extracts, so it’s like applying the healthiest green juice to your face. Because these Lazy Day Pads are pre-soaked, they’re also TSA-friendly and so convenient to apply — after cleansing, take a pad, swipe it all over your face, and pat any excess liquid in.

The Pure Lotus, Lotus Leaf Extract Sleeping Pack

If your skin is in need of a boost, the Lotus Leaf Extract Sleeping Pack goes to work while you sleep. At 70 ml, it’s TSA-friendly, and the twist cap (as opposed to a pump) and sturdy packaging make it travel-friendly with less risk for mess. The sleeping pack has a light texture that sinks into skin, helping deliver deep hydration and relieve tired and stressed skin, so you can wake up glowing, ready for your next day of travel.

travel skincare peach slices aromatica

Aromatica, Rose Absolute Eye Cream

Don’t forget your eye cream! Holidays, while exciting, can also be tiring, and an eye cream can help your eye area look more awake. The Rose Absolute Eye Cream is water-free, formulated with a base of aloe and fortified with Bulgarian rose oil and organic Argan oil to help hydrate the eye area. Niacinamide helps brighten, so this eye cream can help keep those dark circles and shadows away.

Jelly Bounce Lip Balm, Cherry

Lips have no sweat glands or oil glands of their own, so they can be easily prone to drying out, chapping, and, even, peeling. The Peach Slices Jelly Bounce Lip Balm in Cherry is a juicy, delectable way to keep lips hydrated no matter where you go!

Travel Sheet Mask

You really can sheet mask everywhere, and Peach Slices has a sheet mask specially formulated to meet the concerns of tired and/or jet-lagged skin. The natural cotton sheet mask is soaked in a unique blend of bamboo water, centella asiatica extract, ginger root extract, aloe, and ceramides to help hydrate, calm, and recharge skin. Take one or ten with you, and sheet mask while waiting for a flight, chilling in the back seat of a long drive, or lounging by a campfire after a hike.

We hope that helps give you some ideas for travel-friendly skincare! Tell us in the comments below — where are you headed this summer?

Cosrx Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser: Double Cleansing In One Step?

Do you measure the pH of your cleanser?

Since word got out that anything with a high pH is terribly drying and irritating, everyone’s buying pH strips like they’re going out of business and testing every cleanser in their stash.

Wouldn’t it be easier if a cleanser told you straight what its pH is?! Cosrx Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser sort of does. It tells you it’s low, which is more than 99% of cleansers out there tell you anyway.

Put to the pH strip test, its pH turns out to be 5.5. It goes up to 6.5 when you mix it with water. Just right there in the right pH range then.

But does it have what it takes to remove all sorts of impurities from your skin? Let’s find out:

cosrx low ph good morning gel cleanser 02cosrx low ph good morning gel cleanser 02

Key Ingredients In Cosrx Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser

Cocamidopropyl Betaine And Sodium Lauroyl Methyl Isethionate

Don’t let their long, incomprehensible names fool you. Cocamidopropyl Betaine and Sodium Lauroyl Methyl Isethionate are two very gentle cleansing agents.

Scientists call them surfactants. They’re ingredients that help water mix oil and dirt so they can be easily rinsed away down the drain.

The two surfactants in Cosrx Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser are strong enough to remove impurities without stripping the skin bare of the precious natural oils it needs to stay moisturised.

Yet, they’re gentle enough not to dry out or irritate skin – even sensitive skin.

Plant Extracts

I’ll be brief. A quick look at the ingredient list shows that Cosrx Low pH Good Morning Cleanser is loaded with plant extracts and antioxidants.

Don’t pay any attention to them. All these goodies just end up down the drain together with dirt and grime.

When it comes to choosing a cleanser, it’s the surfactants and pH that really matter.

cosrx low ph good morning gel cleanser 01cosrx low ph good morning gel cleanser 01

Let’s Put It To The Test: Personal Use & Opinion

Cosrx Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser has a thick gel texture that foams a little when you mix it with water.

Don’t let the lack of too much lather fool you. This baby takes everything off – yes, waterproof mascara and water-resistant sunscreen included – in less than a minute!

The best part? It doesn’t leave a greasy residue behind. If you’re tired of double cleansing, you can just use this cleanser for morning and night and be done with it. No need for a second cleanse – unless you’re wearing more makeup than a Kardashian…

The cleanser didn’t leave my skin soft and moisturised. It’s a foaming cleanser so it doesn’t have any added oils to do the job.

But it didn’t leave it dry and tight either. It just… cleansed – without disrupting the skin’s protective barrier. In other words, it does what every good cleanser is supposed to do.

The scent isn’t the best. Fragrance-free, the cleanser takes its odour from the tea tree oil. It’s botanical, with a medicinal vibe to it. Sort of like something you’d smell in a hospital. At least it fades away super fast.

Available at: $12.00/£9.50 at Dermstore, Look Fantastic, SokoGlam, Ulta and Yes Style

Does GlowPRO Work? The Truth About At-Home Microneedling Devices

the truth about glowpro and other microneedling devicesthe truth about glowpro and other microneedling devices

Are at home-microneedling devices like GlowPRO worth the splurge?

When it first lunched on the Home Shopping Network in 2016, GlowPRO sold out in less than 13 minutes! Makes you wonder what you’re missing out on, doesn’t it?

Nothing special if you ask me. Just because you can microneedle at home, doesn’t mean you should do it. Here’s why:

P.S. Before we get started, everything in this article applies to ALL at home micro-needling devices. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking yours is different because it has one more shiny button.

What The Heck Is GlowPRO?

GloPRO MicroStimulation Facial Tool is a patented microneedling device you can use at home.

The device features a LED light and 540 stainless steel needs to create tiny holes in the surface of your skin.

The idea behind it is simple: when you injure skin, you stimulate the production of collagen. More collagen = firmer skin + fewer wrinkles.

According to a study funded by the company, using GlowPRO for just one minute three times a week is enough to renew skin and fade away wrinkles.

Sounds too good to be true? Let’s find out if it lives up to the hype:

What The Heck Is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a technique that uses tiny needles to prick skin and trick it into act like it’s been injured.

When your skin is injured, your body increases the production of collagen and elastin (the proteins that keep it firm and elastic) to fix the damage. All this extra collagen:

As microneedling hacks into your body’s own healing mechanism, you can have it done more often than other collagen-boosting treatments like chemical peels and lasers.

When done by a doctor, research shows that microneedling can improve the texture of your skin and the appearance of your wrinkles.

But do at-home microneedling devices like GrowPRO work just as well?

Related: All You Need To Know About Microneedling

Does GlowPRo (And Other At-Home Microneedling Devices) Work?

When it comes to microneedling, size matters.

A 2009 study found that microneedling improved the appearance of acne scars. The catch?

The patients who saw the biggest improvements used 3mm needles. Those who used 1.5mm saw an improvement, too – just not as dramatic.

Compare that to GlowPRO needles. They’re 0.3mm. You know what this means?

It’s unlikely that GlowPRO needles penetrate deep enough into the skin to reach the collagen-producing layers.

That’s not to say the device is completely useless. It’s still microneedling, so it will do something. But you’ll get much better results if you have it done by a doctor.

FYI, some experts believe the results of GlowPRO aren’t due to its collagen boosting properties. Dr. Mathew Avram, director of the Dermatology Laser and Cosmetic Center at Massachusetts General Hospital, told the New York Times:

“When you roll something on your skin that creates little holes, you may get a little bit of swelling, which would give you a bit of plumping and make you think you look better temporarily. There’s a real need for data to justify the excitement.”

P.S. All at-home microneedling devices have the same needle issues. It’s a safety thing. You can’t put deep needles in the hands of everyone who’s willing to pay. If they don’t know what they’re doing, they could seriously harm their skin.

How Do You Use GloPRO?

GlowPRO is super easy to use. Here’s a short step-by-step tutorial:

  1. Plug GlowPRO into an electrical outlet before use (batteries are included in case you don’t have an outlet nearby).
  2. Clean and dry your skin.
  3. Roll GlowPRO across your face between 4 and 10 times using moderate pressure. You can fill the Sterilizing Spritzer bottle (it’s included with the device) with alcohol to clean the needles after each pass.
  4. Apply your grace serum or moisturizer.

P.S. GlowPRO comes with a MicroTip head attachment for the body, too. Just in case you want to take it all the way.

Does GlowPro Has Any Side Effects?

Just because at-home microneedling isn’t as powerful, it doesn’t mean it has no side effects. Here’s what you should be aware of:

  • Infections: If you roll GlowPRO over an infected hair follicle or you share it with other people, there’s a small chance you may develop an infection. Disinfect well after EVERY use.
  • Negative reactions: When you create tiny holes in the skin, you make it easier for serums to penetrate through. In theory, this makes active ingredients (like antioxidants) work better. In practice, retinol, AHAs and other harsh actives become MORE irritating. Plus, NOT all ingredients are meant to penetrate your skin. You don’t want preservatives or other stuff into your skin.

How Much Does GlowPRO Cost?

GlowPRO will set you back $199.00. You can also get the heads separately. When it’s time to replace them, you’ll pay $35.00 for the face head and $45.00 for the body head.

Is GlowPRO Worth The Splurge?

For me, no. I don’t do at-home microneedling and have no intention of starting soon. I prefer to invest my money in dermatological treatments that really work than skimp and get an at-home device that delivers only so-so results.

I’d only recommend GlowPRO to women with money to spare. If you can afford to spend $199.00 to see what the hype is about and only expect to see a small improvement in your skin’s texture, go for it. If it doesn’t work, you can always return it (check the store policy first, just to be sure).

Have you tried GlowPRO or any other at-home microneedling devices? Share your experience in the comments below.

Why REN Glycol Lactic Radiance Renewal Mask Is More Trouble Than It’s Worth It

REN glycol lactic radiance renewal mask reviewREN glycol lactic radiance renewal mask review

REN Glycol Lactic Radiance Renewal Mask smells like summer. The zesty citrusy aroma reminds me of careless days spent at the beach, sipping a refreshing lemonade while gossiping with my friends.

It’s divine. And bad news for skin (anything that smells too good is). Here’s why I’m not a fan:

Key Ingredients In REN Glycol Lactic Radiance Renewal Mask

Lactic Acid To Exfoliate Skin

Don’t be fooled by the name. REN Glycol Lactic Radiance Renewal Mask does NOT contain glycolic acid.

REN begs to differ. It’ll tell you the glycolic acid is in the pineapple extract. But fruit extracts have very low exfoliating powers. You know what that means? This is a lactic acid exfoliant.

Lactic acid is the gentlest member of the Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) family (the same family as glycolic acid). It does doubles duty:

  1. It exfoliates skin: it dissolves the glue that holds skin cells together, so they can slough off and reveal the brighter and smoother skin that was hiding underneath.
  2. It hydrates skin: It works by attracting moisture from the air into the skin.

The catch? Lactic acids works best when left on the skin for hours (especially true if you’re using them to fade away dark spots).

REN recommends you wash off the mask after a measly 10 minutes. If you have sensitive skin that can’t tolerate acids on for long or you just want a subtle glow before a special occasion, this will do.

Everyone else, you’re better off with a leave-on exfoliant. You can check out my fave picks here.

Related: Glycolic VS Lactic Acid: Which One Should You Use?

Berry Oils To Fight Wrinkles

REN Glycol Lactic Radiance Renewal Mask is loaded with berry oils. Cranberry and black current, to be precise. Here’s what they can do for your skin:

Who knew that berries were so good for your skin, too?

Citrusy Oils + Extracts To Brighten Skin

So far, so good. So what’s my problem with REN Glycol Lactic Radiance Renewal Mask?

This stuff is loaded with citrus extracts and oils – some of the most irritating ingredients used in skincare. If you have sensitive skin, this is something you need to avoid.

I could forgive REN for adding one or two… but these many?! This is just a recipe for trouble…

So why are they here? Citrus oils and extracts have brightening properties that can give skin a subtle glow. But they’re kinda weak… Really no point in using them.

Related: 7 Natural Extracts That Can Irritate Your Skin

Let’s Put It To The Test: Personal Use & Opinion

A pale orangey-yellow in colour, REN Glycol Lactic Radiance Renewal Mask is a thick, sticky gel that applies easily on the skin.

It’s surprisingly easy to remove, too. After 10 minutes, just splash water on your face and massage it off and away. Done.

REN warns the mask can tingle– and it does. I rarely experience this with exfoliants, especially one as gentle as lactic acid. I suspect that has some more to do with the irritating extracts here…

But are the results worth it? Once I took off the mask, my skin was softer and a little brighter. It’s nothing major. In 10 minutes, the mask doesn’t have the time to exfoliate much.

If you’ve got dry skin that has lost of its glow or are trying to fade away sun spots, you need to use it frequently to see results. Me? I’ll pass.

Her Skincare Secrets: An Interview With Celebrity Facialist Joanna Vargas

Joanna Vargas skincare interviewJoanna Vargas skincare interview

Joanna Vargas went from aspiring photographer to the most sought after facialist celebrities rely on for red carpet glowing skin. Naomi Watts, Julianne Moore, Eva Mendez and even P.Diddy are just some of the Hollywood celebs that have her on speed dial.

The secret to her success goes further than her signature LED and microcurrent facials (offered at the two salons she founded in LA and NYC) to refine and reshape skin. It’s her warming personality and sparkling good humour that makes her such a pleasure to work with.

Starting her own skincare line – Joanna Vargas Skincare Collection – was the next natural step. Loaded with natural extracts like chlorophyll and sweet potato, they help nourish the skin and give it that Hollywood glow.

But what does she uses on her own skin? In this interview, Joanna Vargas shares her morning and evening skincare routines, the products she can’t live without and the lifestyle hacks that help her achieve flawless skin:

When did you become interested in skincare?

I was obsessed with beauty products since I was a child. I can remember having so many different lotions and potions as a young child! I also was really into perfume- Opium was one of my favorite smells! I also really paid attention to photography, magazine ads and commercials. I started out wanting to be a photographer, then a makeup artist. I went to esthetics school for makeup, but really fell in love with skincare immediately!

Joanna Vargas in her salonJoanna Vargas in her salon

What’s your skincare routine like?

I recommend a minimalist regimen: cleanse at night and apply a serum or a mask for sleeping. In the morning, cleanse or rinse, apply a serum, moisturizer and a sunscreen. I also exfoliate twice a week and do a beauty mask once a week.

Morning: I always wash my face at night, so in the morning I simply rinse my face with tepid water. I don’t like using extreme temperatures on my skin, because this tends to dry it out. I apply my Rejuvenating Serum to my face and neck and follow with Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer. I don’t wear much makeup for work – I think it’s nicer to see clean, fresh skin.

Night: I never go to bed without washing my face! I use my Vitamin C Face Wash, which is a foaming exfoliating cleanser. I take my makeup off with that as well, because I hate fussing with tons of products. I follow with my Daily Serum – the skin needs greens, and my formula is packed with vital greens for the skin. I apply it all over, even to the eye area. It makes the skin hydrated and lightens and brightens my face for morning. If I have a big event the next day, I will sometimes go to sleep with my Exfoliating Mask on my face. It really brightens and exfoliates for a nice, clean palette in the morning for makeup!

If you could only use three skincare products for the rest of your life, what would they be?

My all-natural, organic Daily Serum is  packed with vital greens and is inspired by my love of green juicing. It contains my favorite ingredient, Galactoarabinan, derived from the larch tree. Galactoarabinan causes more cell turnover than a glycolic, but it’s also anti-inflammatory, so it doesn’t cause irritation, even on sensitive skin. It also contains Oat Grass Juice for the lymphatic system, Chlorophyll for oxygenation, Vitamins A,C,E and F found in leafy greens, and Hyaluronic Acid. You will look glowing and fresh, even when you don’t feel it! My celebrity clients use the Daily Serum as their secret weapon to keeping the glow in their skin!

I like my Exfoliating Mask for all skin types because it’s gentle, but will calm breakouts and resurface the skin. I encourage my celebrity clients to sleep in it the night before a red carpet event. It evens out pigment, takes down inflammation and after a good night’s sleep in it, you wake up fresh faced like you have just had a facial! It’s awesome for bringing that glow back to the skin, and it will really flatten any breakouts that you might have.

My Super Nova Serum because it is a retinol that is good for all skin types. It has soothing anti-inflammatory ingredients that support the skin, so it won’t get too red or too dry and helps control the oiliness of the skin while, gently addressing aging. This retinol is a clinical strength but is gentle enough to be used around the eye area as well, which is important to address fine lines.

What are your fave skincare brands and why?

I love my Joanna Vargas Skincare line because my products are made to show instant results and are made to work for everyone. The line is based on my belief that products should provide good nutrition for the skin. Once we have that, we will have glowing skin all the time. I think because I am a facialist, I know what people are looking for and I know how to make a client happy with their skin.

I love my friend Renee Rouleau- her products are genius.

What are your top 3 skincare tips to take care of your skin?

I start any good skincare routine with diet advice: if you are breaking out or if you simply have dull skin, the best solution is adding more greens to your routine. One of my best tips is to start by eating a bit of avocado everyday as part of your salad, or even throwing a half of an avocado into your morning smoothie. Avocado supplies the skin with healthy fats and phytonutrients to hydrate from the inside out and bring back your glow.

Exfoliate! Exfoliation is my secret weapon to having great skin. It’s the most often skipped step in people’s home routine but it really makes a huge difference in the way your skin looks and feels. Think of exfoliation as your way of creating a perfect canvas for your products and your makeup. You could be investing in the most expensive amazing skin care products at home, but if you don’t exfoliate, those ingredients won’t ever penetrate to make any difference at all.

If your skin is inflamed, red, or breaking out, you should always apply your products in a downwards motion on the face towards the sides of the neck. This encourages lymphatic drainage and brings down redness immediately.

What skincare treatments do you regularly have done?

I always recommend clients have facials once a month. Nothing you do at home can replace a professional exfoliation, extraction and attention!

I recommend LED light therapy, regularly, to help keep the skin calm and restore strength and health to the skin. LED Light Therapy uses red and infrared light to reduce inflammation, build collagen and speed the healing of the body. It’s a great instant glow and the long term benefits are lessening of lines on the face, thickening of the skin and overall healthy glowing skin! In my salon, we do several different treatments that involve LED light, but by far the most popular, is  my patented RevitaLight Bed, which gives a client a full-body LED Light Therapy treatment.

Microcurrent is absolutely wonderful for lifting and toning the skin long term. I use electricity to drain out excess water, tighten the muscle and tighten the skin to make the jaw and cheeks look tight, lifted and youthful. Although it’s a non-invasive treatment, microcurrent is like going to the gym for the face. Most of my clients like to come every three to four weeks to really get the cumulative benefit. My signature Triple Crown Facial uses microcurrent and is favored by my celebrity clients. Since I designed this treatment myself, it is only available in my salon.

What lifestyle habits do you have that keep your skin in top shape?

Eating healthy is obviously good for many things, but if you want glowing skin, it is more important than you think to have a good diet. I find that the best skin diet is one that involves eating veggies of different colors for every meal and a green juice every day. There is really no substitute and it works on everyone! If I have a client who doesn’t eat salad or drink green juices, I tell them to go to Whole Foods and buy liquid chlorophyll, it tastes like mint, it oxygenates the skin, keeps skin clean, works from the inside out see a huge difference in your skin in a matter of days.

I would strongly suggest avoiding sugar, dairy and wheat. All of those things are hard to digest and lead to breakouts even in adult skin! Most people don’t realize that skin directly correlates to our digestive system. If we eat something we can’t digest or have trouble digesting, there are consequences!

Eliminating coffee in the afternoon when you are dragging your feet at work and substituting that with a green juice will do wonders for your face. It will decrease puffiness in the eyes and will even improve dark circles. Green juice will also help to oxygenate the skin, which means the skin will be better able to rid itself of impurities and bring in nutrients.
