L’Occitane Art de Vivre Candles

L'Occitane Art de Vivre Candles

Did you know that L’Occitane have a beautiful and permanent line of candles which make up the Art de Vivre collection? No? Me neither up until very recently and of course being the candle fiend that I am, ordered one of each scent to try out – for the sake of research of course, not because I have a serious problem or anything like that.

 L'Occitane Art de Vivre Candles

In the grand scheme of things, does it really matter how a candle looks? It’s like perfume bottles, as long as the juice inside smells great, I can’t say I pay it too much mind – what I’m really saying here is that I don’t buy candles to match my decor. However I do think that L’Occitane have done a great job in delivering their Art de Vivre candles in a way that they are fairly muted and neutral in design. As such they should appeal to most – not to mention they make great gifts.

Within the L’Occitane Art de Vivre collection there is four scents to chose from all of which is available across a whole range of products to scent your home and body. The idea of the Art de Vivre range does seem to be that it has been created to engulf the senses with indulgent scents, all of which have been infused with essential oils, to evoke the Provençal spirit of ‘art de vivre’.

I rather like that each fragrance has a purpose, almost akin to the benefits of aromatherapy rather than simply being dubbed a citrus, floral, what-have-you type of scent. The four fragrances within the Art de Vivre collection are:
Harmony – the scent to bring the outdoors directly into your home, said to have been created to mimic the sensory delight of taking a walk a pine forest, surrounded by the green freshness of trees. It is safe to say that this is a fresh and almost menthol type scent with strong notes of cypress, thyme, eucalyptus, juniper and ylang-ylang essential oils, to bring a feeling of harmony.
Relaxing – a gentle and sleepy blend of Lavender, sweet orange, bergamot, mandarin and geranium. If like myself you aren’t the hugest fan of Lavender fragrances this is one to seek out as you have all the relaxing benefits of said ingredient and yet thanks to the additional and somewhat fruity notes, the Lavender isn’t overpowering. A great candle to curl up with at night.

Revitalising – So you need a little pep in your step? The Revitalising Candle has been created to offer a zesty yet fresh scent using an invigorating blend of mint, pine, rosemary, sweet orange and litsea cubeba. This is the only scent out of the four that has a warm, almost sunny fragrance that does refresh and invigorate, I find myself using it whilst working at home to keep me motivated and on track.

Uplifting – Winter is long and often grey, what could be better than an uplifting and fresh fragrance of immortelle, basil, cypress, eucalyptus and litsea cubeba to pretend that you are in a sunnier destination than home.

As there are lots of candle brands within the market at the moment, finding a suitable comparison and reference point wasn’t too difficult, I’d imagine if you like Neom fragrances, this is a range you will also enjoy.
You can find all four L’Occitane Art de Vivre candles for £20/140g each here – link.

The Complete Guide To Juice Beauty Serums: What To Buy & What To Avoid

juice beauty serums guidejuice beauty serums guide

Truth bomb: I’m not a big of Juice Beauty.

There, I said. I get a lot of requests to cover this brand and I totally get why. At first glance, they’re one of the few natural brands that walk their walk.

Every product is packed to the brim with natural oils and antioxidants that promise to banish dryness, fight off wrinkles, and get rid of dark spots. But they cost a pretty penny, too.

You want to be sure they’re the real deal before splurging, you know what I mean?

But, there’s a catch…

Juice Beauty is too fond of citrus extracts, a family of ingredients that can cause havoc on the skin. Case in point: their serums. Only one passes the non-irritation test. And even then, only narrowly.

Here’s the complete guide to all Juice Beauty serums. Find out what to buy and what to avoid like the plague:

Best Juice Beauty Serums

Best For Dry Skin: Juice Beauty Signal Peptides Firming Serum ($110.00)

Let’s be clear on something: there’s nothing in Juice Beauty Signal Peptides Firming Serum that justifies the outrageously high price tag. It doesn’t even contain peptides! Instead, it’s a moisturising cocktail of squalane, shea butter, and natural oils. They strengthen your skin’s protective barrier, making it more resistant towards harsh weather and germs, and keep skin soft and plump for hours. Plus, it has a sprinkle of antioxidants to help prevent premature wrinkles. Just what the doctor ordered for dry skin. What it could do without is the citrus extracts – but at least here, they’re present in tiny amounts. I’d avoid them only if your skin is very sensitive to them.

Available at: Neiman Marcus

Juice Beauty Serums To Avoid

Juice Beauty Antioxidant Serum (£48.00)

At first glance, Juice Beauty Antioxidant Serum is a godsend for mature skin. For starters, it’s loaded with every antioxidant you can think of. Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and grape seed oil are just a few of the antioxidants proven to fight free radicals, the nasty molecules that destroy collagen and elastin, the proteins that keep your skin firmer and wrinkle-free for longer. Plus, you get your fair share of moisturising oils that can soften dry skin and keep it plump for hours. So, what’s the problem with this serum, then? It has a huge dollop of orange juice (it’s 2nd place on the list!). Citrus extracts may have antioxidant properties, but their fragrant components makes them terribly irritating for skin. If they’re high on the ingredient list, I avoid them.

Juice Beauty Stem Cellular Anti-Wrinkle Booster Serum ($80.00)

First things first: stem cells don’t work. Not as brands claim anyway. Stem cells are mother cells. They have the potential to become any type of cell in that organism. For example, an apple stem cell can turn into an apple leaf or the branch of an apple tree, regenerating the plant. But there’s no way that an apple stem cell can turn into a human skin cell. And if it can’t do that, how can it rejuvenate human skin? It can’t. Truth is, plant stem cells are just glorified antioxidants. They fight free radicals. That’s it. But that’s not the only reason why I don’t recommend Juice Beauty Stem Cellular Anti-Wrinkle Booster Serum. Like the other serums in the “to avoid” section, it has way too much lemon juice for your skin’s comfort (don’t use much of citrus anything on your skin, ladies!).

Juice Beauty Blemish Clearing Serum ($30.00)

If you’re a regular here, you’ve heard me say this a thousand times: if you’ve got pimples/blackheads, you need an exfoliant with salicylic acid. Once it’s done removing dead cells on the surface of your skin, it gets inside the pores, removing all the crap that’s clogging them up and giving you blemishes. The optimal dose to get the job done? Between 1 and 2%. Juice Beauty Blemish Clearing Serum only contains 0.75%. Bummer! If that weren’t reason alone to leave it on the shelf, hear this: Lemon juice is in 4th place on the ingredient list. That’s another irritation hazard!

Related: The Complete Guide To Salicylic Acid: What It Is, What It Does, And How To Use It

Juice Beauty Green Apple Age Defy Serum ($58.00)

Juice Beauty Green Apple Age Defy Serum claims to “visibly reduce and correct the appearance of dark spots and discoloration with an age-defying cocktail of alpha lipoic acid, CoQ10 & Vitamin C.” Sound awesome, right? Problem is, that vitamin C comes from a blend of citrus extracts. Do I have to repeat again how damaging they are for skin? Sure, citrus extracts can fight free radicals and fight discolourations – but that comes at a cost. A high risk of irritation and more sun damage (yes, citrus extracts make your skin more prone to UV damage). For the love of your skin, stay away!

Throwback Thursday – MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Soft & Gentle

MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Soft & Gentle

Like many, if not most, I have a beauty wish list that I slowly work my way through, treating myself here and there to products I really want but don’t necessarily need. Topping this list for a few years has been MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Soft & Gentle, the ultimate throwback highlighter that had previously escaped me up until now. There was a time in which no beauty influencer was without this glistening, champagne gold highlighter and after close to ten years, I’m ready to join the ranks…better late than never.

MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Soft & Gentle
MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Soft & Gentle

If you are a long term reader you will recall my MAC obsessive days in which I bought just about every collection they dropped for several years, so it may come as a somewhat surprise that I have not actually tried a few of their cult products including MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Soft & Gentle. My reasoning in this instance is that it is a, a fairly odd shade not quite peach, not quite gold and b, in the pan my gosh is it glittery, couple that with enlarged pores and it can be problematic. So what changed my mind?

MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Soft & Gentle

Honestly? A trip to the Grenta Gateway Outlet Village and a stop in the The Cosmetic Company Store in which I found the MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Soft & Gentle highly discounted, the offer was too much to pass up on and so I went home with my own shiny pan, determined that I’d make it work for me one way or another. The truth is there really is no graft involved, once buffed into the skin, the glitter quickly disperses and smooths out into a metallic sheen-come-glow that all but explains why this is a must-have item for so many.

MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Soft & Gentle

Now I have said many, rather than all for a very good reason as in my opinion this is a very middle ground shade and by that I mean if you have a extremely light or deep complexion then this might not be perfectly suited. In my opinion the issue with MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Soft & Gentle is that it leans fairly peach and warm, as such it gleams a little orange on paler skin tones and a little stark on those with a deeper complexion. Admittedly this may not be an issue but something worth noting, especially if you don’t have the time nor patience to really work this into the skin – otherwise MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Soft & Gentle is close to universally flattering and is something that I would nudge you to at least swatch the next time you are near a counter.

MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Soft & Gentle

As mentioned above, this is one of those wonderful powder products that needs next to no coaxing in order to look beautiful on the skin. Typically I apply any powder highlighter with a fan brush but as MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Soft & Gentle is so pigmented, I have found myself gravitating towards tapered blush/powder brushes for a more diffused appearance. The good news is that it does out with ease so even if you are a little heavy handed it is not something that can’t be quickly remedied – on the flip side you can amp up the finish for a more foiled look by dampening your brush or skin prior to application.

I realise that I have accidentally published this post on a Tuesday rather than a Thursday, seeing as it has took me several years to finally purchase this highlighter let alone review it, being early for once isn’t necessarily a bad thing?

Her Skincare Secret: An Interview With Medical Aesthetician Sarah Sinden-Laflèche

sarah sinden-lafleche interviewsarah sinden-lafleche interview

Prevention is better than cure. It may be a cliché, but it’s true. Especially when it comes to your skin. If you invest in it now to prevent the damage, you won’t have to worry about wrinkles too much down the line.

That’s Sarah Sinden-Laflèche’s motto. After dappling in massages at the start of her career, Sarah decided to switch directions and pursue a degree in medical aesthetics.

Now a medical aesthetician at The Ottawa Skin Clinic, she consults and educates clients about how to best care for their own unique skin needs.

But how does she take care of her own skin? In this interview, Sarah shares her top tips for younger-looking skin, the skincare products she can’t live without, and more:

1. When did you become interested in skincare?

I became interested in skincare around the age of 18-19. This was also around the time I decided to take my masters of aesthetics course.

Sarah sinden-lafleche skincare productsSarah sinden-lafleche skincare products

2. What’s your skincare routine like?

My skin care routine consists on skinceuticals products. In the morning I cleanse my skin with LHA cleanser, I apply my Phloretin CF vitamin C serum, HA intensifier, Metacell B3, Physical fusion SPF 30

At night I cleanse again with my LHA cleanser, 1-2x week I’ll apply my retinol 1%, then followed up with Resveratrol

3. If you could only use three skincare products for the rest of your life, what would they be?

That would for sure be sunscreen- physical fusion spf 50 by skinceuticals, LHA cleanser as I can’t NOT wash my face haha! And of course my vitamin C serum Phloretin CF by skinceuticals.

4. What are your fave skincare brands and why?

  • Skinceuticals
  • Vivier
  • SkinMedica

Both lines are very encompassing. They have everything you need. They are quality brands with lots of research supporting them. I also enjoy the fact that most of the time these products are sold in establishments with trained professionals who are knowledgeable in recommending the appropriate skin care.

5. What are your top 3 skincare tips to take care of your skin?

  1. Sunscreen!! Especially mineral based SPF’s.
  2. Botox and Fillers!! Don’t wait for wrinkles to happen before you decide to do something about them.
  3. Invest in your skin. You only have one! Make a point to regularly treat yourself with a Hydrafacial, Microneedling +PRP, Chemical peels.
Sarah sinden-lafleche skincare treatmentSarah sinden-lafleche skincare treatment

6. What skincare treatments do you regularly have done?

I have tried pretty much everything! IPL, LHR, Infini, Pixel skin resurfacing, Chemical peels etc… I also like to try any treatments offered in clinic so that I may guide my clients in choosing the appropriate treatment for their needs. I regularly get Microneedling + PRP to help with my pores and brighten my skin. I also try to treat myself with a Hydrafacial every 4 weeks or so as I find this treatments really helps to decongest my pores and hydrate my skin at the same time. Every 4 months I get my Botox done to prevent wrinkles!!

7. What lifestyle habits do you have that keep your skin in top shape?

I am consistent with my skin care routine. I have struggled with acne in the past and find that when I am not consistent I start to see my skin breakout and not look it’s best.

I feel it is really important to drink lots of water, exercise regularly, and try to maintain a balanced lifestyle as I really believe these all impact the health of our skin.

8. What’s in your makeup bag?

Truthfully, I own quite a bit of make up that I NEVER wear! I really try to advocate for make up free skin. When I do wear make up it is usually very simple – mascara (They’re Real by Benefit), light pressed powder, blush and lipgloss (GLO minerals).

Thank you, Sarah!

Are Preservatives Necessary in Solid Conditioners and Shampoo Bars? A Test Begins

Today, we’re going to take a look at a little test I was inspired to undertake late last year because of the seemingly endless amount of confusion about whether or not preservatives are necessary in solid conditioner and shampoo bars.

In my own formulas, preservatives are not required.

If you’re thinking I make some kind of amazing magical formulas that no one else on the planet has ever thought of before and probably ever will again, you would be incorrect.

(sorry if I just burst a bubble)

I would go so far as to maintain that anyone making conditioner and shampoo bars in a similar way to the way I make mine, will not need to add preservatives.

How to Do Cate Blanchett’s Skincare Routine

If there’s one celeb who inspires skin envy, it’s Cate Blanchett.

At 50 years old, the Australian actress is as well-known for her flawless, luminous complexion as she is for her Oscar-winning film roles.

So it’s no surprise that she was the global ambassador for the revered Japanese skincare line SK-II for 15 years, and now holds the same position for Giorgio Armani Beauty.
