Her Skincare Secrets: An Interview With Top NYC Dermatologist Dr Doris Day

Dr Doris Day skincare secretsDr Doris Day skincare secrets

“Getting older is a privilege; aging is optional.” That’s Dr Doris Day’s motto.

A board certified dermatologist who specializes in laser, cosmetic and surgical dermatology based in NYC, Dr Day is on a mission to help women celebrate and enhance their beauty through every decade.

So, what’s the secret to putting your best face forward at every age? In this interview, Dr Day shares her own skincare secrets to ageless beauty.

Read on to find out more about her skincare routine, the treatments she undergoes regularly and her top 3 skincare tips:

1. When did you become interested in skincare?

I have been interested in skin care since I was a child. My father who was a physician always stressed the importance of sun protection and of taking great care of my skin. I loved using my mom’s skin care products and it was always a treat to have her share them with me.

2. What’s your skincare routine like?

I have gone through phases. There was a time when I would barely wash my face, I was always too busy or too tired at the end of the day. I have also gone to the other extreme of layering many products morning and night but found that difficult to sustain.

I have settled on a middle ground of a great cleansing routine, using a cleansing brush and gentle cleanser, exfoliating 2 times per week and then using 2-3 products and sunscreen. I love the way my skin feels and looks and I get more compliments than ever about my skin.

I’m always testing new products so the products I use changes quite often but I’m very consistent and regular about certain ingredients that I think are important for beautiful healthy skin.

3. If you could only use three skincare products for the rest of your life, what would they be?

Sunscreen, retinol, growth factors.

4. What are your fave skincare brands and why?

Skin Medica, Skin Ceuticals, Skin Better, RestoreSea (I had to pick 4) They all are backed by science and they create products that are consistently excellent and effective.

Dr Doris DayDr Doris Day

5. What are your top 3 skincare tips to take care of your skin?

Cleansing is the most important first step. Regular exfoliation, managing stress and staying hydrated.

6. What skincare treatments do you regularly have done?

I have done many: Fractional lasers, Ultherapy, Thermage, hydrafacial. I have over 30 devices and lasers! I regularly do Ultherapy once a year and Thermage once a year, hydrafacial once every 6 weeks, emsculpt every 6 weeks (I’m on the maintenance schedule), Fotona hair laser every 3 months (to keep my hair thick and full).

7. What lifestyle habits do you have that keep your skin in top shape?

Sunscreen and being sun smart, I try to drink or eat plenty of water (fruits and vegetables). Sleep is critical for me- I give up going out or even eating dinner to make sure I get a good 7-8 hours of sleep, thinking good thoughts and being positive. I also do facial exercises.

8. What’s in your makeup bag?

Too much stuff! I have eyeliners, sunscreen, foundation, highlighter, bronzer, brushes, makeup remover wipes, dental floss, mirror to help apply makeup on the go, lipstick.

Thank you, Dr Day!

Don’t forget to check out Dr Day’s website. You can also keep up with her on Instagram and Facebook.

Self Preserving Botanical Cleansing Concoction – an Experiment

If I hadn’t made this concoction myself, I would have sworn it was pumped up with added colorants and scents such, but it isn’t. The contents of this bottle is 100% natural. Not only does it smell fabulous and look delicious, it’s behaving like an absolute darling to boot.

To be honest, I halfway expected to be blogging about this as a major fail, but so far, it hasn’t turned out that way, so I decided to share the ‘so-far’ with you.

Hyaluronic Acid Skincare Benefits: Do You Need It?

Hyaluronic Acid is my skincare hero.

Whenever my skin gets a little dry and flaky, I just have to put out an SOS and it comes to save the day. Within a few short days, my skin is back to its soft, plumpy self.

Thanks, Hyaluronic Acid!

His super power? A big moisture magnet. When he’s around, moisture flocks to the skin faster than I can say “go”. Here’s what makes it so irresistible:

What The Heck Is Hyaluronic Acid?

This may sound surprising and a little stalkish, but Hyaluronic Acid has been with you since birth. It’s a glycosaminoglycans (a fancy way of calling long, unbranched sugar) that naturally occurs in your body’s connective tissue.

In plain English, Hyaluronic Acid is part of the glue that holds skin cells together.

Fun fact: this superhero owes his name to hyalos, the Greek word for glass, and the sugar uronic acid. Yep, if you could see Hyaluronic Acid with the naked eye, it’d have a glossy appearance.

skinceuticals ha intensifierskinceuticals ha intensifier

What Does Hyaluronic Acid Do For Your Skin?

It’s a moisture magnet!

Here’s how it works. Hyaluronic Acid is a humectant. That’s a fancy way of saying that it attracts moisture from the environment into the skin, pumping up its hydration levels.

Other ingredients do this. Glycerin and Urea spring to mind immediately. But Hyaluronic Acid goes the extra mile: it can bind up to 1000 times its weight in water! That’s a waterfall of moisture!

Like Korean skincare teaches, hydrated skin = happy skin. When skin has all the moisture it needs, it his softer to the touch; it’s all plumped up, which in turn makes wrinkles look smaller; and has that beautiful dewy glow that makes it look like it’s lit from within.

Hydration is Hyaluronic Acid’s main job, but this superhero has other tricks up its sleeve. It also:

niod multi-molecular hyaluronic complexniod multi-molecular hyaluronic complex

Where’s The Catch?

Yes, there’s one.

As a rule, anything that is bigger than 500 Daltons can’t penetrate the skin. Guess what? Hyaluronic Acid is way bigger than that.

No worries, it still works. Hyaluronic Acid stays on the surface, plumping up and hydrating the most superficial layers. But if you want the added benefits of increased elasticity etc, it needs to penetrate the skin.

You have two options here:

  1. Hyaluronic Acid fillers (not an option for this needle phobic girl)
  2. Low molecular weight Hyaluronic Acid

Yep, these days, Hylauronic Acid comes in all sizes. Niod Multi-Molecular Hyaluronic Acid Complex, for example, uses 12! Some of these forms are big and stay on the surface of the skin while others are smaller and can get in.

I wouldn’t use too many of the smaller forms, though. Low molecular weight Hyaluronic Acid is too friendly to other molecules, helping them slip into the skin, too. If one of them happens to be irritating, or your skin is particularly sensitive, this may cause inflammation.

Mind you, this is a problem with all penetration-enhancers. That’s why you need to read the labels to ensure there’s nothing irritating in your products in the first place.

One more thing: Hyaluronic Acid works best at concentrations BELOW 2%. Don’t worry if you don’t see it at the top of the ingredient list. It’ll still do the job fine.

The Bottom Line

Hyaluronic Acid is a godsend for dry skin: it plumps it up, hydrates it and gives it a soft, dewy glow. Just don’t go overboard!

How To Choose The Best Exfoliator For Your Skin Type

how to choose the best exfoliator for your skin typehow to choose the best exfoliator for your skin type

“I have sensitive skin. Can I exfoliate?”

“Last time I tried an exfoliator, my skin got so red and sore. Should I really give it another go?”

“Exfoliation’s not working for me. I’ve tried every scrub under the sun to get rid of my pimples, but those nasty buggers are still there. What else can I do?”

Don’t give up on exfoliation. No matter your skin type or what woes you’re dealing with, exfoliation IS the key to the brighter, smoother and pimple-free skin you crave.

But then… why does exfoliation often backfire? The problem is not exfoliation itself. It’s what you use to exfoliate.

That’s right. Different skin types have different needs. They need different exfoliators to fulfil them. Question now is, how do the heck do you know which one is right for YOU?

I’ve got your back. Here’s how to choose the best exfoliator for your skin type:

Why Should You Exfoliate?

First thing first: what the heck is the point of exfoliation?

Exfoliation  does wonders for your skin. It removes the dead cells that accumulate on the surface of the skin.

You see, those dead cells have been there for a while. They’ve been attacked by UV rays, pollution, germs and all other sorts of skin enemies. Day after day, they’ve suffered so much damage, they’ve become rough to the touch, developed a darker colour here and there, and lost all their glow.

Get rid of them and you expose the newer skin underneath. These new cells didn’t suffer much damage yet, so they’re softer to the touch, even in colour and have a glow of their own.

Exfoliation doesn’t just make you look younger overnight. Now those dead cells are out of the way, your skincare products can penetrate skin better and faster.

One more thing: some exfoliators can get inside the pores, unclogging them from within. Bye bye breakouts!

Related: 10 Reasons Why You Should Exfoliate Your Skin

How Do You Exfoliate Skin?

Did you know your skin can exfoliate on its own?

Problem is, as you get older, this natural exfoliation process breaks down. Your skin can’t exfoliate as well as it used to on its own.

You can tell when this is happening. You skin becomes rough. It loses its glow. You may get more pimples than before.

That’s your cue to give your skin a helping hand. You can do this in two ways:

1. Physical exfoliation

Physical exfoliation means you’re manually scrubbing dead cells off your skin. You can do this with:

  • Apricot kernels
  • Clarisonic
  • Foreo Luna
  • Microbeads
  • Salt
  • Sugar
  • Washcloth

Basically, if you’re using a scrub or a “cleansing device” (they’re exfoliators in disguise!), you belong to Team Physical Exfoliation.

Physical exfoliation is the most popular type of exfoliation. Heck, for years, those harsh apricot scrubs were all you could find at the drugstore!

I’m not a fan of physical exfoliation. Let me count the reasons why:

  • Natural particles like apricot kernels have rough, jagged edges that scratch and irritate skin
  • Plastic microbeads are polluting
  • Cleansing devices are too harsh to be used everyday as advertised
  • Massage them a little too long and you irritate skin
  • Massage them longer on the cheeks than the forehead and you get uneven exfoliation
  • They’re one-trick ponies that only exfoliate skin

Related: Is The Clarisonic Good Or Bad For Skin?

2. Chemical exfoliation

Don’t let the name scare you. Chemical exfoliation is a gamechanger.

Chemical exfoliation uses acids to dissolve the “glue” that holds skin cells together, so they can slough off.

I know it sounds painful but it’s not. Not unless you abuse it. Exfoliating too much or too often always leads to irritation. In small doses, chemical exfoliators are way gentler than scrubs, exfoliate skin evenly and go the extra mile.

I’ll go into the benefits of each exfoliant in a minute. For now, all you need to know is that chemical exfoliants belong to two different families:

  • Alpha Hydroxy Acids: they’re suitable for dry and sun-damaged skin. The most famous members are glycolic acid and lactic acid.
  • Beta Hydroxy Acids: they’re suitable for oily and acne-prone skin. Its most famous remember is salicylic acid.

Why Exfoliation Can Screw Up Skin (And How To Avoid It)

Exfoliation is like magic for your skin. But even good magic can terribly backfire if you do it wrong.

You see, those dead cells are there for a reason. Their job is to protect the living cells underneathIf you remove too many layers of dead cells, you expose the rawer cells that weren’t ready to come to the surface yet.

That’ll turn your face red (and hurt like hell). So how do you avoid it? Easy. To find the best exfoliator for you, you need to know two things:

  1. Your skin type (if you don’t know it already, check out this post to find yours)
  2. How often you can exfoliate your skin type before it starts to complain

The Best Exfoliator For Each Skin Type

If you’ve read this far, you know your skin type. So what’s the best exfoliator for it and how often should you use it? Let’s find out:

Oily And Acne-Prone Skin

What to use:

Salicylic acid. This beta hydroxy acid is the best exfoliator for oily skin – bar none. It exfoliates skin in two ways. It removes dead cells from the surface of the skin, and then penetrates inside the pores, getting rid of all the crap that’s clogging them up. Bye bye blackheads & breakouts.

How often?

This is the skin type that better tolerates exfoliation. I recommend you start exfoliating three times a week. But, if your skin can take it, you can gradually increase frequency.

But if, as you get older, you notice it starts lose its luster and become a little rough, go for a glycolic acid exfoliant. It’s the best exfoliator for your skin type because it boosts the production of collagen, helping to keep wrinkles at bay.

How often?

Go easy on exfoliation. Your won the skincare lottery so don’t mess it up now! Once or twice a week is more than enough.

Happy Birthday, Glass Skin!

Hi Peaches!

I can’t believe it’s been one year since we launched our Glass Skin Refining Serum. My biggest hope when developing this serum was to create a toxin-free, high-performance, delightful product that would make it easy for all of you to achieve your best skin yet. Essentially, that means skin that appears so poreless, luminous, and translucent, it looks like a crystal-clear pane of glass — hence, glass skin

Over the last year, we’ve heard from so many of you saying, “Oh my gosh, I have glass skin now!” We love hearing your stories because everything we do here at Peach & Lily is for you. You’re the most important people in the room, and we’re always thinking about all the ways we can better help meet your skin needs.

That’s why it’s the most rewarding thing for us when you show us your love and support. Over the past year, you’ve been pouring out your love for our Glass Skin Refining Serum, sending us DMs and e-mails and leaving enthusiastic reviews on our site. Every single comment has truly brought a smile to our face; it’s been so humbling to be able to see your skin transform into what looks like glass skin.

And what better way to celebrate a year filled with love than by giving love back?

As you may know, for the last four years, we’ve been partnering with Restore NYC to contribute to their cause: rescuing and restoring sex-trafficked women right here in NYC. We’ve had the privilege to meet some of these women, and their stories of resilience and restoration are inspiring and humbling.

We want to build a more beautiful community by making a difference where we can. Today, we’d like to invite each of you to do good while looking good.

To wish Glass Skin a happy first birthday, we will be donating $50,000 of net proceeds of the Glass Skin Serum! That means we’ll be donating 100% of all proceeds from the Glass Skin Serum until we reach $50,000!

Help us spread the word — not only will your friends love the Glass Skin Serum, but they can also know that they are making a profound difference in the lives of so many women.

Thank you for a year of loving our Glass Skin, and here’s to many more! Cheers to radiance!

3 of Our Favorite Things: Solid Oil-Based Cleansers.

You know we’re all about the double cleansing technique. Start with an oil-based cleanser to remove your makeup and oil-based impurities, and follow that with a water-based cleanser to sweep away sweat, dirt, and other water-based impurities.

Cleansers can come in different textures, from oils to gels to foams, amongst others, and there’s no “best” among them — it’s really about finding the cleansers that work for you and your skin. Certain textures do play better with different skin types; for example, a foaming cleanser might be too drying for dry skin but great for oily skin, while a gel cleanser might be great for normal to dry skin but too light for oily skin.

We recommend the double cleansing technique, whatever your skin type! Whether you have oily skin or dry skin or sensitive skin, the double cleansing technique gives skin the gentle but thorough treatment that helps it thrive by sweeping away bad oils and impurities without disrupting the balance of oils, good bacteria, and fatty acids that help protect skin. Here are three of our favorite first-step oil-based cleansers that come in solid form.

OIL-BASED CLEANSER PEACH SLICES

Peach Slices, Peach Pudding Makeup Cleanser

Key benefits: soothing, hydrating, cooling
Key ingredients: jojoba and macadamia oil, peach extract

The Peach Slices Peach Pudding Makeup Cleanser has a delightful, bouncy texture. It melts onto skin upon contact, dissolving makeup and impurities away gently without stripping skin dry, and all it takes are a few splashes of water to rinse everything — cleanser, makeup, impurities — off skin. There’s no dripping, no mess, no oily residue, just clean, hydrated skin.

OIL-BASED CLEANSER BANILA CO

Banila Co, Clean It Zero Cleansing Balm

Key benefits: hydrating, calming
Key ingredients: bamboo extract, acerola extract, onsen water

Fun fact? Every three seconds, someone buys a Clean It Zero Cleansing Balm. Other fun fact? There are actually four different versions of this — Original for all skin types, Purifying for sensitive skin, Nourishing for dry skin, and Revitalizing for oily/combination skin.

All four versions come as a solid balm and with a spatula to make it easy to scoop the Cleansing Balm out onto your hand. The balm becomes a soft, warm oil as you massage it against your skin, working on even the most stubborn, waterproof makeup and sweeping away impurities. When you add water, the balm emulsifies into a soft lather, and skin is left clean and hydrated.

OIL-BASED CLEANSER FEMMUE

Femmue, Extraordinary Beauty Cleansing Balm

Key benefits: lightweight, soothing, no synthetic fragrance
Key ingredients: olive oil, rosehip oil, sunflower seed oil, rose extract

The Femmue Extraordinary Beauty Cleansing Balm starts as a smooth jelly texture, transforming into a silky, luxurious oil as you massage it against skin. The oil is warming, helping open up pores for a deeper, more thorough cleanse. When you add water, the oil turns into a milky texture that washes easily off skin, leaving no residue and sweeping away excess oil and impurities.

These are just three oil-based cleansers in solid form that we particularly love, but there are so many others out there. Remember to follow up with your favorite water-based cleanser to get that thorough but gentle cleanse that doesn’t disrupt your skin’s natural barrier and leaves skin clean, hydrated, and supple.

Tell us in the comments below! What are you favorite solid oil-based cleansers?

Is Mad Hippie Facial SPF 30+ The Best Natural Sunscreen?

mad hippie facial spf30+ best natural sunscreenmad hippie facial spf30+ best natural sunscreen

Is Mad Hippie Facial SPF 30+ the best natural sunscreen out there? It sure has a lot going for it.

Gentle UV filters that provide broad spectrum protection without irritating skin? Check.

Its fair share of antioxidants to boost sun protection? Check.

A texture that feels like you’ve got nothing on? Check.

Yet, it has a couple of small flaws that can make it or break it for you. Should you go for it or leave it on the shelf? Let’s find out:

Key Ingredients In Mad Hippie Facial SPF 30+

Zinc Oxide To Provide Broad Spectrum Protection

It’s no secret zinc oxide is my fave UV filter. This white mineral protects, ON ITS OWN, from the entire UV range. UVA, UVB… it makes all rays harmless to your skin.

Plus, it’s so gentle that even six year old babies and super sensitive skin can use it. I have friends who thought there were allergic to sunscreen and then tried zinc oxide… Turns out they were allergic to some chemical UV filter.

So… where’s the catch? Zinc oxide has a thick, white texture. There are ways to work around that and make it more lightweight and pleasant to use but…

Mad Hippie Facial SPF 30+ uses a whopping 16% non-nano zinc oxide. Unless you’ve got fair skin like me, it WILL leave a white cast on your skin.

Related: What Can You Do If You’re Allergic To Sunscreen?

Shea Butter & Natural Oils To Moisturise Skin

Mad Hippie Facial SPF 30+ uses a generous dollop of shea butter, one of the most moisturising substances on this planet. Studies shows it works even better than mineral oil (the gold standard for moisturization, according to dermatologists).

It works because it creates a barrier on the skin that slows down water loss. Its effects last for up to 8 hours! Plus, shea butter has its fair share of antioxidants to fight premature aging and boost sun protection.

FYI, shea butter doesn’t play alone. This sunscreen also uses avocado, carrot and raspberry seed oils to help moisturise dry skin and keep it soft and smooth all day.

Fragrant Oils To Make The Sunscreen Smell Good

Now for the not so good part… Mad Hippie Facial SPF 30+ contains sweet orange and jasmine oils, two oils that give it an uplifting floral citrusy scent.

It’s absolutely gorgeous. And irritating. Fragrant oils like these can easily irritate sensitive skin. If only Mad Hippie removed them, this sunscreen would be almost perfect.

FYI, if you have resistant skin that can tolerate pretty much anything, you’ll be able to use this without problems. But if you know your skin reacts badly to these oils, stay away!

Let’s Put It To The Test: Personal Use & Opinion

Mad Hippie Facial SPF 30+ isn’t the thickest mineral sunscreen I’ve ever tried (Phew!). It’s not the most lightweight, either. It falls somewhere in between.

It’s thick enough it takes a few minutes to pat it into the skin. If you’re in a rush, this ain’t the right option for you… Yet, it’s lightweight enough you don’t feel like you’re wearing it once it’s properly on.

I shake the bottle well before application. It makes the texture easier to apply but… there’s no way around the white cast. It’s not that noticeable on me. I’m so pale, I look like Casper The Ghost anyway.

If you’ve got darker skin, just wait 15 minutes until it dries down and then apply foundation on top. DON’T mix the sunscreen with foundation! That dilutes the SPF.

I haven’t tested this on the beach yet, but we’ve had some summer days in London these past couple of weeks and this did a great job at protecting my skin. I didn’t develop a slight tan or get sunburnt.

It’s fairly hydrating, too. I slather it on after Vitamin C serum, skipping moisturizer entirely. My skin still feels softer for hours, so I know it has all the moisture it needs.

I don’t think I’ll be repurchasing just because I prefer sunscreens with a lighter textures. But if you’re looking for an all natural sunscreen that doesn’t break the bank, this is a good option to consider (as long as you’re not sensitive to fragrance!).

Available at: $24.99/£22.00 at Free People, iHerb and Ulta

What Are The Best Skincare Products For Pregnant Women?

best pregnancy-safe skincare productsbest pregnancy-safe skincare products

What are the best skincare products for pregnant women?

Pregnancy can give you that beautiful radiant glow. Or it can play tricks on your skin that leave it blotched with acne, melasma or heightened sensitivity (as if morning sickness weren’t enough).

The worst part? Your old trusted staples won’t do. Retinol, Benzoyl peroxide and everything else you were using to deal with all the skincare drama before pregnancy is now banned from your skincare routine. They’re not safe for baby.

So what is? Here are the best pregnancy-safe skincare products to deal with aging, dark spots and more during this special time in your life:

Prevent Antiaging With Antioxidants

Retinoids are off limits during pregnancy. Studies show they cause birth defects in mice. Sure, we’re not mice but… why take the risk?

Keep retinoids on the shelves till you’ve done breastfeeding. In the meantime, fill your skincare routines with as many antioxidants as you can find.

Think of antioxidants as your body’s police. They patrol your body, looking for free radicals, the nasty molecules that destroy collagen, elastin, cellular DNA and everything else they find on their path. When they spot one, they destroy it before they can give you wrinkles and dark spots.

Best Picks:

Exfoliate With Lactic Acid

The jury’s still out there on whether exfoliating acids are safe for pregnancy. I personally believe that it’s only peels that are dangerous. In the small concentrations used in cosmetics, glycolic & co should be fine.

But what if you don’t want to take the risk, however small? Stick to lactic acid. It’s gentler than other acids out there. Plus, your body makes a lot of it already, so it won’t cause your baby any harm.

Best Picks:

  • The Ordinary Lactic Acid 5% + HA 2% (£5.50): Suitable even for the most sensitive of skin types, this exfoliant contains a very low concentration of lactic acid to smoothen and brighten the skintone. Plus, it’s hydrating. Available at Asos, Beauty Bay, Cult Beauty and Feel Unique.
  • The Inkey List Lactic Acid (£7.99): A hydrating exfoliating with 10% lactic acid to remove those pesky dead cells off the surface and unveil smoother, softer and brighter skin. Available at Cult Beauty and Feel Unique.

Protect Skin From UV Harm With Mineral Sunscreens

Did you know that avobenzone get absorbed by your body? We know this because it’s been found in urine (eww!). That’s good news: it means your body’s getting rid of it so it can’t harm you.

But just because it’s safe for mama, it doesn’t mean it’s safe for baby. That’s why it’s best to avoid chemical UV filters (yes, avobenzone ain’t the only one that gets into your body) during pregnancy.

So what can you use? Mineral UV filters titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. They tend to be a little thicker and sometimes even leave a white cast behind. But they’re super gentle and 100% safe for mum and baby.

Best Picks:
