Meet Your New Favorite Sunscreen.

We all know that sun damage degrades our skin taking away from our bouncy, lifted, glowing glass skin, but did you know that studies show that, for many people, about 80% of skin aging happens in the summer? We know that wearing SPF daily is key to keeping skin looking and feeling its best. Unfortunately, we also know that that’s often easier said than done. A lot of sunscreens can sit heavily on top of skin, leave a white cast, or even irritate skin, clogging pores with heavy formulations that dry out skin and just don’t feel good.

Wearing sunscreen daily then becomes that chore that never gets done — or only gets done reluctantly from time to time. We all know our skin needs protection from the sun, though.

This is why we went on one of our most important beauty curation journeys! We tested hundreds of different sunscreens, trying to find one that met all our criteria:

  1. Fast-absorbing with no residue, chalkiness, or dryness
  2. Absolutely no white cast
  3. Truly weightless
  4. Effective protection against UVA/UVB rays and environmental pollutants
  5. A matte but hydrated finish

It sounds like an impossible task, and, sometimes, along the journey, we admit we felt discouraged, too. We’d find a sunscreen that felt weightless and absorbed quickly, but it didn’t provide adequate protection. Or we’d find a sunscreen that provided excellent protection from both UVA/UVB rays and environmental pollutants, but it would leave us looking like a ghost with pallid skin. Or we’d find a sunscreen that left a matte finish but made our skin feel heavy and chalky and weighed down.

And then we found this Daily Mild Sun Cream from Village 11 Factory.

The light, almost milky cream absorbed quickly. It left zero white cast. It felt truly weightless on our skin, like we hadn’t applied anything at all. With SPF 50+ PA++++, it provided us from both UVA and UVB rays, and it was formulated using titanium dioxide, a natural mineral that reflects UV rays away from skin and rarely causes irritation. It left our skin feeling hydrated and happy, matte but dewy.

(Note: it’s important to find a sunscreen that protects skin from both UVA and UVB rays! UVA and UVB rays affect skin differently; UVA rays are more commonly linked to premature aging, while UVB rays are more commonly linked to skin diseases.)

As we started to learn more about the Daily Mild Sun Cream, we learned that it uses proprietary technology developed by Village 11 Factory that helps the Sun Cream form a barrier on skin, protecting it from pollutants and environmental stressors. The Sun Cream also contains beautiful plant-based ingredients that help hydrate, soothe, and calm skin, ingredients like portulaca oleracea extract (helps soothe skin), chia seed extract (helps protect skin), and centella asiatica extract (helps heal and calm skin). There’s also niacinamide to help brighten and even skin tone, as well as squalane that helps deeply hydrate and, even, balance oil production!

We’re so excited to bring you this wonderful sunscreen! With the Daily Mild Sun Cream, we’re sure you’ll be so excited to wear sunscreen everyday; it won’t be that product you know you need but want to avoid anymore. Now you can go out and get your daily vitamin D without worrying about sun damage — and, before you ask, studies show that sunscreen doesn’t drastically affect the absorption of vitamin D and that as little as 10 to 30 minutes of sunlight are sufficient! Our recommendation is to be diligent about applying sunscreen to protect your skin, especially with a worry-free sunscreen like the Daily Mild Sun Cream!

Cheers to radiance and happy, carefree days protected from the sun!

Is Nip + Fab Glycolic Fix Liquid Glow Extreme 6% As Extreme As It Claims?

nip + fab glycolic fix liquid glow extreme 6% reviewnip + fab glycolic fix liquid glow extreme 6% review

I wouldn’t call 6% glycolic acid “extreme”.

My skin’s used to higher doses. But Nip + Fab Glycolic Fix Liquid Glow Extreme 6% is the strongest glycolic acid exfoliant the brand makes.

If you’re a teen or young adult – Nip + Fab’s target audience – and your skin’s still behaving as it should, 6% is an extreme dose for you. Baby steps, ladies. Start small and increase your glycolic acid fix when YOU need it, not when Cosmo tells you to.

Key Ingredients In Nip + Fab Glycolic Fix Liquid Glow Extreme 6%

Glycolic Acid To Exfoliate Skin

Glycolic acid is the star of the show here. It’s the smallest member of the Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) family, a group of acids that exfoliates skin by dissolving the glue that holds skin cells together.

Once the old, superficial layer of damaged cells is off your face, your complexion is brighter and softer. The texture of your skin looks smoother and more even-toned, too.

That’s not all. Glycolic acid is a moisture magnet that attracts water into the skin, helping to keep it hydrated. It boosts collagen production, too – but at higher concentrations. *sighs*

Its small size means glycolic acid can penetrate skin deeper than other acids. That means it works better… but is more irritating. If you have sensitive skin, this is NOT for you.

Sensitive skin fares better with lactic acid. That just happens to be in Nip + Fab Glycolic Fix Liquid Glow Extreme 6%, but at much lower dose. It’s more hydrating than exfoliating here.

Related: Glycolic Acid VS Lactic Acid: Which One Should You Use?

Salicylic Acid To Unclog Pores

Salicylic acid is the only member of the Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA) family used in skincare. Like AHAs, BHA dissolves the glue that holds skin cells together so they can slough off and reveal the brighter and smoother skin underneath.

Unlike AHAs, salicylic acid is oil-soluble. This means it can get past the skin’s lipid layer and get inside the pores. Once there, it removes all the crap that’s clogging them up and giving you blackheads, whiteheads and pimples.

The catch? I don’t think there’s enough salicylic acid in Nip + Fab Glycolic Fix Liquid Glow Extreme 6% to exfoliate pores and fight acne. 🙁

Related: AHAs VS BHA: Which One Is Right For You?

Niacinamide To Moisturize Skin

Niacinamide is another ingredient that’s not present in a massive amount in Nip + Fab Glycolic Fix Liquid Glow Extreme 6%. But hey, I’d rather get a little niacinamide than none at all. This form of vitamin B3 is a multi-tasker:

No matter what you’re dealing with, a little niacinamide can only help.

Related: The Complete Guide To Niacinamide: What It is, What It Does & How To Use It

Let’s Put It To The Test: Personal Use & Opinion

Nip + Fab Glycolic Fix Liquid Glow Extreme 6% has a liquidy, runny texture that doesn’t leave a sticky residue behind. You need to apply it with a cotton pad all over your face.

If you’re new to glycolic acid or have sensitive skin, you may experience a little tingling. I didn’t – my skin is used to it.

I apply it straight after cleasning 3 nights a week, but if you’re a teen once or twice is more than enough. Your skin is doing most of the exfoliation on its own, so it doesn’t need much of a helping hand.

After the first use, my skin already looked a little brighter. Dewy glow aside, the toner also smooths out the texture of my skin and makes it softer to the touch.

Instead, it didn’t help me that much with blackheads. They tend to spring up on my nose if I’m not careful. This toner didn’t send them packing, but it didn’t make things worse either. I can’t say I’m surprised. You need a higher dose of salicylic acid to deal with any type of acne.

The only thing I could do without is the scent. It smells citrusy and summery but fragrances increase the risk of irritation. If that’s not a dealbreaker for you, go for it.

Three Practical Ways to Manage Stressed Skin

We think it’s fair to say that we all deal with stress on a daily level. Some days, our stress levels are low, and, on other days, our stress levels are higher — that’s pretty normal! Sometimes, though, we struggle with chronic, elevated stress, and it starts to take its toll, whether in our moods or the quality of our sleep or in our relationships. Stress also affects our skin.

When we’re stressed, our bodies respond like they do to wounds — by releasing chemicals and hormones (you’ve heard of cortisol, the stress hormone) that trigger inflammation. In a normal situation, inflammation is how the body heals; it’s one of our bodies’ immune response to damage or harm. When we’re in a state of chronic, elevated stress, though, our bodies are in a constant state of imbalance, our immune responses going haywire and triggering too much inflammation all the time, which can have an impact on skin.

If you have a pre-existing skin condition, like eczema or rosacea, you might find that chronic stress triggers a flare-up or just makes an ongoing episode so much worse. If you have acne-prone skin, you might find yourself struggling with more active breakouts; inflammation, after all, is already one of the causes for acne.

You don’t have to have a skin condition for your skin to react negatively to stress, though. Even normal skin can react to stress.

How should you help your skin when you’re stressed and your skin is getting stressed? We know it’s pretty unhelpful advice just to say, “Manage your stress levels,” so, instead of that, we’ve got three practical ways you can help your skin.

Go For Gentle.

When you’re stressed and your skin is stressed, you might want to step back from stronger products and pare things down to the basics. Stress already increases inflammation, so focus on soothing skin with gentle products that have anti-inflammatory properties and help hydrate, nourish, and calm. When your skin starts to go back to normal, you can always reintroduce stronger products like retinols, vitamin C serums, and powerful exfoliators.

We especially want to stress a gentle cleansing routine, one that doesn’t strip your skin dry or compromise your natural skin barrier. We like a cleanser like Atoclassic’s Real Tonic Soothing Multi Cleanser; it contains no sulfates and has a pH of 5.5, making it very gentle. It uses a blend of root and herbal extracts found in Korean traditional medicine to help soothe and restore skin, so it’s a great cleanser for sensitive or stressed skin.

Stay Consistent With a Routine!

Don’t neglect your routine! One of the keys when it comes to skin health is consistency, and, even if you only have time to do the very basics of cleansing, toning, and moisturizing, make sure to do that every day. Here at Pibuu, though, we believe that taking the time to do a skincare routine every day is not just good for skin health — it’s also a great way to de-stress every day, serving as a way to manage stress levels.

Maybe it sounds a little silly in the grand scheme of things, but making the time to do a skincare routine can be a way of caring for yourself. It can be mentally and emotionally calming to focus on your skin, away from the stressors in your life, and maybe even taking the time to do a facial massage while doing a breathing exercise or meditation to help calm and center your mind. The Peach & Lily Glass Skin Refining Serum is particularly suited for a facial massage, with a thicker texture that cools and soothes skin. The serum itself is packed with beneficial, antioxidant-rich ingredients like peach extract, mountain yam extract, niacinamide, and madecassoside to help nourish stressed skin, as well as hyaluronic acid to help deeply hydrate.

Get Enough Sleep.

They call it beauty sleep for a reason, after all! As we sleep, our bodies go into restorative mode, healing itself and recharging neurons, and our skin is no different. It’s why dermatologists will often tell clients to apply medication meant to help repair skin before they go to sleep, and it’s the idea behind sleeping packs, which you might apply in lieu of your moisturizer at night. Sleeping packs take advantage of the restorative period of sleep, and they’re often full of powerful ingredients and formulated in ways to help them really sink into skin and help with rejuvenation as you sleep. With the help of a sleeping pack, getting enough sleep helps manage your stress levels while helping alleviate stressed skin.

The Dream Age Sleeping Pack from Rose by Dr. Dream specifically harnesses the power found in the rose, starting with rose distilled water for its skin-conditioning properties and adding rose stem cells to help encourage skin rejuvenation. It also has aloe and hyaluronic acid to hydrate, niacinamide to brighten, and portulaca oleracea extract to help soothe, and the natural rose scent will help soothe you mentally as you drift off to sleep.

We hope those are helpful, practical ways to help manage stressed skin. If you have any questions, leave them in the comments below!

The Complete Guide To Peter Thomas Roth Face Masks: Which One Is Right For You?

peter thomas roth face mask guide - which one is best for your skin typepeter thomas roth face mask guide - which one is best for your skin type

What’s the best Peter Thomas Roth face mask for your skin type?

The guy’s the king of face masks. He has one for everything:

Acne? Check.

Exfoliation? Check.

Soothing sensitive skin? Check.

Problem is, how do you know which one YOU need? And do they all work or are there some duds in the line (hint: there ARE some duds in the line).

Here’s the complete guide to Peter Thomas Roth face masks to help you choose the best one for your skin type and needs:

Peter Thomas Roth 24K Gold Mask ($80.00)

What it is: Touted as “the ultimate luxurious anti-aging treatment”, this gold-rich mask promises to firm skin and make it glow.

Key Ingredients: Gold, a precious metal that fights inflammation. One study on the effects of gold on rheumatoid arthritis found it can boost collagen production.  Problem is, I couldn’t find any proof gold does this in skincare, as well.

What it does: I’m sceptical about its firming properties. Just because it works for rheumatoid arthritis doesn’t mean it’s good for skin. But the mask is super hydrating thanks to hyaluronic acid, a moisture-booster that attracts and binds to the skin up to 1000 times its weight in water. Mica, a.k.a. “natural glitter,” gives the complexion a beautiful glow, too.

Best for: I recommend it as an extravagant pampering treat – if you’ve got the money to spare.

Available at: Beauty Bay, Cult Beauty, Sephora and Ulta

Related: Gold In Skincare: Is It Worth Its Weight?

Peter Thomas Roth Irish Moor Mud Purifying Black Mask ($58.00)

What it is: A clay mask that absorbs excess oil while hydrating skin.

Key Ingredients: The Irish Mud makes for a cool story, but it’s charcoal powder + kaolin and bentonite clays that do the heavy lifting here and soak up all excess oil. Glycerin hydrates skin.

What it does: It absorbs excess oil from your skin, helping you to keep shine and pimples at bay. Glycerin adds some hydration to counterbalance the drying effects of the clays.

Best for: Oily skin.

Available at: Anthropologie, Beauty Bay, Cult Beauty, Sephora and Ulta

Related: Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Bentonite In Skincare

Peter Thomas Roth Hungarian Thermal Water Mineral-Rich Atomic Heat Mask ($58.00)

What it is: A hydrating mask with thermal water.

Key Ingredients: Thermal water is rich in minerals and nutrients that moisturize and soothe skin. But it’s not the fountain of youth the brand claims it to be!

What it does: Loaded with shea butter, natural oils and thermal water, this hydrating mask deeply moisturizes dry skin, leaving it softer and smoother.

Best for: Dry skin.

Available at: Beauty Bay, Dermstore, Sephora and Ulta

Related: Is Thermal Water Just Fancy Water In A Pretty Bottle?

Peter Thomas Roth Pumpkin Enzyme Mask ($58.00)

What it is: An exfoliating mask that smoothens and brightens the complexion.

Key Ingredients: Pumpkin enzymes gently dissolve the glue that holds skin cells together so they can slough off, while aluminum oxyde crystals get rid of them manually.

What it does: An enzyme + physical exfoliant rolled into one, it removes dead cells to reveal the brighter, softer and smoother skin hiding underneath.

Best for: I don’t recommend physical exfoliants. But if you dig them, this is gentler than most.

Available at: Beauty Bay, Cult Beauty, Dermstore, Sephora and Ulta

Related: Chemical VS Physical Exfoliation: What’s The Difference & Which One Is Right For You?

Peter Thomas Roth Cucumber Gel Mask ($52.00)

What it is: A soothing mask to calm down dry, irritated skin.

Key Ingredients: Cucumber, aloe and chamomile have anti-inflammatory properties that soothe redness and irritations.

What it does: The mask is loaded with natural extracts that can soothe sensitive skin. Problem is, it has a few citrusy extracts that can irritate it as well! If you know your skin reacts to fragrance or anything citrusy, this isn’t for you.

Best for: Dry skin that’s not too sensitive.

Available at: Beauty Bay, Cult Beauty, Dermstore, Sephora and Ulta

Related: 7 Natural Ingredients That Can Irritate Skin

Peter Thomas Roth Rose Stem Cell Gel Mask ($52.00)

What it is: A hydrating mask infused with rose stem cells to, in PTR’s words, ” help invigorate and improve the look of skin vitality” (whatever that means).

Key ingredients: 5 types of rose stem cells. Stem cells are mother cells that can turn into any part of the organism they belong to. A rose stem cell can turn into a petal or leaf to repair the plant. But there’s no way it can turn into human skin and repair that! In skincare, stem cells are just glorified antioxidants.

What it does: It hydrates skin and has antioxidant properties that help you fight free radicals. Just close that lid quickly or air will flood in and deactivate the antioxidants!

Best for: Not a fan of this mask. It promises too much and delivers too little. If you’re curious to try it, it’s most suitable for dry skin.

Available at: Anthropologie, Beauty Bay, Cult Beauty, Sephora and Ulta

Related: The truth About Stem Cells In Skincare: Do They Really Work?

Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench Hyaluronic Micro-Bubbling Cloud Mask ($48.00)

What it is: A hyaluronic acid mask that deeply hydrates skin.

Key Ingredients: Hyaluronic acid is a moisture magnet that attracts and binds to the skin up to 1000 times its weight in water to deeply hydrate.

What it does: Very hydrating, it leaves skin softer and brighter. Unfortunately, it contains some natural extracts that can irritate sensitive skin. The bubbling action is supposed to have an oxygenating effect but the jury’s still out there on whether that’s good or bad for skin!

Best for: Not my fave PTR mask. But if you’re curious to try it, it’s suitable both for oily and dry skin that’s not sensitive.

Available at: Blue Mercury, Dermstore, Nordstrom, Sephora and Ulta

Related: What Is Hyaluronic Acid And Why Should You Use It?

Peter Thomas Roth Therapeutic Sulfur Mask ($47.00)

What it is: A clay mask with sulfur that fights acne.

Key Ingredients: Sulfur is an acne-fighter on steroids: it kills P Acnes, exfoliates dead skin cells away, regulates oil production and dries out blemishes. Problem is, it dries out skin, too! Kaolin and bentonite clays absorb excess oil to keep shine and pimples at bay.

What it does: Sulfur gets rid of pimples faster than anything else I’ve ever tried. Plus, the mask helps absorb excess oil and prevent pores from getting clogged. The catch? It can be very drying. I recommend you use it as a spot treatment only.

Best for: Acne-prone skin/

Available at: Dermstore, Revolve, Sephora and Ulta

A Routine to Glass Skin.

Glass skin — skin that appears like glass, poreless, luminous, translucent. We don’t mean that skin that you can literally see through (obviously), but skin that is so clear and radiant, it has that clear, glossy look of glass.

You might be thinking, That sounds impossible. I don’t have the time or money to do that.

Au contraire! To be sure, it would be nice if we could all get expensive facials and have the time for extensive, thorough routines, but we know — reality doesn’t always allow for that. However! That does not mean that glass skin is unattainable!

Glass skin is, essentially, healthy and hydrated skin; it’s about making sure your skin gets the nutrients and the hydration it needs to thrive. It’s about finding the products that work for you and your skin, that help keep your skin balanced, nourished, and, again, hydrated, and it’s about finding that routine that works for you — and sticking to it because consistency is key!

It doesn’t matter if you have a quick and easy routine or an intensive 10-step one — just make sure you’re doing it every day! Skincare is a marathon, and you’re sure to see the rewards of committing to a routine. If you’re intrigued but don’t know where to start, let us walk you through a sample routine!

Cleanse Thoroughly Every Day.

Even on your laziest days, cleanse your skin! Cleansing is one of the most essential steps because it dissolves away makeup and sweeps away excess sebum, grime, and other impurities that may have gathered on your skin during the day, helping prevent pores from clogging and gathering bacteria and other congestants. It’s key to keep cleansing gentle but thorough, so your skin is cleansed but not stripped dry, which can cause it to become dehydrated. We’re big proponents of the double cleanse, but we also love when products let us combine both steps in one, like the Eco Your Skin Oil-to-Foam Cleanser. The convenience (and gentleness and efficacy) makes it so much easier to commit to a routine!

Tone Skin to Help It Stay Balanced.

Toners help re-balance the pH level of skin after cleansing. Skin’s pH level lets you know how acidic or alkaline it is on a scale of 0 (totally acidic) to 14 (totally alkaline), and skin is considered balanced when its pH level is in the 4.5 to 5.5 range — so, slightly acidic, which allows for skin’s microbiome to thrive while fending off bad bacteria and harmful irritants. You can imagine why we stress the importance of keeping your skin balanced.

Cleansing can throw skin’s pH level off, and a toner helps “balance” it, which means bring it back into the happy range of 4.5 to 5.5. The Peach & Lily Good Acids Toner does exactly that, while also providing gentle exfoliation with a small amount of glycolic acid that’s effective and gentle enough for daily use, even for sensitive skin. The toner doesn’t just stop there, though; it also helps hydrate, soothe, and nourish skin, prepping skin for the products to follow.

Hydrate Skin With an Essence.

One of the primary characteristics of healthy skin is that it is sufficiently hydrated, and the primary task of an essence is to drench skin with hydration. Essences come with other secondary benefits, of course, like brightening or, in the case of the Atoclassic Real Tonic Soothing Origin Essence, soothing and helping calm irritation. With 14% hanbang ingredients, the Soothing Origin Essence help reduce redness and provide skin with the gentle, healing properties of hanbang ingredients and principles, while deeply hydrating skin.

Get a Boost of Nutrients With a Serum.

A serum is a treatment you can use to give your skin a boost and/or target specific skin concerns. It’s also a good way to make sure your skin is getting all the nutrients, hydration, and antioxidants it needs to thrive, which is exactly what the Peach & Lily Glass Skin Refining Serum was formulated to do. Packed with peach extract, madecassoside (derived from centella asiatica extract), peptides, niacinamide, and mountain yam extract, the Glass Skin Refining Serum is an easy way to glass skin!

Seal Everything In With a Moisturizer.

A moisturizer provides another layer of hydration to skin, and then it serves as the final step in a routine by sealing everything in. Moisturizers contains occlusives, which create a barrier on the surface of skin that helps slow down transepidermal water loss, so hydration and all the other ingredients you’ve just applied can stay in skin. That’s not all moisturizers do, though; they’re also another layer of nourishment and protection; so we recommend selecting one that is rich in beneficial ingredients.

The Peach & Lily Matcha Pudding Antioxidant Cream is packed full of matcha, one of the best sources of antioxidants, which help fight free radical damage caused by environmental stressors. The cream, which plays particularly well with the Glass Skin Refining Serum, also has cape lilac extract, niacinamide, and adenosine, which help brighten and firm skin.

Don’t Forget About the Eye Area.

The skin in your eye area is the thinnest and most fragile, and we like making sure it gets a little extra love. Eye creams are actually formulated to be lighter than moisturizers, so as to prevent overloading such thin, delicate skin, and different eye creams can target different concerns, from puffiness to fine lines to dark circles. We recommend the Aromatica Rose Absolute Eye Cream, which helps protect against visible signs of aging and dark circles, with a waterless formula made of an aloe base that’s been fortified with high-quality oils and plant-based extracts.

glass skin

And on those lazy days or those super demanding days or those days you just don’t have any spoons? It’s okay to pare things down, but we still recommend you cleanse, even if it’s just using a cleansing water (like Jungsaemmool’s Essential Cleansing Water Finisher) on a cotton pad to swipe all the makeup and grime off your skin. Follow that up with the Peach & Lily Lazy Day All-in-One Moisture Pads, which work as a toner-serum-moisturizer in one cotton pad, and finish with the Peach & Lily Glass Skin Refining Serum to make sure your skin gets all the vitamins, nutrients, and antioxidants it needs!

What I Use To Exfoliate My Body (It Works For Chicken Skin, Too)

ameliorate transforming body lotion reviewameliorate transforming body lotion review

When was the last time you exfoliated your body?

If you’re anything like me, you’re slathering your fave acid on your face every other day – heaven forbid those pesky dead cells roughen up your skin and steal its glow.

Your body? You even forget you have one. Hidden under layers of clothing for most of the year, you only realise how much you’ve neglected it when the first rays of spring shine through.

Now your skin feels thicker than it should. It’s roughed up in patches. A little dry, too. How do you fix this mess?!

Get yourself a lactic acid treatment, like Ameliorate Transforming Body Lotion. Here’s why:

P.S. It works for Kelatoris Pilaris, too.

Key Ingredients In Ameliorate Trasforming Body Lotion

Lactic Acid To Exfoliate Skin

Lactic acid is the gentlest member of the Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs), a family of exfoliants. It works by dissolving the glue that holds skin cells together. Once they slough off, your skin become softer, smoother and brighter.

Lactic acid goes the extra mile. It’s super hydrating: it attracts water from the air into the skin, increasing its moisture levels throughout the day.

This makes lactic acid the best exfoliant for very dry, sensitive skin. It’s so gentle, it exfoliates without irritations.

It’s also an effective treatment for kelatoris pilaris, a.k.a. chicken skin. It’s a hamrless but annoying condition that shows up as a scattered, patchy rash made up of very small red/tan bumps.

Unfortunately, there’s no cure. But exfoliating regularly with lactic acid can keep it under control. I say regularly because it can take weeks before you start to see results. Keep at it!

P.S. Lactic acid is the second ingredient in Ameliorate Transforming Body Lotion. That’s more than enough to do the job!

Related: Glycolic Acid VS Lactic Acid: Which One Should You Choose?

Sweet Almond Oil To Moisturise Skin

Out of all the oils out there, Ameliorate Transforming Body Lotion chose sweet almond oil as its base. Wonder why?

Sweet almond oil dries quickly. It has a lightweight texture that sinks fast into the skin without leaving a greasy residue behind.

Plus, it’s super moisturising. It creates a barrier on the skin that traps moisture in, helping skin stay soft and hydrated for hours.

Let’s Put It To The Test: Personal Use & Opinion

Ameliorate Transforming Body Lotion has a runny consistency that makes it a bit of a pain to apply. If you’re not careful, it can drip everywhere (trust me on this one).

It’s so lightweight, I doubted it was enough to tackle my very dry skin. I should’t have worried. I applied it in the morning after a shower and a few hours later my skin was still soft and smooth.

I like how gentle it is. Unlike scrubs, it doesn’t feel gritty or abrasive when I rub it on. It just smoothes out any bump and rough area without irritating skin or leaving a greasy residue behind. I can get dressed straight afterwards.

Granted, I don’t use it every day. The body may take more exfoliation than the face, but I’m never been a fan of overdoing it. A couple of times a week is the perfect balance for me.

That’s enough to remove the dead cells that accumulate on my body without destroying my skin’s protective barrier. The rest of the week, I slather on a richer moisturizing cream to quench my skin’s thirst.

I don’t have keratosis pilaris, so I can’t vouch for that. But if I did, I’d give it a try. Science says lactic acid helps, and there’s plenty of that here. Just don’t expect results overnight.

FYI, the cream smells… yoghurty. Kinda makes you wonder what the point of adding citrus oils was. They can irritate skin but hey they smell good. Heres, it’s the other way around. The scent didn’t irritate my skin, but didn’t wow me either.

Given how few exfoliating body lotions are out there, this ain’t a dealbreaker for me. Just thought I’d mention it in case it matters to you.

Hanbang Skincare, Where Traditional Meets Modern

If you grew up in Korea or in Korean diasporic communities around the globe, you may know about hanbang, traditional Korean medicine. You may have grown up going to the hanisa, a practitioner of traditional Korean medicine. You — or, let’s be honest, your parents — may have left with a concoction of herbal ingredients and instructions on how to cook them, instructions they followed to extract a dark-colored, bitter drink (aka hanyak) that filled your home with strong, acrid smells. You may have blown on the hot liquid furiously to cool it down, pinched your nose to block the smell, and chugged it, allowed to come up for air only when you’d emptied the cup. You may have demanded a sweet candy to help remove the bitter taste from your mouth.

If you didn’t grow up going to the hanisa and drinking hanyak, you may still have encountered hanbang in other ways. Hanbang, traditional Korean medicine, can include acupuncture, food, salt rooms in Korean, and, yes, even skincare.

What is hanbang?

Hanbang refers to traditional Korean medicine that treats the body using herbal ingredients and particular techniques, like fermentation. It’s a holistic approach to medicine, emphasizing the balance between mind and body and targeting the root causes behind ailments, instead of simply the ailment itself. Hanbang, to put it shortly, wants to treat all of you, not just one individual part.

In similar fashion, for something to be considered to be part of hanbang traditions, it’s not just about the ingredients used — hanbang ingredients, like ginger root or licorice root, are commonly used — but also about how the various ingredients are combined together and formulated. Hanbang itself is about the whole, not the individual parts.

What is hanbang skincare?

Hanbang skincare is rooted in this traditional Korean medicinal foundation, but it combines the traditional with more modern ingredients and technologies. It’s why you might also see ingredients like niacinamide, shea butter, and glycerin alongside these traditional ingredients; hanbang skincare is about maximizing efficacy while being faithful to hanbang principles.

That means that hanbang skincare is also more holistic — rather than target a specific concern, like acne or visible signs of aging, hanbang skincare seeks to treat skin as a whole. It treats the foundation of skin.

A great example of a hanbang skincare brand is Atoclassic, a skincare line from the Woobo clinic in Seoul. The Woobo clinic was founded in 1912 and is now in its third-generation of hanbang practice, and Atoclassic’s products are formulated with up to 14% hanbang ingredients, capturing the power of Korean traditional medicine to help calm, soothe, and heal skin. We particularly recommend the brand if your skin is feeling sensitive or irritated, though Atoclassic is suitable for all skin types and even for children and pregnant women (though you should always check with your doctor first).

Our favorite Atoclassic products are their Real Tonic Soothing Multi Cleanser and Real Tonic Soothing Origin Essence, which are both easy to incorporate into your daily routine. We also love the Real Tonic Soothing Moist Mist for those times skin needs some refreshing during the day, as well as the Real Tonic Perfect Treatment Mask on those days when skin just isn’t cooperating and needs a blast of goodness.

What are common hanbang ingredients?

Of course, you’ll also find a lot of these hanbang ingredients in skincare products that aren’t necessarily considered “hanbang skincare.” These products might use ingredients commonly found in hanbang in general, the most common of which are ginseng root extract and ginger root extract, but that’s where the connection ends. That doesn’t mean these products are not as good or as effective or as gentle as hanbang skincare; like so much out there, hanbang skincare is not inherently better than non-hanbang skincare.

Ingredients like ginseng root extract and ginger root extract are great even outside of traditional hanbang practices. Ginger root, for instance, is a medicinal plant that’s high in antioxidants, helps stimulate circulation and encourage cell turnover, and has antiseptic and antibacterial properties. Ginseng root helps firm skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and it helps balance sebum. Coptis root extract has natural anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-bacterial properties, helping calm skin and provide moisture. These are just three ingredients you’ll find that are also common ingredients in hanbang medicine!

Product recommendations: The Be the Skin Daily Complete Cleansing Oil is fortified with ginger root extract, Chinese cassia root, and great burnet root to help stimulate circulation and help skin appear more youthful. You’ll find licorice root extract, skullcap extract, and ginger root extract in the Peach & Lily Power Calm Hydrating Gel Cleanser, a gentle, soothing cleanser that hydrates skin and leaves it calm. These two cleansers, one oil-based, the other water-based, pair well together for a gentle, soothing double cleanse.

We hope that explains more about hanbang in skincare! Have any other questions? Leave them in the comments below!

Some New and Very Convenient Beauty Launches

CollectPlus Beauty Haul

Sponsored content – Online shopping has saved me from more than one crisis this week alone (dramatic, moi? never) but there is very little that is more frustrating than waiting in all day for a delivery? Well yes actually, it could be slightly worse. What if you miss said eagerly anticipated parcel (those new shoes don’t sign for themselves) due to work or other commitments? We’ve all been there. So to end time wasting, and to open yourself up to so many more merchants than perhaps your local high street, may I suggest you start utilising CollectPlus? It couldn’t be easier nor speedier and is every online shoppers dream.

As it stands there are several large retailers already making the most of the CollectPlus services such as: ASOS, Holland and Barrett, L’Occitane and many other high-street favourites; I personally tend to favour John Lewis when using CollectPlus as they carry all my favourite beauty brands, which helps make my day-to-day job that little easier. Basically using CollectPlus is much like an other online shopping experience, except you are in complete control of when you receive your goods. With CollectPlus you get to search for local pick up points close to you (be that at home, work or further afield), and collect your parcel when it is most convenient to your schedule – as most CollectPlus stores are open early until late, you have more choice than ever.

Basically CollectPlus in a nutshell is: you order via your favourite online retailer, select CollectPlus as your chosen method of delivery, enter your postcode and select a CollectPlus pick up point, pay and wait for your confirmation text to pick your goods up at your own disposal. Not only is it super speedy (I’m talking next day delivery rates here) but frankly it is so convenient.

CollectPlus Beauty Haul

Speaking of convenience, is your beauty routine where it needs to be? Does the products you reach for on a daily basis save you time or are they slightly hindering you? Do you need – or perhaps want – to cut a few corners? Well I’m guessing if you are reading this post, you are a fairly busy person? So for that reason I put my CollectPlus order to good use (I’m such a good egg) and curated a beautiful selection of everyday beauty essentials that are: easy to use, store and perhaps more importantly can be used in a multitude of ways. Say hello to a little longer in bed each day…

My first suggestion is pretty much anything from the Estée Lauder The New Oh Naturelle collection; the two palettes feature a broad spectrum of neutral shades that can be used as eyeshadow, eye liner, blush, contour, setting powder and highlighting options. Essentially if you muster up the courage (and of course funds) to purchase both of these beautiful palettes, you may never need to as much as look in the general direction of neutral make-up tones.

I also highly rate the accompanying Estée Lauder The New Oh Naturelle Paint-On Liquid Lip Colours because again they are so adaptable due to the spectrum of natural toned hues available. My personal favourite is Nude Tease; a deeper nude that is simply beautiful on the lips but due to its Matte finish it can easily be buffed into the cheeks and eyes to create a pretty, warm bronze glow.

Speaking of bronzer, the new Benefit Hoola Caramel Bronzer may just be my new favourite multi-tasker, not only is the warm, medium tone fairly adaptable to all skin tones but it just happens to be the prettiest eyeshadow too. The beauty of this product is that due to its matte and natural finish, it can pretty much be applied to anywhere on the face and body (great for disguising tan lines), not to mention it is one of those rare shades that doubles up as a contour too!

CollectPlus Beauty Haul

We all have favourite MAC products but I feel some are better than others (I’m sure that is the case with every brand) and the new launches often drown out the real stars of the show. If you don’t already own MAC Pro Longwear Paint Pot in Painterly, please stop what you are doing and grab your bank card. This clever cream product is not only a brilliant everyday eyeshadow but it can be used as a primer, concealer (as in to conceal the natural shade of the eye lid) and a nude eye liner to boot. I’d truly be lost without my little jar!

CollectPlus Beauty Haul

Admittedly the new MAC launches don’t always grab my attention but the new MAC Hyper Real Glow Highlighter Palette did make me stop dead in my tracks. There are four colour-ways to chose from (I’m this close to purchasing them) but I have personally found that the Shimmy Peach palette is the best multi-tasker of the bunch. The three bronze-come-peach tones look great on all complexions as Highlighter but can be used in place of blush and/or eyeshadow too.

My last utterly convenient beauty product that every make-up bag should possess is the Bobbi Brown Art Stick. These clever, chunky pencils can be used to line and fill the lips in one quick go but that’s not where the fun ends. Dependant on the shade you purchase, the Bobbi Brown Art Stick can be used on the eyes, cheeks and anywhere you can imagine. As it is a pencil it offers great control for precision application, I’ve lost count of how many shades I’ve bought over the years but my person favourite has to be Rich Nude. Try it you will be converted.

Is Ellagic Acid The New Alternative To Hydroquinone?

is ellagic acid an effective alternative to hydroquinoneis ellagic acid an effective alternative to hydroquinone

Have you heard? There’s a new skin-lightener on the block.

It’s called ellagic acid. Rumour has it, it’s as effective as hydroquinone sans the irritation. And it doubles up as an antioxidant, too!

Is it too good to be true? Here’s what the science says:

What The Heck Is Ellagic Acid?

Ellagic acid is a powerful antioxidant found in many fruits and vegs, including strawberries, pomegranate, grapes, and blackcurrants.

Plants make it to protect themselves from infections and pests. Women use it to keep both wrinkles and dark spots at bay.

How Does Ellagic Acid Benefit Skin?

Ellagic acid has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and skin-lightening properties that help repair sun damage:

1. Ellagic Acid Helps Treat Wrinkles

Like all antioxidants, ellagic acid helps treat wrinkles and protect skin from sun damage.

A 2010 study shows that ellagic acid prevents inflammation and collagen breakdown, two of the main causes of wrinkles.

In case you’re wondering, it works in two ways. First off, ellagic acid blocks the production of MMP (matrix metalloproteinase enzymes), enzymes that break down collagen. Block them and your collagen won’t degrade as fast.

Ellagic acid also reduces ICAM, a molecule that causes inflammation. Inflammation is responsible for premature wrinkles, dark spots, acne, rosacea… Any skin woe basically.

The catch? The study was done on rats. Not the same as human skin. Still, it shows promise.

2. Ellagic Acid Helps Reduce Dark Spots

Even more impressive, ellagic acid can lighten dark spots. You don’t even need that much of it. 0.5% will do the job! Really.

A 2013 study (done on humans this time!) compared a 0.5% ellagic cream with salicylic acid, 1.1% hydroxyphenoxy propionic acid, yeast extract to a prescription combination of 4% hydroquinone cream and 0.025% tretinoin cream applied every night for 12 weeks.

The results? Both creams reduced dark spots. But the ellagic acid cream did so without irritating skin. There was none of the peeling or redness that prescription formula left behind.

If your skin can’t take tretinoin, hydroquinone or other strong skin-lighteners, giving ellagic acid a go makes sense.

What Are The Best Products With Ellagic Acid?

The Bottom Line

Ellagic acid is a powerful antioxidant that’s showing promise as a skin-lightener. Initial research shows it works as well as hydroquinone and tretinoin – but without the drying side effects. If you have sensitive skin, it’s totally worth a go.
