#projectmakeupbag

By my very nature I am inquisitive (read nosy), particularly in regards to beauty products. I want to know what you use and why. Let me see the contents of your make-up bag in all its natural glory, let’s forget Instagram filters and pretty pink packaging. Show me what really works. Tell what you are loyal to and why. Give me your inside scoop, a behind the scenes glimpse into your life whatever your profession, budget or complexion needs may be…

Let me kick off #Projectmakeupbag…

If a product can leak, it will chose to do so in my bag – it seems to be some weird unwritten law, that or I am just entirely feckless. That’s why I personally gravitate towards the beautiful cotton pouches from Elizabeth Scarlett (you can find my exact one here) – it’ big, beautiful and worst case scenario it can be machine washed.

My everyday make-up bag serves two purposes:it contains all I need to tame my hair and oily skin throughout the day, yet provides all the essentials should I have to travel to a meeting in London at the last minute. As such everything is used at least once a day (even if that is just at home) and I like to think I have parred it back to the absolute essentials but I’ll let you be the judge of that.

#projectmakeupbag

Daily SPF you need it, there’s really no grey area when it comes to protecting your skin against UV rays as far as I am concerned. I do flip flop a lot between brands and formulations depending on my mood, budget and skin state. At the moment I am really enjoying Teoxane Advanced Protecting Shield SPF30; it’s lightly tinted, non-greasy and contains hyaluronic acid to help moisturise too. I have the full size bottle at home which I use to re-fill this little pump dispenser every so often.

#projectmakeupbag

I seldom apply base products straight from the tube, rather I tend to mix a few products together to create my own franken-foundation. At the moment I am using: The Ordinary Serum Foundation, YSL Touche Eclat Blur Primer, Collection Lasting Finish Lemon Colour Corrector and a little of Charlotte Tilbury Wonder Glow – if you look carefully you can see a few areas of the product in which I haven’t thoroughly mixed the products together. Yes, that is an old, mini glass Herborist Day Cream jar – it’s perfectly sized and seemed a savvy and environmentally sound decision at the time.

As someone with very oily skin it’s practically unheard of for me not to have some sort of setting powder on my person at all times. I can not recommend the Clarins Pore Perfecting Matifying Kit enough, it contains a lightweight blotting powder and set of paper blotting sheets so you can easily mop up excess shine on-the-go.

A few other "odd" things I do? I bundle my make-up brushes (Clinique Buff Brush, mini Laura Mercier Eye Crease Brush and It Cosmetics Heavenly Luxe French Botique Blush Brush) and  together using a hair-tie with a few hair-grips slid on so I always know where they are, and I stash my hoop earrings (never under estimate the power of a set of earrings) and any medicines that I may have inside my plaster box.

#projectmakeupbag

The reoccurring theme within my make-up bag is multi-tasking staples; if it can serve more than one purpose, chances are it will make it into my everyday beauty rotation.  I personally swear by Benefit Cosmetics mini’s – they last a deceivingly long time and often come free with magazines (but you didn’t hear that from me). I tend to lug around Benefit Hoola in mini form and use it both to contour my face and often as an eyeshadow. My other dinky essential is Benefit Benetint, a rose scented multi-purpose tint that creates the most perfect "bitten" red lip, that stays firmly in place all day long. My only other powder product is Essence Blushplay in 10 Play it Peach, again this serves a few purposes: blush, highlight and often eyeshadow too. I do tend to dab my brush into all three shades and apply as one product, rather than using each tone individually on my cheeks – I find this creates a really healthy and lifted glow.

#projectmakeupbag

In Winter (rain, snow and sleet) and Summer (heat and sweat) I rely on waterproof mascara formulations but for the rest of the year, I do tend to skip it and reach for something a little more gentle and easier to remove. Since it’s launch a few years ago, I have become heavily invested in Lancome Monsieur Big Mascara – sure it takes a little while to dry down to the perfect consistency but once it does, nothing else is all that comparable. Coincidentally in the Winter months, I do swap this out for the waterproof version.

I like big, bushy natural brows and for that gel formulations work best, I typically recommend Maybelline Brow Precise Fiber Filler. It fills, tames, plumps and holds the brows firmly in place, you can also add additional layers of product hours down the line for a more dramatic look and it doesn’t flake – the flat brush is also pretty nifty for creating a fluffy brow look.

#projectmakeupbag

MAC Angel Lipstick has been my go-to pink/nude for longer than I have been blogging, admittedly it isn’t for everyone but it works well with my complexion and pairs well with natural-ish make-up. Over the years I have learnt to spice it up a little with a deeper lip liner, which currently comes in the form of Kiko Sweetheart Lip Pencil in Shade 01 – super cheap but long-wearing and very creamy. I always cart around at least one lip balm and at the moment, I have been favouring Nivea Hydro Care Lip Balm – it has a lovely, almost velvet like finish so it is ideal for under any other lip product and yet it does offer substantial moisture. On occasion I will apply this over a lip liner to create a comfortable lip stain.

Now over to you #projectmakeupbag

Her Skincare Secrets: An Interview With Gloria and Victoria, Founders Of Chemist Confessions

interview gloria victoria founders of chemist confessions

If you’re on Instagram and haven’t heard of Chemist Confessions, you must be living under a rock.

Started by beauty myth busters Victoria and Gloria, the quirky Instagram account decodes the ingredient lists of your fave products, debunks common skincare misconceptions and marketing nonsense, and gives honest skincare reviews – all with the help of cute graphic that makes skincare science fun and easy to understand.

It all started when Victoria and Gloria were working as chemists for L’Oreal. As much as they loved creating products that fixed people’s skincare woes, they soon grew frustrated by the lack of transparency and hyped up marketing claims in the industry.

That’s when they decided to fly solo and create their own skincare brand, Chemist Confessions. Going back to basics, the line features 4 moisturisers in all kinds of textures – from oils to watery gels – to suit every skin type. Because retinol & co are important, but without a proper foundation, they won’t give you the results you crave.

In this interview, Victoria and Gloria share their own skincare secrets. Read on to find out more about their skincare routines and what products/habits are keeping their skin in top shape:

1. When did you become interested in skincare?

Victoria: I probably became interested once I started having acne. So probably around 12 years old. Nothing makes you more motivated to have a skincare routine then trying to fight pimples and my routine back then was awful. I did everything to to dry it out, cleansers, astringents, 10% BPO, and no moisturizer for fear of making the breaking out worse. I also tried all sorts of OTC products from antibiotics to retinoids. Actually struggling with acne for a decade and dealing with the growing pains that come with that, motivated me to do research in the field during college.

Gloria:  My skin has always been on the dry side, which means I was mostly spared of acne issues in my teenage years. But college hit me hard. The long nights studying, the extreme cold weather, the not so great eating habits all took a toll on my skin. I was seeing fine lines popping up prematurely compared to my peers. That’s when I started a cycle of blindly buying a bunch of products and developed an avid interest in skincare.

2. What’s your skincare routine like?

Victoria: Currently with the colder weather my routine in the morning is Aquafix water gel and Mr. Reliable moisturizer plus an SPF 50. At night, I wash my face and then do the same routine of Aquafix and Mr. Reliable combo. Other things that get inserted are AHA/retinol treatments (twice a month) and sheet masks whenever I just want to take it easy.

Gloria: My skincare routine is:

Day: Aquafix – home concoction of CE Ferulic serum – the better oilla roche posay anthelios sunscreen

Night: Cleanser (changes depending on what I’m testing) – Aquafix – AHA (product changes depends on what I’m testing out) – the Better oildab Balm Voyage on trouble spots ( mostly my ‘mustache zone’ which tends to be drier and more flake prone than other parts)

3. If you could only use three skincare products for the rest of your life, what would they be?

Victoria: Moisturizer, Sunscreen, Cleanser. I think with that trio, you’ve covered about 99% of the core skincare upkeep.

Gloria: Cleanse – moisturize – sun protection … though its cruel to limit to one per category, this is the holy trinity of skincare

4. What are your fave skincare brands and why?

Victoria: Ours! ( just a dash of bias haha!). But La Roche Posay and CeraVe would probably be my favorite. La Roche Posay has all sorts of sunscreen textures so it’s a great go to brand to find the right texture and SPF level that works for your skin. CeraVe’s hydrating cleanser and lotions are always a reliable starting point.

Gloria: Other than ourselves? I’m a fan of skinceuticals’ work in active skincare. Paula’s Choice also has some great reliable options. Texture wise I love my Japanese skincare like Hada Labo and Kose!

victoria gloria chemist confessions founders

5. What are your top 3 skincare tips to take care of your skin?

Victoria: My top 3 skincare tips are:

  1. Cop out tip but wear sunscreen!
  2. Keep the routine manageable to stay consistent. A simple routine that you can stick to is better than trying to stack in 15 layer routine. You ultimately get a better understanding of your skin and develop good habits that fit your lifestyle.
  3. Patience! When skin has its bad days, it’s easy to want to nuke your face with all sorts of high powered actives. Instead, introduce one or two new actives to help your skin out and stick with it. It’s much easier for your skin to adapt to one or two than 20, especially since it’s already not doing too great.

Gloria: My top 3 skincare tips are:

  1. Solidify your core cleanse – moisturize – sun protection routine first. Finding reliable products that you can always fall back on in these 3 categories is key to long term skincare success. We get that trying new, sexy products that promises your the moon is tempting (guilty!), but knowing who your workhorses are pays off in the long run. With skincare, consistency in these 3 categories is key.
  2. Listen to your skin. There’s a lot of fear mongering out there. You might have a cream that’s served you great for years… then see an article on how the dimethicone in this cream is actually destroying your skin then be tempted to throw it out. If it works for you, stick to it!
  3. Know your active holy grail. There are a few tried-and-true ingredients in skincare: AHA, retinol, vitamin C, niacinamide, etc to name a few. You don’t necessarily need to cram all of them into your routine, but strategically incorporating one or 2 of them in your routine long term could be a game changer.

6. What skincare treatments do you regularly have done?

Victoria: None at the moment but we recently got to work with and learn from a master aesthetician. After the lesson, I really want to try a few micro needling sessions. Mainly because it’s relatively painless, the healing time is minimal, and the results look pretty enticing.

Gloria: I haven’t been able to get any regular treatments for a long time now with Chemist Confessions keeping our work schedule hectic. I used to love getting a dermabrasion + peel combo done once a month or so.

7. What lifestyle habits do you have that keep your skin in top shape?

Victoria: I don’t think I’m actually achieving these but my main goals are exercise and sleep. Work gets in the way sometimes,  but just getting quality sleep and a little exercise definitely elevates my mood and attention span during the day so it’s something I aim for.

Gloria: Sleep! This could be really difficult when we’re traveling to all sorts of different time zones and climates for work. But I make sure I go everywhere with my eye mask + melatonin gummy. Good quality sleep is the difference maker.

8. What’s in your makeup bag?

Victoria: Balm voyage, eyeliner (Kiss Me Heroine), eyebrow pencil (Missha), liquid foundation (Giorgio Armani), and Bite Beauty’s Chai. Also a travel size roller ball of miumiu’s leau bleu! Love that scent!

Gloria: Liquid Eyeliner (Kiss Me Heroine), mascara (kiss me heroine long & curl), lash curler, Benefit Give Me Brow, a MUFE neutral eyeshadow palette, a few lipsticks (Bite and Hourglass are my favorite ATM!)

Thank you, Victoria and Gloria!

Don’t forget to check out their website and skincare range at Chemist Confessions. You can also keep up with Victoria and Gloria on Facebook and Instagram.

The Backside of Blogging – a Roundtable Discussion

"Bloggers (and vloggers) are a special breed and live enchanted lives. They are surrounded by thousands of loving followers, get free-flowing funds from eager sponsors, and enjoy oodles and oodles of freebies and goodies from every spot on the planet. In short, every blogger has it made".

Or so some seem to think.

From a readers point of view, I can see how the life of a blogger could appear a bit on the glamorous side, but there isn’t a single blogger or vlogger I know who experiences it like that.

There are some less fortunate sides to ‘putting yourself out there’ that aren’t made public and may only be mentioned privately in the company of close friends.

That’s what we’re looking at today.

Are Emile Cordon Miracle Lip Balms Worth The Splurge?

emile cordon miracle lip balms 01

If 10 years ago you’d told me I’d be happy to pay $42.00 for a lip balm, I would have said you’re flipping mad. No lip balm is worth that much!

But Emile Cordon Cashmere-On Lip Pot is NOT a lip balm. It’s an experience. Everything, from the silky smooth texture to the glossy glass packaging screams luxury. The attention to the smallest detail is out of this world.

Sure, it’s not something you’d use every day. It’s a little pampering luxury you get when you want to treat yourself for a job well done, a milestone reached or… just for the sake of it. Cos, why not?

Now Emile Cordon is taking it to the next level. Their new range, Miracle Lip Balms, dresses your lips in both shine and colour. The best part? You can use them on the cheeks, too.

The Miracle Lip Balms go the extra mile – and the price reflects that. Are they worth it? I’ve put three shades to the test to find out:

The Colours

Emile Cordon kindly sent me 3 shades for review (and I plan to repurchase a couple myself when I run out – I love them that much):

  • Chic Chic Boom: A soft, neutral brown shade with a strong vanilla scent. You can use it both on lips and cheeks. I use it only on the lips, because I don’t like wearing brown on my cheeks. But it’s just personal preference.
  • Moroccan Mint: Don’t let the green colour scare you. This baby applies clear on the lips. But it has a lovely minty scent and flavour. I use it all the time when I’m at home and don’t feel the need for colour.
  • Powdered Rose: My fave of the lot, it’s a sheer but buildable warm-toned pink with coral undertones and a soft, vanilla rose scent. I use it often both on cheeks and lips when I run for errands but want to look well put together.

Chic Chic Boom and Powdered Rose are really sheer. One coat will give you lots of shine with the tiniest hint of colour. Two/three coats turn up the intensity of the shade, but you’ll never get full coverage.

I like that. I have fair skin, so sometimes a sheer gloss of colour on the cheeks is just what I need. 🙂

The Formula

Emile Cordon Miracle Lip Balms are a blend of natural oils and waxes. The waxes give the lip balm their shape – without the stickiness.

The formula is thick, so you do feel like you’re wearing lip balm, but it doesn’t feel sticky or uncomfortable.

The natural oils – castor and olive oils – are moisturising and keep your lips soft and smooth.

The Packaging

It pains me to say this, but the package is the only think I don’t like (much) about Emile Cordon Miracle Lip Balms.

The Original Cashmere-On Lip Pot has a stunning glass packaging with a gold lid. So. Luxurious.

The Miracle Lip Balm come in plastic pots with a black lid. Cute but not as luxurious. It also cracks more easily, like I found out when I accidentally dropped one of the lip balms on the floor. Ugh.

I do wish they had kept the original packaging (especially since these cost more. Ahem).

P.S. Emile Cordon Miracle Lip Balm come with a handy spatula, so you don’t need to put your finger in the jar to apply them.

The Performance

When I first met Emile Cordon lip balms, my lips were in perfect condition. I’m a lip balm junkie, so they always get all the TLC they need.

These days, things are different. I’ve started wearing braces at the end of January and oh my, does the damn thing rub against my lips! If I forget to put wax on braces, my lips get all chapped.

Enter Emile Cordon Miracle Lip Balms. They feel very moisturising on the lips, soothe them and help them heal more quickly. Phew!

The best part? I don’t feel the need to reapply them every two hours. Sure, the colour is gone after that. The balms are glossy, so the colour won’t hold onto your cheeks and lips for long.

But the moisture? That stays on for hours on end.

The Foundation that Moisturises and Exfoliates For You

Clinique Even Better Refresh Hydrating Repairing Makeup

Sadly it doesn’t take the bins out nor does it do the dishes.

Clinique Even Better Refresh Hydrating Repairing Makeup

Foundation is a fickle mistress, especially when you have combination skin. No scrap that, especially when you have skin anything other than a "normal" complexion – what is "normal skin" anyway? Normal to me is looking less than radiant and akin to heavy slog in the local chippy, in which I have used my face to blot up any excess oil. And yet normal to you might be a complexion drier than the Sahara desert. I won’t pretend for one moment that there’s a suit-all solution out there but the latest Clinique launch – Clinique Even Better Refresh Hydrating and Repairing Makeup (foundation to us mere mortals) is pretty darn close.

Clinique Even Better Refresh Hydrating Repairing Makeup

Everything I like about a foundation, Clinique Even Better Refresh Hydrating and Repairing Makeup offers from the get-go, including an easy to use squeeze-style bottle. If like myself you never actually get around to picking up a pump for your beloved favourite bases (looking at you NARS Sheer Glow), or simply hate glass bottles for whatever reason, this should be your favourite type of packaging. I personally find this style of bottle travels better and you can also cut the tube up to scrape every little drop out – it’s 2019, we waste nothing. The downside? Forget to pop the lid back on and let’s just say you’ll ruin any surface that the rogue liquid comes into contact with.

Clinique Even Better Refresh Hydrating Repairing Makeup

Odes to convenient packaging aside, the new Clinique Even Better Refresh Hydrating and Repairing Makeup’s real selling point is the formulation and expansive shade range (27 hues in total) covering light, medium and deep skin tones, all of which come in various undertones such as warm, cool and neutral. In my experience, Clinique foundations do veer a little on the deep side so I would advise getting colour-matched at your local counter.

Clinique Even Better Refresh Hydrating Repairing Makeup
Clinique Even Better Refresh Hydrating Repairing Makeup
Clinique Even Better Refresh Hydrating Repairing Makeup

If like myself you don’t particularly enjoy the sensation of heavy make-up and yet you require something a little more than a tinted moisturiser, Clinique Even Better Refresh Hydrating and Repairing Makeup is the answer. It is nourishing, and as the name suggests hydrating but not so much that it is overly rich and thus being problematic to oily complexions; rather it feels like a great gel based moisturiser. The beauty of the lightweight texture is that allows the skin to breathe, and yet it can be applied in layers, should you need more coverage than its default veil of a light to medium base. As this is slightly creamier than most foundations, I do recommend setting this product with a setting Powder and/or make-up setting spray to prolong wear, especially if you do have oily to combination skin.

Clinique Even Better Refresh Hydrating Repairing Makeup

My train of thought recently in regards to make-up is that if it is going to be on my face for several hours on end, it may as well do something beneficial – and this is what sets the Clinique Even Better Refresh Hydrating and Repairing Makeup aside from the rest. The latest Clinique launch contains hyaluronic acid to help to moisturise and of course plump the skin. It also contains potent peptides (not individually named) to keep skin the smooth and create a naturally flawless surface, but perhaps most significantly of all, it contains salicylic acid to gently re-texture the complexion. Due to the latter ingredient, please couple this base product with a daily facial SPF to avoid sun damage to the complexion.

So essentially Clinique Even Better Refresh Hydrating and Repairing Makeup not only provides an easy to wear, comfortable everyday base but it also gently moisturisers your skin and gently exfoliates too. Make-up just got upgraded and if you are half as lazy as I am when it comes to exfoliating, you owe it to yourself to try this out.

Fave Five: The Best Of Sunday Riley

best sunday riley skincare products

My, is Sunday Riley having a bad year.

The brand quickly gained a cult following for making products that mix powerful, science-backed actives with natural extracts to give you the best of both worlds.

Then came the fake review scandal. The product reformulations. Messing with cult faves is never a good idea, even when the law demands it (Good Genes was reformulated to comply with new EU regulations). And don’t get me started on the Ceramic Slip Cleanser. Is there a more hated product on the internet? *sighs*

Is Sunday Riley still worth the splurge? Yes and no. Like every other brand, it’s hit and miss. Here are the hits, the best Sunday Riley skincare products:

sunday riley best products

Juno Antioxidant + Superfood Face Oil ($36-$72.00)

I’m not a big fan of single oil products. I mean, why settle for one oil when a bunch works better? Sunday Riley must think the same. Juno Antioxidant + Superfood Face Oil contains a bunch of non-fragrant oils with moisturizing and antioxidant properties to fight wrinkles and dryness at the same time. The only catch? It takes a while to sink in and doesn’t play well under makeup. Use it at night oil.

P.S. Oils are for dry skin. If yours oily, you do NOT need this.

Available at: Cult Beauty, Dermstore, Nordstrom,Revolve and Sephora

Related: The Complete Guide To Facial Oils

A+ High-Dose Retinoid Serum ($85.00)

You’ve probably heard that Sunday Riley A+ High-Dose Retinoid Serum contains a whopping 6.5% retinoids. Truth bomb: it’s NOT as impressive as it sounds. 5% of that is hydroxypinacolone retinoate (what The Ordinary calls Granactive Retinoid). Brands swear it’s more powerful than retinol… but I have yet to see proof of it. 0.5% is an algae said to act like retinol. The remaining 1% is an encapsulated retinol BLEND – not retinol alone. Retinol is the real deal, the form of retinoid scientifically proven to reduce wrinkles and boost collagen – and there’s not much of it here. Still, retinol works even at incredibly small concentrations, so if you’re just starting your retinol journey, this is a good option. It’s also packed with moisturising ingredients to counteract its drying effect.

P.S. If you’ve already graduated to higher doses of retinol (1%>) or are using retinal (retinaldehyde), it doesn’t make sense to switch to this.

Available at: Cult Beauty and Sephora

Related: What’s The Best Form Of Retinoid For You?

Good Genes All-In-One Glycolic/Lactic Acid Treatment ($105.00)

The original Sunday Riley Good Genes All-In-One Lactic Acid Treatment used lactic acid. It’s a gentle exfoliating acid that dissolves the glue that holds skin cells together, so they can slough off and reveal the brighter, more even-toned skin underneath. Lactic acid is so gentle, even sensitive skin can use it. That’s why we were all gutted when the EU told Sunday Riley to reformulate it with glycolic acid. It’s a harsher exfoliant, so not everyone can tolerate it. I now recommend it only to dry skin that’s not overly sensitive or prone to redness.

P.S. You can still find the original version in the US. 😉

Available at: Anthropologie, Cult Beauty, Dermstore, Free People and Sephora

Related: Glycolic Acid VS Lactic Acid: Which One Is Right For You?

Saturn Sulfur Acne Treatment Mask ($55.00)

Sulfur is my fave spot treatment for pimples. It kills them faster than anything else I’ve ever tried. The catch? It’s so harsh and drying on the skin. That’s why I don’t recommend using Sunday Riley Saturn Sulfur Acne Treatment Mask all over your face – especially on CLEAR areas. Use it only when spots start to pop up, so they get the message they’re not welcome here, pronto! Bonus points: the mask has 1.5% salicylic acid, an exfoliant that gets inside the pores, removing all the gunk that’s clogging them up and giving you breakouts in the first place. Bye bye, pimples!

Available at: Anthropologie,Dermstore, Free People, Revolve and Sephora

Related: Sulfur: Good For Acne, Bad For Skin?

Ceramic Slip Cleanser ($35.00)

I know, I know. A lot of you hate the new formula. I totally get it: Sunday Riley Ceramic Slip Cleanser used to be a heavy duty, foaming cleanser for oily skin. Now it’s more of a gentle, milky cleanser for dry skin. The old fans will leave in droves. But I like this new version more. It’s gentle and not as drying as the original. FYI, harsh cleansers only lead to more oiliness and acne in the long run. The real con? It doesn’t remove heavy makeup well.

Available at: Cult Beauty, Dermstore, Revolve,Sephora and SpaceNK
