6 Anti-Ageing Skin Myths Exposed

If you look up the Internet, you will come across hundreds of articles on anti-ageing—and most of them are spreading big, fat lies to which many of the readers fall prey. In this article, we have taken it upon ourselves to help you identify certain anti-ageing myths which should be totally debunked.

Here is a list of 6 of them:

6 Anti-Ageing Skin Myths Exposed

1. Petroleum Jelly Does Away With Wrinkles

Petroleum jelly is useful and offers many advantages, but anti-ageing properties are definitely not one of them. However, people believe in this myth so badly that almost everywhere you will find people recommending petroleum jelly.

So, go ahead, plunge your face in a bowl of petroleum jelly and you will still have those wrinkles on your face.

2. If It Works On Them, It Will Work On Me

Here we are talking about our attitude towards personal care. We are under a misconception that what works marvel tosomeone else will offer similar benefits to us. Well, hate to break it to you, but such attitude will not lead you anywhere.

The point is to understand that every skin needs different treatment—and if you blindly follow any skincare treatment without assessing your own skin, you will run into big troubles.

3. Pain Equals Work ability

If somebody tells you that skincare treatment is necessarily painful, then you must immediately dispose of what you just heard. Skin care treatment need not be painful. If you apply certain anti-ageing treatment to your skin and the treatment results in burns or stings, then it is time you realised that you are doing things the wrong way.

Any treatment which causes stinging skin or pain will aggravate ageing of the skin, and therefore, you need to consult a specialist before opting for any such treatment.

4. SPF Only On Bright, Sunny Days

Nothing could be farther from the truth. We all know the harm caused to our skin by UV Rays, and this makes it all the more important to keep SPF near. To guard your skin against dangerous UV rays, you should wear a wide range of SPF every day, even on cloudy days.

5. Ageing Is Genetic

Genes do play a role in matters concerning ageing, but there are a plethora of external factors which also accelerate the whole ageing process. For instance, pollution is the biggest factor working against the youthfulness of your skin. Similarly, UV rays are very harmful to your skin. So, you cannot absolutely blame your genes for an ageing skin.

6. Diet Has Nothing To Do With Ageing

Well, this is a big NO-NO. Diet has many implications on the rate at which our skin ages. Those who consume junk foods in greater quantities are more susceptible to theageing skin than those with a healthy diet.

Aveeno Skin Relief Moisturising Lotion With Shea Butter Can Soothe Extra Dry & Sensitive Skin (But Not Thanks To Shea Butter)

aveeno skin relief moisturising lotion with shea butter

“Where have you been all my life?! I SO needed you in my teens.”

That’s the first thing that popped into my head when I tried Aveeno Skin Relief Moisturising Lotion With Shea Butter.

Back then, I was so obsessed with makeup and skincare (for my face), I’d totally forget I had a body to take care of, too.

I’d literally jump out of a boiling hot bathtub, towel myself dry and put on clothes. It never occurred to me that I needed a body cream. Duh!

It’s not like my skin didn’t try to tell me. It was as parched as the Sahara. Itchy like a bug bite. Heck, I think once it even cracked.

That was my wake up call. It’d be a few years before I started moisturizing my body every single day, but from that point on, I did bother slathering on a body cream a couple of times a week. What can I say? Lazy habits die hard.

I don’t remember which body cream I used back then. But I know this: had I had Aveeno Skin Relief Moisturizing Lotion With Shea Butter, my skin would have healed sooner. Here’s why:

Key Ingredients In Aveeno Skin Relief Moisturising Lotion With Shea Butter

Petrolatum

Shea butter may get all the credit, but it’s petrolatum that does the moisturising job. It’s in 4th position, whereas shea butter is at the bottom of the list. Bummer!

So why did Aveeno Skin Relief Moisturising Lotion With Shea Butter chose to go with petrolatum instead? Surely, that’s the devil?!

Not so fast. Just because an ingredient is derived from oil, it doesn’t make it bad for you. Petrolatum undergoes a strict purifying process that strips it of anything toxic and carcinogenic. The end result is a molecule so safe and gentle, even the most sensitive of skin types can use it.

Petrolatum is a skin protectant. It’s a fancy way of saying it creates a barrier on the skin that keeps moisture in, so skin stays hydrated for longer.

This barrier has another important job: it protects dry and sensitive skin from harsh weather, pollution, irritating skincare products and anything else your skin comes in contact with on a daily basis.

Cos your skin won’t heal as fast if it keeps getting injured on a daily basis!

Oats

Oats are Aveeno’s secret weapon. I’m not kidding. This breakfast staple is just what the doctor ordered for dry, sensitive and itchy skin. Here’s why:

  1. It’s soothing: oats have anti-inflammatory properties that calm down irritations, sunburns, rashes, hives, eczema, psoriasis… you name it, it soothes it.
  2. It makes skin stronger: oats strengthen your skin’s protective barrier, so your skin stays well hydrated (no more moisture loss, yay!).
  3. It prevents wrinkles: oats are full of antioxidants, like vitamin E, ferulic acid and caffeic acid. They fight free radicals, so they don’t give you wrinkles.
  4. It’s gentle: pretty much everyone can tolerate oats. If it’s good for kids and eczema sufferers, it’s good for you, too.

Aveeno Skin Relief Moisturising Lotion With Shea Butter contains 3 types of oats – Avena Sativa Kernel Flour, Avena Sativa Kernel Extract and Avena Sativa Kernel Oil – for triple the benefits. Yay!

Glycerin

I’m sure you’re tired of seeing glycerin in ALL your skincare products. But there’s a reason why it’s always there.

Glycerin is a moisture magnet. It attracts water – both from the air and the deepest layers of your skin – and dumps it into the superficial layers of your skin.

The extra moisture plumps up fine lines and wrinkles, makes skin softer and smoother, and gives the complexion a dewy glow.

Let’s Put It To The Test: Personal Use & Opinion

Aveeno Skin Relief Moisturising Lotion With Shea Butter has a rich texture that sinks immediately. Ok, it wouldn’t sink immediately into oily skin. But the dry, sensitive, itchy skin this is made for? It soaks it up in a few seconds.

The skin of my body is on the dry side. Sure, it’s not as bad as it was in my teens (I do take much better care of it now!), but that’s just it’s natural skin type, I guess.

Usually, I treat it with body butters. Anything with the word “lotion” in the name makes me run in the opposite direction. 9 times out of 10, they’re not moisturizing enough.

Aveeno Skin Relief Moisturising Lotion With Shea Butter is the exception. It’s so moisturizing, it leaves my skin soft and smooth from morning till evening. No need to touch up during the day.

The best part? It doesn’t leave a greasy residue behind. I can slather it on and get dressed straight away.

If you’ve tried everything to soothe your sensitive, dry, itchy skin, do give this a go. It doesn’t have the fanciest packaging or the loveliest scent (good cos scent = irritation), but those oats do pack a soothing punch!

The Myths of “Medical-Grade” Skincare

Medical Grade SkincareThere’s a lot of misinformation about how “medical grade”, “clinical” or “professional” skincare products are guaranteed to be better than drugstore or “over-the-counter” (OTC) products you can buy at the supermarket. Like a lot of other myths, this myth has mostly been promoted by some well-intentioned people who have unfortunately been fed the wrong information by…

Spring is almost here.

It’s coming; we can feel it in the air.

Spring.

Daylight savings has brought us more daylight, so we’re not necessarily leaving work in darkness, giving us extra light to enjoy our waking hours. The cold is on its way out, taking its accompanying dryness with it, and there’s starting to be more moisture in the air. Flower buds are showing on trees and bushes.

The official start to spring is still a week away, but, because the weather has been sunny and almost spring-y here in New York, we’ve of course been thinking about transitioning our skincare from winter to spring. We don’t think we’re quite at the point where we can start swapping out products because there are still cold spells hitting us, but we thought we’d at least start thinking spring.

And how better to do that than by thinking of products that make us think of spring when we’re using them?

Even in warmer, not-as-dry weather, cleansing should still be gentle.

Cleansing should always be gentle no matter the weather. The Peach & Lily Power Calm Hydrating Gel Cleanser has chamomile and camellia extracts that soothe and calm skin while cleansing away impurities and dirt and even light makeup. With the light, natural, slightly herbal scent of chamomile and the brighter notes of camellia, the cleanser helps calm your mood as you cleanse your face, hopefully leaving you feeling as good as your skin feels.

Exfoliate! Dead skin still needs sloughing away in warmer months.

Clear away that dull, winter skin! To embrace spring fully, try out Femmue’s Flower Infused Fine Peel. Exfoliation is provided by finely ground camellia flowers, and the wash-off mask is filled with other hydrating, soothing ingredients like aloe extract, hyaluronic acid, and centella asiatica extract to leave your skin feeling soft and rejuvenated. The natural, bright scent of flowers is also sure to brighten your mood as you gently massage this mask over your skin and slough away roughness.

Continue to balance and hydrate skin.

Just because there is more moisture in the air doesn’t mean you should stop focusing on hydrating your skin! May Coop’s Raw Sauce is a particularly great toner/essence to balance your skin after cleansing and drench it with hydration. Slightly thicker in texture, the Raw Sauce is a waterless toner/essence, made up of 93% acer mono syrup, which also brings its pleasantly sweet but not overbearing scent to the formula.

The Raw Sauce is particularly appropriate for spring because the acer mono syrup used in this Raw Sauce is harvested in May!

Keep protecting your skin from environmental stressors.

The Ariul Berry Vital Daily Defense Serum is 20% chokeberry extract, and chokeberries are rich in antioxidants and vitamins. Boosted with hydrating and nourishing ingredients like glycerin, centella asiatica extract, allantoin, and various other berry extracts, this serum helps fight free radical damage and provides a defense against environmental stressors. It has a bright berry scent and a creamy gel texture that just melts into skin, leaving a smooth, bouncy finish.

Sheet mask!

You’re not surprised to hear us say this, of course. These Ice Cream Sheet Masks from Peach Slices feature berry extracts and milk protein extracts to help soften and nourish skin, while providing skin with antioxidants and beneficial ingredients like licorice root extract, ginger root extract, and green tea leaf extract to help nourish, brighten, and soothe skin. The bright berry scents are naturally provided by the ingredients and are sure to help perk you up as your skin is replenished and hydrated.

How to: Go Green Face Cleanser

Going green has become an expression in later years, but what does it mean? It means a whole lot of things!

Depending on who you talk to, it can be:

  • consciously behaving in as planet-friendly a manner as possible
  • being environmentally conscious with every purchase
  • preferring minimally processed products/ingredients
  • choosing plant-based over petrochemical based
  • trying to live as sustainably as possible in all aspects of ones life
  • considering carbon footprint
  • shopping locally and supporting smaller businesses

I could probably go on for a while, but I think you get the drift.

Having been a self-proclaimed ‘greenie’ for as long as I can remember, adapting all these new additions to the definition of being green has been right up my alley.

Today, we’re taking concept of going green right up to the maximum limit and making a green face cleanser that doubles as a mask.

Putting Self Preservation to the Ultimate Test

This is (yet another) adaptation of a self-preserving formula developed by my colleague in Formulators Kitchen that I have been head over heels in love with ever since I tried it the first time in early 2016.

The original product includes raw honey – a difficult ‘customer’ to add to cosmetics formulations – particularly if you want to work preservative free.

I’ve been putting the concept to the test in numerous ways for just about 3 years now. And no matter what I throw at it, it keeps on performing.

Hurdle Technology: The New Norm For Cosmetics Preservation

Ever since I started writing about my fascination with this subject, my research of it, and applying this method to my own formulations, an increasing number of you have asked me about Hurdle Technology. The whole idea of preserving cosmetics without using traditional preservatives is indeed a bit mind blowing.

Is it even possible?
Can be trusted?
Does it work?
If it really does work, then why isn’t everyone using it?

Today, I’m going to do my best to answer your questions and maybe even provide a little food for thought (there’s a pun in there you’ll totally get if you read on)

How to: Blackberry Exfoliating Hand Polish

Have you been infusing dried blackberries in oil lately?

Excellent!

Have you also been wondering what to do with the blackberries after you strained the oil? Well, here’s a suggestion: make a fabulous blackberry hand polish (that you may also want to try out as an exfoliating body scrub too).

Not only do dried blackberries function well as exfoliating nuggets, they will soften fairly quickly as they get wet so are not very likely to clog your drain and cause wailing and gnashing of teeth by plumbing-concerned family members (not that I know anyone who fits that description or anything).

And – they make your hand polish look all kinds of pretty!
