5 Make-Up Tips For Women With Dark Skin

Every skin type has different requirements, and there is no type better than others. Thus, we need to give special attention to our skin type to reap maximum benefits from the treatment and ensure a glowing and healthy skin.

Make-up is a common way of embellishing one’s skin; however, one should not go overboard with it and must be reasonable about the same. This is especially necessary for women with dark skin. Women with dark skin tones must be extra careful about putting on makeup because it can cause a big difference in the appearance.

We have 5 makeup tips to offer to such ladies to ensure that they get the perfect makeup for their perfect skin tone.

5 Make-Up Tips For Women With Dark Skin

1. Moisturising The Skin

You cannot miss out on this activity before applying make-up. Women with dark skin tone usually go through dryness issues which cause their skin to appear ashy. Hence, moisturizing the skin regularly retains the moisture in the skin and prevents or fades away the ashy look.

Apply a good quality moisturizer after your everyday shower to have your face and body properly hydrated for the day.

2. Sunscreen

It is a common misconception that women with dark skin tones do not need to apply sunscreen—in fact, it is kind of racist. Just because your complexion is dark does not mean your skin is not vulnerable to the dangers posed by the UV rays.

Do some study on your skin type, hit the market and purchase a good sunscreen, and apply it on a regular basis to offer a much-needed protection to your skin.

3. Choosing The Right Foundation

We need to get the base of our makeup right, and hence, a good foundation is the need of the hour. Whenever you are shopping for a foundation, keep in mind that the foundation should match your skin tone. You might want to use two shades of the foundation for example, by using a lighter shade around the center of the face and the natural shade on the remaining area of the face.

The right foundation does not only sit well on your face but also does away with discolorations. Also, do not go for transparent power, as it causes a grey tinge on the skin.

4. Bronzer

If you are very much into makeup, then you know the value of a bronzer. It is a beauty treatment which makes our skin look shiny and fresh and works effectively even under high temperatures. However, you cannot blindly and without direction apply the same to your skin.

Go for a bronzer which is two shades darker than your tan colour., and while applying the bronzer, do not dust it all over. You need to come up with a neat look—so, apply the bronzer with the help of a sculpting brush and in a C formation.  You should begin with temples and then gradually apply it to the forehead, chin, nose and the sides of the face.

5. Eye Make-up

You have got to take eye makeup seriously—because ifit goes wrong, you can end up becoming a subject of gossip.

If you are attending a casual event during the day, go for subtle shades such as pinks, grey and brown; however, for an evening event, opt for shades such as greens, purple, blue, copper, browns, and burgundy.

Fave Five: The Best Avene Skincare Products

best avene skincare products

Readers often ask me why I rarely review French skincare brands like Avene.

Simple: I don’t need it. Avene & co are for sensitive skin that throws a tantrum every time it meets retinol, any kind of exfoliant or… well, pretty much anything else you throw at it.

For Avene, simplicity is the name of the game: lots of moisturizing ingredients that can soothe skin and strengthen the skin’s protective barrier to keep it safe from cold weather, germs and co.

Anything that could irritate skin, including powerful anti-aging superstars like retinol and glycolic acid, are out (but for some reason, Avene usually keeps the fragrance in, mmm).

I know it’s frustrating but if you’re dealing with rosacea, eczema, or uber sensitive skin, staying away from those actives – at least until your skin has fully healed – and focusing on moisture is the way to go.

If that’s you, here are the best Avene skincare products in my humble opinion:

Best Avene Cleanser: Tolerance Extreme Cleansing Lotion ($32.00)/£15.00

Looking for a gentle cleanser that won’t irritate your super sensitive skin? Avene Tolerance Extreme Cleansing Lotion fits the bill perfectly. It uses a gentle mix of emollients that melts away all kinds of impurities: dirt, sweat, makeup… you name it, it takes it off. While it’s at it, it also moisturises and soothes skin, leaving your skin soft and smooth. If you have rosacea, irritations or just sensitive skin, grab yourself a tube ASAP.

Available at: Dermstore and Escentuals

Best For Antiaging: Physiolift Night Smoothing, Regenerating Balm ($50.00/£26.00)

Worried about anti-aging but your skin can’t take retinol? Avene Physiolift Night Smoothing, Regenerating Balm uses the next best thing: retinal (short for retinaldehyde). This form of vitamin A works like retinol, but it’s way gentler. Put another way, it fights free radicals and boosts collagen production without irritating skin. The catch? There’s not too much retinal here. Your skin is sensitive, so it’s best to start with a small dose first. Sure, it’ll take longer to see results but hey, you can’t have everything. The real problem is the fragrance, but if that doesn’t bother your skin, this is still worth a try.

Available at: Dermstore and Escentuals

Best Avene Moisturiser: Rich Skin Recovery Cream ($35.00/£16.50)

Dry, sensitive skin that itches and flakes? Avene Rich Skin Recovery Cream is just what the doctor ordered for you. It uses a mix of Squalane, shea butter and mineral oil to create a barrier on the skin that keeps moisture in and protects it from external enemies like harsh winds and germs. I know what you’re thinking. Isn’t mineral oil the devil incarnate? Nope. Mineral oil undergoes a strict purifying process that removes all its toxins and makes it 100% safe even for the most sensitive of skin types. Try it if you don’t believe me.

Available at: Dermstore and Escentuals

Related: Is Mineral Oil Bad For Skin?

Best Avene Sunscreen: Tinted Mineral Fluid SPF 50+ (£17.50)

Mineral sunscreen is the way to go if you have sensitive skin – no doubt about that. But coming across one that doesn’t turn your skin into a white, greasy mess ain’t no easy feat. That’s where Avene Tinted Mineral Fluid SPF 50+ comes in. It uses nanotechnology, a process that makes particles of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide (the UV filters to blame for the greasy, white cast) so small, they’re invisible to the naked eye. Translation: they become way more lightweight and transparent. Just to be on the safe side, this version has a tint. It prevents the white cast and allows you to skip foundation, too. Win win.

Available at: Escentuals and Feel Unique

Best For Wrinkle Prevention: A-Oxidative Antioxidant Defense Serum ($44.00/£26.00)

Focusing on moisture is all well and good but what about antioxidants? Even sensitive-skin gals need their antioxidants fix. As far as Avene goes, A-Oxidative Antioxidant Defense Serum is your best bet. It has its fair share of vitamins C and E to fight free radicals before they give you wrinkles. Plus, it’s moisturising and gives your skin a beautiful glow. It’s not as loaded with antioxidants as other serums, but if your skin is sensitive, start small. Give this a try and if you’re fine with it, you can always upgrade to something else later on.

Available at: Dermstore and Escentuals

Is Epionce Lytic Tx Retexturizing Lotion The Gentlest Way To Get Rid Of Blackheads?

epionce lytic tx retexturizing lotion review 01

If there’s an ingredient I can’t get enough of, it’s Salicylic Acid.

You see, my t-zone is prone to blackheads. Like, if I leave it to its own devices, the whole area gets covered in dark spots that won’t budge. Eww.

Well, they didn’t budge until I discovered Salicylic Acid. Now that I’m using it every other night, blackheads are a distant nightmare. Phew!

At the moment, I’m getting my Salicylic Acid fix from Epionce Lytic Tx Retexturizing Lotion. In case you’re wondering – yes, it IS worth the splurge. Here’s why:

Key Ingredients In Epionce Lytic Tx Retexturizing Lotion

Salicylic Acid

Salicylic Acid is a must in my skincare routine.

What sets Salicylic Acid apart from all other exfoliants is its ability to get inside the pores and remove all the crap that’s clogging them up.

In other words, it gets rid of any type of acne – blackheads, whiteheads and pimples – and keeps them from coming back.

While it’s at it, Salicylic Acid also exfoliates the surfaces of the skin. Now those pesky dead cells are off your skin, they can’t fall into the pores and clog them up again.

Plus, getting dead cells off your skin makes your texture softer, smoother and brighter.

If you’ve won the skincare lottery and never get a pimple or blackhead, you don’t need Salicylic Acid in your routine. But if blemishes are a constant threat, this will be a game changer for you.

P.S. Epionce Lytic Tx Retextrurizing Lotion has both pure Salicylic Acid and Willow Extract, a natural source of Salicylic Acid.

Related: Why Salicylic Acid Is Key To Spot-Free Skin

epionce lytic tx retexturizing lotion review 02

Meadowfoam Seed Oil

Did you know that Meadowfoam Seed Oil is one of the most stable oils out there?

That’s because it’s made up mainly of long chain fatty acids. These fatty acids are incredibly moisturising: they strengthen the skin’s protective barrier and makes skin softer and smoother for hours.

The other perk: long chain fatty acids last longer. Translation: you don’t need to worry about Epionce Lytic Tx Retexturizing Lotion going rancid anytime soon. It won’t.

P.S. Meadowfoam Seed Oil isn’t the only moisturising ingredient in Epionce Lytic Tx Retexturizing Lotion. This baby has shea butter, too.

Related: Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Shea Butter In Skincare

Let’s Put It To The Test: Personal Use & Opinion

White in colour, Epionce Lytic Tx Rextexturizing Lotion has a lightweight texture that sinks in quickly – without leaving a sticky residue behind.

Epionce says you can use it every night, but I prefer to use it every other night. I don’t want to run the risk of overexfoliating my skin and dry it out. But if your skin can take nightly exfoliation, go for it.

Talking about the perils of overexfoliation, I’m glad Epionce has added meadowfoam oil and shea butter to the mix. As salicylic acid removes dead cells, the emollients can strengthen the skin’s protective barrier so your skin doesn’t dry out.

Having said that, I do apply moisturiser afterwards. I don’t care if it has Lotion in the name, it’s not moisturising enough for my dry skin. If yours is super oily, you may have a different experience.

Since I’ve started using it, the texture of my skin has become smoother. My fine lines and the large pores in my nose areas already look smaller.

Plus, it does a great job at keeping my face a blackhead-free zone. And yes, it works at treating whiteheads and pimples, too.

Now, salicylic acid isn’t an overnight miracle worker. If your blackheads have been there for a while, you can’t apply a thin layer of Epionce Lytic Tx Retexturizing Lotion at night and expect them to be gone by morning. Skincare doesn’t work like that.

Depending on how stubborn your blackheads are, it may take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks to remove them completely.

Once they’re gone, keep using the lotion. It’s not enough to clear up your pores. You want to keep them clean so no other blackhead or pimple would dare rear its ugly head.

The only thing I could do without is the scent. Lavender and orange extracts make the lotion smell good, but they could irritate sensitive skin (my skin isn’t sensitive so I don’t have any problems with it).

Available at: $54.00/£54.50 at Epionce and Dermstore

The Truth About Firming Creams: Can You Really Lift Up Sagging Skin?

the truth about firming creams - do they work?

Once skin is sagging, no cream can firm it and lift it back up: true or false?

Sephora & co want you to keep the hope alive. Navigate through their aisles and you’ll find hundreds of lotions and potions promising to lift even the crepiest of skin.

But if these facelifts-in-a-bottle worked, then why do celebs like Kris Jenner still go under the knife to lift everything up? Mmm…

You know where I’m going with this…

Firming creams aren’t the antidote to sagging skin you’re looking for. No firming cream can give you the same results you get with lasers, fillers and cosmetics surgery.

But when done right, firming creams do have a temporary tightening effect on the skin that makes the sagging look less noticeable.

So how can you tell what’s the real deal and what’s just marketing BS? Here’s the truth about firming creams:

the ordinary retinol 1

Why Does Skin Sag?

I’m sure you’ve heard of collagen and elastin. They’re your skin’s scaffolding, so to speak. Collagen keeps skin firm, while elastin keeps it “bouncing back” into place.

When you’re young, your skin has plenty of both. As you get older, their production slowly trickles to a halt. Add sun damage, pollution, smoking and all the usual suspects to the mix, and your collagen and elastin degrade faster than ever. Cue sagging, wrinkles and paper-like skin.

To add insult to injury, once skin has stopped making elastin, it’s almost impossible to force it to make more again. It just won’t do it.

Prevention is key here. Slather on that sunscreen now so you won’t be tempted to waste your hard-earned cash on firming creams that don’t work once the damage is done.

But what if the damage’s already done? Besides, sunscreen can prevent a lot of damage, but it can’t keep your skin from sagging at all. Even if you avoid sun damage, at some point natural aging is going to catch up with you.

What can you do when that happens?

dr dennis gross c collagen brighten and firm vitamin c serum

Can Putting Collagen And Elastin Back Into Your Skin Firm It?

If your skin doesn’t make enough collagen and elastin on its own anymore, can’t you just put them back in and be done with it? It’s not like there’s any shortage of collagen and elastin creams on the market.

If only it were that easy! You see, collagen and elastin are BIG molecules. Too big to penetrate skin. If they can’t penetrate, how can they trigger the production of collagen? *sighs*

Chopping down collagen into smaller molecules – the “hydrolysed collagen” so popular in skincare today – won’t work either.

Hydrolysed collagen is small enough to penetrate the skin BUT it can’t integrate into the skin’s own collagen framework to affect it. Hydrolyzed collagen is too small for that.

Ironic, isn’t it?

P.S. This doesn’t mean that collagen and elastin in skincare products are useless. They have water-binding properties that keep skin hydrated for hours.

Related: The Truth About Collagen Drinks: Do They Really Work?

How Most Firming Creams Really Work

Hint: they cheat. 😉

Here’s the deal: most firming creams use film-forming agents that form a film on the skin and stretch it in different directions.

All that stretching makes you skin feel tighter and look smoother. It’s not a huge difference – just enough to make you believe it works.

Needless to say, the effects are just temporary. Cleanse your face and your skin goes back to normal.

niod copper amino isolate serum 2 1

What Really Works To Firm Skin, Then?

Don’t lose hope. Not all firming creams use mumbo jumbo and visual tricks to make you believe they’re capable of more than what they can really deliver.

Some firming creams are the real deal. But how do you spot them? Easy: they use collagen-boosting ingredients.

Yep, adding collagen back into the skin won’t work. Using actives that can penetrate skin and tell your cells to pump up the production of collagen gives you much better results.

Just so we’re clear, boosting collagen production CAN’T reverse sagging and make crepey skin bounce back. But it can help support skin so that sagging is less obvious.

Here are the collagen-boosters to look for in firming creams:

In case you’re wondering, antioxidants like vitamin C and green tea have some collagen-building properties, too.

They’re not as common in firming creams as the 3 actives I’ve mentioned above, but you’d do your skin a disservice if you didn’t use them. Remember, your skin can never get enough of antioxidants!

What Are The Best Skin-Firming Creams & Serums?

The Bottom Line

No cream can reverse sagging once it happens. The best firming creams can do – when they contain collagen boosters like retinol, glycolic acid and copper peptides – is to support skin so the sagging doesn’t look so obvious. If you need more help than that, consult your doctor for lasers or facelifts.

All About Sheet Masks.

They’re everywhere now, in Target, in CVS, etcetera, and you’ve probably heard of how all these celebrities do sheet masks every day to get their clear, glowing, radiant skin. So, are sheet masks really all they’re cracked up to be?

First things first: what do sheet masks really do?

Sheet masks do two main things: they flood your skin with hydration and other active, beneficial ingredients, and they create a barrier over your skin so that those active, beneficial ingredients can better sink into your skin. Most often soaked in an essence, the sheet mask itself prevents all the hydration packed into that essence from simply evaporating away into the air. Instead, because of that barrier, the essence ideally has nowhere to go but into your skin.

Where in your skincare routine should a sheet mask go?

Double cleanse and apply toner first, so your skin is clean, fresh, and balanced. Then apply your sheet mask. Discard the sheet mask, then pat the essence into your skin. Seal everything in with a moisturizer. If you did your sheet mask during the day, follow your moisturizer with SPF. If it’s evening, go to sleep.

There’s a lot of extra essence in my sheet mask packet. What should I do with that?

After we’ve cleansed and toned and before we remove the sheet mask from its packaging, we like to pour the extra essence onto our hands and pat it onto our skin — and then apply our sheet mask. Alternately, we’ll put our sheet mask on first, propping the package up against something so all that precious extra essence doesn’t simply drain away. After we’ve removed the sheet mask, we’ll pour the extra essence onto our hands and pat it onto our skin and neck and chest. If there’s more, we like to rub it over our hands and up our arms. There’s no reason to waste, right?

How long should I keep a sheet mask on?

15 to 20 minutes, no more than 30. Don’t wait until the sheet mask is dry to take it off, and do not keep the sheet mask on when it’s dry! When the sheet mask dries out, the dry mask will start to take moisture from your skin, so remove the sheet mask when there’s still essence on it! And definitely do not wear a sheet mask to sleep!

Is it better to do a sheet mask in the morning or evening?

Whenever works best for you! Do a sheet mask after you cleanse and tone and before you put your makeup on in the morning (if you wear makeup!), or do a sheet mask at night before you go to sleep. We recommend doing something lighter and more clarifying in the morning and opting for a mask with a heavier, nourishing essence in the evening, so you can take advantage of the reparative qualities of sleep.

How often can you do a sheet mask?

You could do a sheet mask every day. There are Koreans who do two sheet masks a day. We don’t think you have to do two sheet masks a day, just like we also don’t think you necessarily have to do a sheet mask every day. We would recommend doing sheet masks regularly, though, as often as it works for you.

If I want to do a sheet mask everyday, is there a schedule I should follow?

We recommend alternating between hydrating sheet masks and sheet masks that have more specific, targeted purposes, like anti-aging, pore-shrinking, or brightening, amongst others. Try to give your skin what it needs and what it’s asking for, and look for ingredients that target your unique skin concerns.

Does the material matter?

Sheet masks are made in all kinds of materials, from cotton to microfiber to hydrogel to plant fibers, and product developers will select different materials to work better with different essences. For instance, a heavier essence will probably cause thin cotton material to tear, so developers will often pair heavier formulas with more sturdy materials.

When it comes to us, though, the material of a sheet mask is more sensorial and comes down to personal preference. Even here at Pibuu, some of us prefer cotton masks because they feel more breathable, while others of us swear by hydrogel masks, loving how cooling hydrogel feels and how it clings so closely to our faces.

What sheet masks would you recommend?

The Shangpree Sparkling Mask is a fun, sensorial experience, with an effervescent formula that creates a layer of dense foam made of microbubbles. You can actually feel them popping against your skin in little bursts of hydration, and the mask will leave your skin feeling refreshed and bright. We recommend this particularly for dull skin.

The Tosowoong Pure Aloe Mask is hydrating and calming, perfect for use in the morning to give your skin an extra boost before starting the day, and we also like the Peach & Lily Reset Button for mornings, too. The Reset Button mask is perfect for days your skin isn’t feeling or looking its best; it will help soothe and reduce inflammation and brighten your overall tone; so you can go into your day without worrying about your skin.

The Abib Gummy Sheet Mask Milk Sticker is great for evenings, and it’s unique in that it has been soaked not in an essence but in a thicker, milky cream for extra hydration and softness. Finally, we think you can never go wrong with the Peach & Lily Original Glow sheet mask, which is packed with so many beneficial, nourishing ingredients to get your skin to its, well, original glow.

3D Fiber Lash Mascara – Bringing Out the Beauty in Your Eyes

3D Fiber Lash Mascara – Bringing Out the Beauty in Your Eyes

We are all born with a pair of beautiful eyes and there is no such thing as ugly or unattractive eyes. Even top supermodels would not have those amazing and attractive eyes if it wasn’t for the professional makeup artists constantly looking to enhance their beauty in one way or another. We tend to forget that even the simplest eyes can be turned into a gorgeous pair of attractive cat like eyes by using simple tips and tricks.  The level of attraction the eyes carry is determined by the length and thickness of the eyelashes. Eyelashes can make or break your look easily. For this reason, 3D Fiber Lash Mascara can be your best friend and the answer to all your prayers. Stick to these simple tips and tricks that can help you achieve those movie star eyes and make you stand out in the crowd:

How to Use 3D Fiber Lashes

3D Mascaras are the new trend of the year and almost every beauty blog and website is constantly posting reviews about the new-found product each day. 3D Fiber Lashes is the first product that has proved to be a worthy opponent, substitute even, to false eyelashes. The product guarantees a 300% increase in the length and volume of your eyelashes. Applying 3D fiber lash mascara is simple and easy, although it might take you some time to get used to it. The product comes in a cute container which contains two separate tubes – the transplanting gel and the natural fibers.

Tips to Apply Fiber Mascara

  1. Start with one eye. Apply a thin layer of regular mascara (regardless the brand) and immediately apply the transplanting gel to your eyes focusing on the base of your eyelashes and the outer half of your eye.
  2. Next, apply the 3D fibers with the help of the wand and watch as they lengthen and stick to the transplanting gel you had applied previously. Fibers have the tendency to get clumpy so be careful and use an eyelash comb if necessary in order to get rid of the clumps.
  3. Repeat the steps on the other eye.
  4. After you have applied a thin coat of regular mascara, a single coat of the transplanting gel followed by the fibers on both eyes, wait for your eyes to dry out then follow up with a second coat of the transplanting gel only.
  5. Check your eyes to see if you have missed any spots and if you find any, fill them up with the transplanting gel and fibers. Once you get the hang of it and master the application technique, you will be able to apply perfect coats of the two tubes.

Benefits:

  • More affordable and budget-friendly than false eyelashes and most drugstore mascaras.
  • Adds 300% more volume and length than false eyelashes and mascaras.
  • Can act as an alternative to eyelash extensions as well.
  • Easy to remove with the use of normal makeup cleanser.
  • Are natural looking and do not give the slightest hint of a fake look.

How to Apply 3D Fiber Lash Mascara in 3 Easy Steps

  1. Start by applying a single coat of regular mascara to your eyelashes, which will be your base coat.
  2. Next, concentrating on one eye at a time, apply a single coat of transplanting gel focusing on the upper-half of your eyelashes followed by a coat of all natural fibers, immediately after. Take a second and begin to re-apply transplanting gel to your eyelashes in order to seal the fibers, moving them to the tip of your lashes.
  3. Repeat the same procedure on the other eye.

4 Ways To Prep Your Skin For A Workout To Prevent Acne

This is for all the yoga babes and gym bunnies out there who enjoy regular sweat sessions. Don’t neglect skincare when you work out or you will have to deal with a myriad of problems like pimples, rashes and body acne. All it takes is a few simple steps so that not only does your body feel great, but your skin does, too.

Ditch the makeup

While this one’s pretty much an obvious one, we’re just going to go ahead and say it again, remove all traces of your makeup before working out. Whether it’s a hint of mascara or a full face of foundation and the works, it’s essential to have a makeup-free face when working out. Otherwise the sweat will mingle with the product and clog your pores.

Cleanse, cleanse, cleanse

A clean face is the best you can do for your skin while working out. So once all your makeup is off, use your go-to cleanser to get rid of all the dirt and impurities clogging up your skin. And if your skin is sensitive or if you’re a regular skincare fiend, you can even go in for a mild toner.

Keep it moisturised

Since your body loses water while working out, it’s extremely important for us to hydrate from inside and out. An oil-free, lightweight moisturiser is key to keeping your skin hydrated during a workout. And if you’re exercising outdoors, don’t forget to layer sunscreen over your moisturiser or pick one which has SPF in it.

Hands Off

Now while you’re working out, make sure not to touch your face too much, especially if you’re handling equipment, as it’s a sure shot way of passing on bacteria and impurities. Carry alcohol-free wipes and a clean, soft towel to help get rid of the sweat and any buildup during your workout.
